I think you have a very good point here. The fresher the DL and the LBs are the better they play. The more plays they all have the better the unit becomes in the aggregate.
Well, we should be focusing on discouraging the offense in every way possible, on every play. They should be wondering from which direction and position we're coming from next. They should be worried about their arms and legs, and keeping their heads down to protect their necks and chests. The Defense's job is to force the offense to surrender its confidence about everything that it is trying to do. We have to pass rush, and we have to stuff the run, and sack the quarterback, and knock the blockers down where they stand. I'm talking about a completely different attitude where you out-think and also out-hit your competitor on every play. Call it what you will -- pass rushing, stuffing the run -- but it's crushing your opponent so that he is ready and willing to go home right now.
We only overpaid if Mr. Pace doesn't weigh in and be what he can be. The CS apparently is trying to induce some real enthusiasm in the team of almost-wannabes. I would like to see other teams quake a little when the NYJ comes on the field, because they have an idea just what kind of a god-awful whipping they are about to experience. There is no fear of the NYJ today. That has to change.
The CS should never buy a resume. They should sit a prospect down and tell him what they expect and find out what it's going to take for him to over-achieve like that. I am hoping that this FA campaign and all its big bucks deals is part and parcel of this strategy. Nobody on the team or that has been invited to join the team has played up the level that the NYJ needs to become a real untrammeled winner that people are afraid of. This is why we should just pull out all the stops and do what it takes to achieve fear and victory.
Unfortunately for you, you're wrong. He's a very good two-way LB. Pass-rushing isn't his top priority. He is good in run support, and he was the nickle/dime coverage LB and did a good job. His pass-rushing could get even better, but if it remains the same, he's still a very, very good 3-4 LB. Just judging by what I saw of him I thought he was very good, and when someone here who constantly watches the Cardinals and is one of the most intelligent posters here says he was a top 10 OLB last year, I'd say he must've been good.
I guess you should re-read the post, then. I said he was a top 10 OLB last year, and I thought it was ASSUMED the adjectives I used would be understood as describing his play last year, his only year in the 3-4 when he had these responsibilities. He was very good/great for a 3-4 OLB both against the run and in coverage, and 6.5 sacks is perfectly acceptable for a LB whose not the #1 edge rusher.
