I definitely get the Turner pick up over someone like Fant on the cheap. Both coming off major injuries, both stunk when they played last year, but Billy has overall better track record and familiarity. But we are talking about near bottom of the barrel pick up here. Basically a Turner for Fant replacement on the line which had the worst tackle play in the League last year. On top of that Brown is a year older and Becton is coming off two years injured as opposed to one compared to last year. And the only move is bottom of the barrel pick up of Turner vs Fant? Now, as far as opportunities, I don't have to go far. Texans just got Josh Jones, who had a really good last year, unlike Turner. In the draft JD didn't rate Broderick high enough to draft in the 1st, but it does not end there. Dawand Jones was a consensus 2nd round guy who really slipped all the way to the 4th round. Given where we were at tackle spot, why not trade up a few spots to get this guy, it does not cost much in the 4th (heck, Patriots even traded with us for very little in return). Instead we trade down and then get Carter Warren, who was projected to go 4th/5th round. Now, consensus and conventional wisdom suggest that Dawand, who arguably played better than Paris Johnson on the same team at the highest College level, but has lesser upside, is a drastically better selection. JD went against that and right now looks like he could not have been more wrong. Warren is injured again, and Dawand played better in preseason than any tackle we have aside from Becton. The point is, we have to give credit where credit is due, and JD deserves a lot of it in other areas, but he also deserves to be questioned when it comes to Tackle. He does not have a good track record of building OLine, where he failed for Sam and for Zach last year. Now, we are depending on old man Brown coming off season ending injury coupled with poor play last year and two year injured Becton to hold up for hopefully 20+ games and play well. It's not impossible to survive, and I am praying for that, I just felt JD could have done a better job in that area than Turner who sucked last year and had a season ending injury, and a trade down in the 4th Warren, who also had a season ending injury.
that’s what I was getting at. We were hoping to get Aaron Rodgers, we couldn’t get Carr anymore, so we would most likely be stuck with Zach. He chose Burrow for sure over maybe Rodgers/potentially Zach Wilson. My bigger point is that Duane Brown’s contract meant absolutely nothing when it came to Orlando Brown’s contract because according to Orlando Brown, we offered more money than the team he chose.
If I was to roast JD for anything it would be backup QB. Going into the season with a 40 year old all-world QB and our two backups are Wilson and Boyle. Based on the performance of these 2 in preseason, we are an injury away from a wasted season......and given Rodgers age, there aren't too many seasons to waste.
Given that Wilson was able to game manage wins last year leads me to believe he can game manage a win or two if Rodgers misses a few games. If Rodgers misses a lot of time I think we would be in trouble no matter who the back up was. It's a gamble, I'll give you that. Hopefully we never have to find out if JD was right or wrong about QB2.
Tend to agree except the underlined. Will concede that any backup needed for an extended length of time will be tested, however, given the strength of our roster, I think a seasoned vet could put this team into the playoffs, even if Rodgers should go down for more than a few games.
Zach did pretty good in preseason, and numbers show that. 96 passer rating, got some yards on the ground: https://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/new-york-jets/stats . PFF also agrees with good 75 rating. I think he solidified himself as a back-up based on eye test, conventional, and advanced analytics, there is really no disagreement anywhere, it's a consensus view. Boyle sucked, but he is #3. I feel comfortable with Rodgers and Zach at this point as #1 and #2. If there is a longer term injury, we might need to make a move, but we are not there yet.
Agreed. And I think it it is more likely than not that Rodgers misses some time. it would be nice to have someone reliable if/when that happens
Based on what, exactly? Rodgers has an excellent history of staying healthy. Is this just wishful thinking? Honest to God. Brady played 6 years past his 39th birthday and didn't miss a start. Rodgers has missed time since 2017 and before that yky have to go back 10 years. I know you read my posts so just tell me why you think it's more likely than not he misses time?
We all have our opinions, but I disagree about Zach. What I saw in preseason so far, (we have one more game to go to change my opinion), is someone who exhibited some of the same flaws from last year, missing gimme throws to backs, indecision in the pocket, and inaccuracy over the middle. Ball security was improved, a few nice deep throws and he was able to move the ball downfield (sometimes with his legs) but he was unable to finish except that one TD throw against Carolina, which I will admit was pretty. However, I don't see how a team can hope to win in this league by settling for field goals which is what Zach's tenure so far at QB provided. If we had anybody but Rodgers as QB1, I could live with Zach as QB2. However, this roster is now built to win and QB2 needs to be able, at the very least, to put the Jets in a position to win games against every opponent including the elite teams. I'm not saying he can't ever be a #2 or even a #1. As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on him. However, for the role we need him to take this year, I don't think he has shown enough to pull it off.
He was the QB that played when we beat the Bills last year and that was without Hall and AVT. He capable of game managing a few wins.
There is still one more preseason game left. Let's see if he can move the ball in the red zone tonight.
Of for sure. But as far as the preseason goes and scoring, it's been run, run, pass. Run, run, pass. Even the best QB would have a hard time stuffing the ball into the end zone with the preseason vanilla game calling we've had. They've also taken some major penalties when down in the red zone putting Wilson in a bad position. I don't want to make excuses for Wilson. I'm just saying that I can't lay all the blame on him for not scoring TD's. Just wait if we don't score TD's with Rodgers tonight. It will be very dark on these forums, lol He's old! He's washed! He sucks! We should have signed Carr! Just wait.
Because SOJF. Giants may have the stupidest fans (Jets were 3rd) but we definitely have the most miserable.
And I think I know who is at the top of the list. I want to give him a pass because he lives in the armpit of NY but there's something else going on there.
Josh Jones may have had a good year last year, but he must not have been considered to be very good since the Texans gave up little to get him. If JD had traded for him and he reverted to poor play, JD would have been criticized for that. Many Jets fans have criticized JD for drafting Becton because he was so big and they feel that leads to injury issues. Well, Dawand Jones was even heavier than Becton when he was drafted. JD would have been heavily criticized for drafting yet another too big OT. The Jets think that Warren had 1st round talent. The biggest problem JD has had when it relates to the OL has been injuries. He was criticized for signing Fant, and Fant played very well for the Jets until he got injured. Becton was showing why he was drafted so high until he got injured. The Jets have had incredibly bad luck when it comes to OL injuries the last 2 seasons. He's had to resort to grabbing guys off their couches or off the street. One cannot predict injuries with players who have had no injury histories. Could he have done a better job? Undoubtedly, but had even half the players he added stayed healthy, few people would be complaining about the OL. Many of those who are negative, critical of JD and panicking don't like him in general, and have been very critical of him. With the rest of the talent he has added to this team, no one should be complaining. We wouldn't even be in the spot where we could be a SB contender, if it weren't for the job that JD has done.
But it's not because of "SOJF" at all, it's because of the same old NFL - no misery required, just reality. Last year over 2/3 of NFL teams used replacements at quarterback because their season starters were knocked out. Every team should expect it.
Let's be fair... anyone that's been athletic into their late 30s/ 40s KNOW that odds of getting injured increase. (sadly when I turned 41 I realized why most athletes retire at 40) Rodgers has been very durable, but using Brady (the extreme anomaly to the rule) as a comp probably isnt realistic, especially considering Rodgers is more willing to take shots than Marcia.... Not saying he's going to get hurt, but it wouldn't be a shock if he got dinged up for a few games.
