Manning seemed to have his number. Like I said, for the most part he did pretty well when healthy.

Fair point about Shep and Strick being injured.

He has specifically said he wants to play here. There's not much more "proof" you could really get. I mean, what kind of proof are you thinking of? Of course, he could be lying through his teeth, but why is it so absurd to think he's telling the truth? Kerry has proven that he's talented, he just needs to change his attitude. I think Rex gives him one year to get his head on straight.

A hybrid NT/DE would be ideal.

I really didn't believe him, it seemed like he was cutting that sentence off without saying everything. I think he's putting it on Rex and Tannenbam to sell him on staying a Jet, something I do not think they can do without Rex guaranteeing him a starting spot for the rest of his career. Rhodes has been diplomatic about the situation but that does not equate to an actual desire to stay. I think he gets traded.

I agree with pretty much everything you just said. The only thing is that I don't really want to see Douglas starting again, though we probably can't get anyone good with the CBA rules and all.

What's wrong with Douglas? In a rotation with DeVito he is a good player IMO. People get on him because he is not a "name" but he's played pretty well this season.

Aside from him saying he wants to be here, what kind of proof are you expecting? You're entitled to your opinion of not believing him, but what would make you believe? It seems as though you have your mind made up no matter what. You know what Kerry wants.

Douglas is definitely a servicable stopgap. I liked the penetration he got a lot of times, be he also was guilty many times of overpursuit.

It wouldn't bother me too much to have him starting through 2010 as long as we spent a pick (or lucked out in FA/trade) with a true pass rusher and a young NT brought in as Jenkins' heir apparent. But eventually I want to see some dominant youth at the ends.

Honestly, I don't give a shit if Kerry wants to be with the Jets or not. He signed a 5 year contract in 2008.

What I do have a problem with is the Jets telling him that they want more effort, and him pretty much saying 'I'll think about it'. That kind of player is cancer. Figuratively, not real cancer and not Hornet cancer.

Guys let's not make this a Rhodes thread or we'll kill it (happened two times already)... some want Rhodes and some don't, we'll see what happens but that's not the point of the thread

Ps Nothing against you WSW or abz... I know you can handle that conversation... but some other users get too hyped up on the subject and than it turns baaaad...

Right here. Kerry says early in the interview that he had the exact same talk with Rex that he had before he was benched. Meet with Thurman, buy into the system, extra work, yadda yadda. Later in the interview, he is saying verbatim:

I'm not sure what that says to you, but it tells me that if Kerry wants to go somewhere else, in his mind, all he has to do is refuse to put in the work to fit in, or buy into the system, or deign to meet with his position coach.

I have a problem with a player like that. A big one.

I'm curious to see what we have in Pitoitua as a DE. The guy started playing football late and is a physical freak at 6'8"... the coaches said he had a lot of potential last TC but this season he hasn't seen the field. I wonder if he can become a contributor after another TC with The Rex Ryan gang...

I would like to see a DeVito-Douglas and an Ellis-rookie rotation next year... I would also be cool with drafting a NT as that would mean we could move Pouha to DE.

I think there are two kinds of DEs... the one that are more stout and get less penetration and viceversa the one that get more penetration but suffer a bit more vs the run.

I'd be cool with DeVito and Pouha being the stout DEs and Douglas and Ellis being the more pass-rushing DEs...

He's certainly gifted with his size. Given another year in TC, I think he is going to be a steady contributor on defense as a rotational guy. Sort of like Mike DeVito only much bigger.

WSW, this^ is what is leading me to believe that he doesn't want to be here.

Nothing's "wrong" with Marques Douglas as a rotational lineman. Besides him not being a big name player, he's also old and he doesn't provide much of a push off the line which is a big reason that we couldn't generate any pressure on Manning past the 1st quarter (none at all without blitzing).

Ropati looked pretty good to me in rotation during the preseason. He still obviously has a way to go as far as development, but I thing we have a lot going for us in DL depth with him, Pouha and Devito behind the starters.

I'm not sure any of them can be full-time impact starters, but you never know what cream will rise to the top.

I think DeVito actually can become a starter... he'll have all the opportunities to win that position in TC (depending on who we draft of course). I was a big fan of his prior to this season and he hasn't let me down :)

I think DeVito can be in there for 75% of the defensive snaps, mostly because he's versatile to shift around on 3 positions on the DLine. He's a good end and he can play NT situationally for a snap or two. I think he and Rex both lucked into each other. Rex's system relies on a lot of shifts and position switches, something DeVito can do for Rex.
