Pace to get $22M guaranteed in big deal with Jets

Discussion in 'New York Jets' started by The Dark Knight, Mar 3, 2008.

  1. You wouldnt be here commenting if the signing didnt concern you...

Was Mike Vrabel great when he came to the Pats?

    How about Jabar gaffney?

Hell Randall Gay was an undrafted rookie free agent...and Randy Moss was a complete headcase

You have to take chances on potential, when you run the type of defense both the jets and Patriots play. There arent enough colleges that run the scheme to address is completely in the draft.

As for pace, he's played for a horrible franchise...and his best year HAPPENED to be in the scheme WE run. At the very least he adds size, depth and allows BT to move back to Weakside where he had a career year. I'll tgake my chances given the market.

I agree, I said the same thing myself right after that play. He jumped all year for balls like that and caught them and then on that play he decided not to. You have me on that one.

    Keeper.. ABSOLUTELY agree.

Last year I remember a guy cheering the fact that Mangini was working out college wrestlers to audition for the line.

Mangini may be getting desperate. Maybe he has an edict to win or something but fact is, this whole "character" crap, bringing in New england cast offs (Chatham), cheap signings didn't work.

Jets should take BPA at 6. If they evaluate McFadden and feel he could be like an Adrian Peterson, it's a no brainer.

McFadden or Gholston. Thats who I want. I applaud Mangini for having guts to make some moves.

I agree with you, here. I think that a lot of people are trying to get their heads around this deal by peering at past statistics. The NYJ CS doesn't buy people based on what they've done, they buy them based on what they think they will do for the NYJ. In addition, the final price of the deal is dictated by the market and the market for OLBs is very expensive this year. That is just the way it is, if you want to play you have to pay.

Now the Pace contract is for six (6) years. The signing bonus is $20 million that's a 1st yr cap hit of about $3.34 million. So if they gave him a salary (like Tannenbaum did with Jenkins) of $750K then we're looking at a cap hit of about $ 4 million. The cap hit from the Jenkins deal is $5.9 million. We got $4 million back from McCareins, Dyson, and Clarke. We got something back toward the cap from Vilma. We got something back towarda the cap from Eric Coleman. We will get $8.4 million back from DRob.
    Whatever the Faneca hit is.

Looks like we're in pretty good shape on the cap. Let's see what Cimini has to say on the cap. Tomorrow morning Tannenbaum is going to be on WFAN for an interview. It would be a good time to discuss deals.

I think that Tannenbaum is excellent as far as this cap management process is concerned. They want to take full advantage of the FA and they will also take full advantage of the draft.

Cap Hell is a thing of the past, guys. There are a lot of owners that are talking about opting out this spring from the players' contract. And The NFLPA has said that if they opt out there will NEVER be another cap.

Actually, when you think about it, this is probably one of the best of all possible times to take advantage of FA.

The Jets need to sucker the Cowboys into trading their 2 first rounders to us in order for them to trade up and take McFadden.

That way we can take a shot at drafting Talib and a wideout...maybe Sweed or Manningham.

then we'll be good to go..IMO.

This FA period is unprecedented by the Jets. I have never seen them do anything like this since I have been following them. I guess the closest thing was when Parcells first took over, but not to the degree that we are getting things done this year.

Look, even if this doesn't totally work out as expected, we certainly can not fault these guys for trying their tails off.

No doubt our season probably hinges on Clemens and these moves do smell a bit of panic but in the scheme of things who cares? The Pats paniced last year because they felt they needed more O fire power to keep up with Manning. Had they actually won the SB instead of looking like panic it would have looked like brilliance. The Jets don't have SB expectations just 8 & 8 or better. These moves are likely to pay off with that level of expectation which gets the team max PCL going into the new stadium and a chance to reload financially while the cap continues to go up freeing us and everyone else up to continue to overspend.

Agreed on all counts, particularly on taking either McFadden or Gholston.

They might as well spend like this right now because they won't be back in 2009 if they have another year like 2007.

This is an "all in" by the FO.

    Do you work at PFT?

Just because they're trying to win doesn't mean they're desperate.

We lost...I think 7 or 8 games by a touchdown or less last season, with a pretty mediocre team. These signings can only make the Jets better.

Exactly and it's about time. Now if we can just find a 6th round Tom Brady.

LOL, you are clearly not all there, so we'll let you pass. This is football, its a team sport. Not a "game breakers" sport. Try basketball.

On a different note, great signing here. Now if we can add VG in the draft we would have a great pass rush, some thing we need badly if Tom Brady is in our division.

Example of Mangini quitting on converting 4-3 players to be able to be effective in the 3-4. Hes actually going out and getting players that FIT. All I hear is how cheap we are... now were fools for spending too much! Gimme a friggen break!

Look what Faneca is going to do to our O-Line... worth the contract to groom Dbrick and Mangold, and to go into 08 with one of the leagues top O-lines? YES

Jenkins... "Waaahhh waaahhhh wahhhhh we need a bit NT, to be effective in the 3-4... no pass rush... no run stuffers"... worth the contract? YES... to stop the whining alone.

Pace I do believe got too much... but the NFL is a business. We need a pass rushing OLB... we targeted Pace... Phins offered 20 mil... we offer 22. Great... done deal. This guy is the mold of what a 3-4 LB should be, and he will flourish in our new system.

Does this put us in cap hell? I dunno... but remember we don't have to pay Drob or Vilma's salaries anymore... let alone JMac who's contract is bigger then you all think.

Its a new market for FAs, and we're a player. I don't see how you can ask for anything more. $116 million is a given whether we win or not. Winning is what we're supposed to do with the $116 million. Not save it.

No way do I trade the Jets' #6 pick for the Cowboys' #22 and #28. While the extra first round pick seems enticing, both of the Cowboys' picks are in the lower third of the round.

If you go by the NFL draft picks points chart that many teams use (and I believe the Cowboys made famous), the Cowboys would have to throw in their 3rd round pick to make the deal about even. Given the fact that the Jets currently are without a 3rd round pick, that deal may make some sense (especially if the Jets don't feel that anyone in the Top 6 is worth the big money). In order to even make this trade, however, I think the Jets would have to decide that: (a) they don't want McFadden themselves; and (b) no one left at the time they pick excites them. (For instance, if somehow either Long fell to 6, I would snatch them up for the DL or OL.)

What are we doing signing a man to that much money that only has 14 1/2 sacks over 5 years and most of them came in a contract year
