Wow... look at this old thread. Makes me sad to read my responses right at the beginning. I had a bad feeling Zach wasn't the 2nd coming and to quote myself at the time we "blew the living piss" out of the chance to build the team better right there. You were right on it Ouchy.
I lobbied this offseason to forget signing a vet, keep our money and picks, trade for Mills or Ridder, and keep building. That take didn't go over very well either. Everyone seems to think we're just a QB away when we beat a bunch of struggling backup QB teams last year. Rushing into expensive QBs (money or draft picks) before your ready just keeps bad teams spinning in circles. Great QBs don't win superbowls, they just complete the process. Great rosters win superbowls.
I don’t think Ridder is very good at all. I like Davis Mills though. He had the best rookie year of that entire class.
I bought into the Zach hype. I bought into the Lam Jones hype and every hyped 1st round draft pick since Namath. But at the time I actually thought our roster was really thin and I liked the idea of getting a hual of positional players. You made a pretty good case at the time. I just didn't trust Douglas and Saleh to evaluate the QB class at that time.
I shaded towards Fields as the pick if we had to go QB at #2. My insane plan at the time (judging from my posts) was to pick Sewell and trade Becton for another 1st Rounder so we'd end up with essentially 3 First round picks. (Sewell, AVT & Farley/Newsome) then use second rounder and the two third rounders (which we ended up using on AVT) to go some variety of WR, RB & QB.
