This is a very reasonable approach from Jets standpoint. Fitz needs to be careful though - if Geno shows he closed the gap, and Petty/Hack show potential to be a backup, FO might decide to withdraw the offer. Or Fitz might bet that Geno shows that the gap widened and Jets are forced to up the offer. Like Stokes said, interesting dynamic.

Fitz has a lot riding on what's going on in OTAs. He has to be curious. So, where does Fitz get his personal updates? Decker? Marshall? Does he go to OTAs and watch for himself wearing a burka? But seriously, solid OTA info seems to be very little. Where would Fitz go if he wants the inside scoop (beyond the dribble that gets published) on how Geno and company are doing? Do you think his agent has hired a PI to spy on the practice fields? So much is riding on it. Has to be killing him if all he gets is the junk we get.
The Jets have now had 7 OTA practices and the media has only been allowed at 2 of them. And they are only able to see field 1 (starters and key backups) and not field 2 where the rookies and such spend their time. I really like this setup from TB and how it allows Hack to get a ton of reps all while keeping the pariah (aka beat writers) away. I'm a big fan of TB and hope he can stick around for awhile.
It's interesting that the Jets don't actually have to pull the offer until Fitz says he wants to sign it. Let's say they've already decided that they want Geno as their starter for the year, they still shouldn't do anything now because maybe Geno gets hurt and will miss significant time. We won't know whether the offer is actually still outstanding until Fitz says he wants to sign it. People are assuming it is still available (although the Jets haven't said anything publicly one way or the other). The real question is what happens if and when Fitz says he's ready to sign it. Can't imagine the Jets are too happy with this situation with Fitz - if they think Geno can do the job or they think Hack might be ready by mid-season (and they can get another veteran backup QB), the Jets may very well pull the offer before Fitz signs.
