Leonhards definitely a FS Put it this way whats the difference between a FS and SS ? SS is your in the box run support hard hitter guy, FS is the one who stays in the back and focuses on being a ballhawk and coverage. Now anyone who has watched Smith play football ever, is there anyone who thinks Smith is our coverage guy ? Hes basically a small LB. Which is why if we brought in Landry he would be here to REPLACE Smith, not play with him.
This. Sign him cheap. I don't think the Jets should stop there-- sign a player like Atogwe. The pass rush is a glaring need but the Jets were close to dead last in TE coverage last year
Isn't the party line that the 'safeties are interchangeable in Rex's system'? If you're looking for them to designate guys as FS and SS then you'll be waiting a while, I suspect.
I'll say it here... we better consider Kirkpatrick as a FS at pick #16. S is becoming an increasingly important position in today's NFL and one where many plays (INTs, sacks) can be made. Kirkpatrick and a backfield of Revis, Cromartie, Wilson & Kirkpatrick would allow us to not fear teams with strong TEs.
I'm sorry isn't this a fan board where crazy ideas are always thrown around and in terms of pie in the sky ideas I've seen on here over the years it wasn't that nuts. If you bothered to scroll down after that post I said I had misread where he was upset about getting tagged and thought he wasn't going to sign tender.
Apparently Jarrett Bush met with the Jets on Saturday. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I wonder if Landry actually met with the Jets today. Haven't heard anything about that.
Is Leonhard healthy? Can he still run after injuring the same leg in two consecutive seasons? There is a reason he is not a Jet today and that is he is hurt.
The odds are looking better and better for Leonhards return. I dont expect big things from him, but Rex loves em, and hes got spunk. Eitherway if hes here it will be nothing more than a 1 year flier for vet min
Why would we want to sign Leonhard back, he has missed parts/most of the last two seasons. He can not cover a TE worth a shit, struggles tackling aTE like Gronk. There would be no improvment at all from last years team.
Leonhard isn't that bad in coverage and his injuries have been kind of freak accidents. I agree it wouldn't be an upgrade, but as of right now we're downgraded at the safety position. Leonhard > Landry for FS ... now if you're talking about SS Landry would be an upgrade for the 7 plays he was healthy.
Landry for SS, Jim for free safety. Jim is a smart guy and that can make up for his non-athletic frame. But at the moment we're looking terrible. if we do sign Landry, i expect Jim back cheap and a safety in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Jim Leonhard is a great team player and a great guy, but on the field he was nothing more than an overachiever. He was never great at covering TE’s or being a center fielder. What he was great at was being the QB on the field and pre-snap reads, and for that he will greatly missed. But now he’s had his 2nd season ending injury to the same knee, and isnt getting any younger or more athletic. Thinking our TE coverage will better with him and Smith back or him and Landry is hopeful. He was one of my favorite Jets, but I think its time to move on. We should look towards the draft and pray that Tanny and company are able to pull out 3-4 starters.
Dude - I hate to break it to you, but hoping for 3 or 4 starters from this draft is down right delusional, especially the way this regime drafts...
Exactly. Kyle Wilson Vlad Ducasse. How many starters? Last year only Mo W is a starter. And to top it off, we traded Lowery at our biggest position of need. Someone needs to be fired.
If we do go some sort of route like this I think we 100% need to draft a safety in the second round. Maybe Smith or Martin, somebody that might be versatile enough to take over for whichever of Leonhard and Landry goes down (as one of them almost surely will at some point). That said I think that would look like a fairly stingy safety unit if we could pull it off. Is it nearly as delusional to hope for 2-3?
Maybe four starters might have been a stretch, but I dont think hoping for 3 is at all, considering the fact that we havent filled a single hole yet. An OLB round 1, safety round 2 and WR round 3 is delusional? And I didnt say that they had to be great or whatever but just able to hold a position down. As of now, we need a WR #2, IMO a RB, arguably a RT, a FS, a SS, an OLB, a #2 TE and possibly an ILB. Some of those holes have to be filled through the draft and make an immediate impact.
Last year we drafted Mo Wilk who was a day 1 starter and Jeremy Kerley who became the slot receiver mid season. We also traded for Cromartie with our 2nd round pick so there is a significant starter. 3 Starters from that draft to make an immediate impact.
