I very rarely (if ever) start a thread in here but I'm so excited about this new season, I thought a thread remembering our original Broadway. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-americas-game/09000d5d8008941a/America-s-Game-1968-Jets This year will be the 50th anniversary of the AFL forming to take on the richer NFL. Very interesting history. I would love to hear from the history buffs about how this started.
I'm only 24 so I can't offer much insight besides this, pick up the complete history of the Jets on DVD. I got it for Christmas a few years ago. You will not be disappointed.
I can't think of anything more depressing than watching a complete history of the Jets. I mean what do they actually talk about after 1969? Ok, best guess synopsis: Namath-knees. Weeb retired. Todd sucks. Walt Michaels! Joe Klecko! Walt Michaels... Joe Klecko... Ken O'Brien! O'Brien fall down go boom. Spanky sad panda. Al Toon! Al Toon fall down go boom. Boomer! Boomer? Pete Carroll? Black hole from midseason 1994 to January 1997. Bill Parcells! Curtis Martin! Vinny Testaverde! Bill Parcells fall down go boom. Bill Belichik! Bill Belichik fall down go boom. Herm Edwards! Chad Pennington! Chad Pennington fall down go boom. Chad Pennington! Chad Pennington fall down go boom. Eric Mangini! Chad Pennington! Chad Pennington fall down go boom. (on the bright side the fish fans have no clue what's about to happen to them...) Brett Favre! Brett Favre fall down go boom. Eric Mangini fall down go boom. Rex Ryan! Mark Sanchez! I'm sure I missed a few things in there but man the Jets fall down go boom a lot after getting us excited.
Just had an awesome email from the Jets about this, wish I could post it all. Its entitled 50 candles , anyone else get this?
NFL Films used Mel Blanc to narrate some of their follies films in the 1970s. Blanc narrated as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Yosemite Sam. I don't know offhand what year "The Magic Bean" was produced. It may have been several years after SB 3. I do know that Blanc's narration was best featured on the 1976 film "The Son of Football Follies."
Great film. I had just turned 24 and was on Christmas leave from the service and on my way to Vietnam several days later at the time of that filming. I watched the game with my dad in his back "TV family room," then departed for Vietnam on January 20, 1969. But the memory of the SB win stuck with me throughout my entire tour of duty in 1969 and all the Woodstock bullshit that summer, and I promised myself that I'd try to set it all aside and be a Jets fan for life if I made it out of there in one piece. And I did, and here I am today, still a loyal Jets fan and still not taking any crap from a guy like Woody. Say no to PSLs, fellas.
Great story. My dad served starting in '69 as well. It's amazing sometimes to hear stories of just how powerful that game was for those lucky enough to have witnessed it when it was first played. I just hope I get a chance to see Gang Green hoist the Lombardi one day. Despite being thousands of miles away, from everything I've heard, I also have to think that your patience is going to pay off on those PSLs.
Man that's an awesome story.... my dad was like you... he was home for the Jets but I think he missed the Mets because of Vietnam. If you can survive Vietnam you can definately survive all the frustration this franchise will dish out over the years
I am down with that as well. But I would have to bring along my Wesley Walker highlight reel too! I think it is on reel to reel. 40 plus years.............. still suffering but still having hope. section 227 row 5, much respect for you my friend, much respect.
Back then Sterling Holloway was the guy who did a lot of Disney cartoon movies. Winnie the Pooh, Kaa from the Jungle Book. They wanted someone with a light hearted voice to make it sound good.
