The only free agents the Jets have historically been able to attract no matter how good they are is aging veterans who are looking for the highest contracts possible..I hope the young players develop but I doubt winning 5 games instead of 2 is gonna make us any more attractive as a free agent destination.

I disagree with you...a young free agent is more likely to sign on a young team that is in rebuilding mode & has won 5 games than a older team that is just average.( 6-8 wins).

Thanks for your response. We'll have to agree to disagree however.

    1. I think Cousins is better in some ways, Smith in others.

    2. Petty had better not be unproven by next year. If he is, then Bowles should be fired, and Woody and Chris Johnson should be shot. Even so, the team will still be rebuilding. There is no reason to bring in an expensive veteran QB. Petty should have plenty of experience by then and Hack should have some or at least be ready to seriously compete for the starting job. If the Jets have the #1 or #2 pick there will be absolutely no reason to bring in Smith. They'll have the QB they draft, Petty and Hack.

    3. What makes you think he won't command a ton of money? You do remember what Fitz got last year, don't you? Smith is a lot better than Fitz, and if he is considered the top QB, he will most likely get at least $14-$15 million per season, if not closer to $20 million.

    4. I think you're dreaming that he will want to come here. Just because he has a good chance of being a starter here won't mean that much when there are at least 4-5 other teams where his chances of starting will be the same, if not better. Some players don't want to play in the glare of NYC lights. The cost of living is also a lot higher in the NYC area than in other areas of the country not named San Francisco. Just because we're gonna have a lot of cap space doesn't mean that we should use a huge chunk of it (perhaps as much as 1/4th of it) to sign an older vet QB. Bringing an older, expensive QB in is trying to take a short cut on the rebuild and would show great impatience. If the Jets get Darnold or Rosen, there's a good chance that one of them might start day 1 or would at least be ready to start by the end of the season, if not earlier in the season. Bringing in Smith would also delay Petty's and Hack's development or the young QB they draft. Adding Smith would mean that the Jets would have 4 QBs or that they'd wind up trading or releasing either Petty or Hack, and I would be totally against that. You don't give up on a young QB prospect to bring in an older QB to compete for a season or two. The Jets need to settle on a young QB and allow him to grow with his receivers and offensive mates. Bringing Smith in would only get in the way of that.

IMO the only scenario where it would make any sense at all for the Jets to bring in Smith would be if all the top collegiate QB prospects wind up injured, announcing that they are staying in school, or have played horribly over the remainder of the season, so the Jets don't plan to draft one of them high, and they have no confidence in either Petty or Hack

Seattle got lucky. They tried the shortcut remember. Gave away a bunch of picks for Flynn the back up in Greeen Bay. To their credit they realized immediately that their 3rd round pick Wilson was the better choice. They dumped Flynn and his 60 million dolar contract and kept winning.

Because he would cost a forture. That if he even hits the streets. Washington will probably franchise him at 30 million a year unless they come to some long term agreement. The Jets are nowhere near the team Cousins needs to be successful. Plus Bowels is still lurking around like a vulture.

Yes, the did get very luck...and they had other players like Sherman still playing on their rookie deals. The perfect storm. then we see teams like the Raven in the SB and overnight they gotta pay Flacoo $30M/yr......and they had to say good by to half their team, and they haven't won a single game since ;)

To be fair, the Ravens have won a playoff game since dishing out that deal. Two 8-8 seasons, one 10-6 wild card berth and one 5-11 season. They could be on their way to a good season this year.

All it takes is a team to draft well to be able to survive a large quarterback contract.

I understand that. I'd still personally take the risk in finally getting a franchise quarterback. We could give Kirk $22 million a year and still have another $40 million to work with to sign a left tackle, receiver and maybe even a defender.

They did get lucky, but they signed Matt Flynn and then ended up trading him for a 4th round pick & a conditional pick the following season. They didn't give up anything to get him, and only signed him to a 3 year/$26 million deal ($10 million guaranteed). A bad contract, but you can live with an $8.667 million mistake.

Their mistakes are signing Russell Wilson to that deal and giving him absolutely no help whatsoever so that they could keep Earl Thomas/Sherman/Chancellor/Wagner/Bennett together. They should've given a little to try to build an offense around Wilson. Their offense is in shambles because they can't protect Russy.

    Average salaries ($64.042 million)
CB Richard Sherman - $14 million
ILB Bobby Wagner - $10.75 million
FS Earl Thomas - $10 million
SS Kam Chancellor - $12 million
    DEMichael Bennett - $10.167 million
DE Cliff Avril - $7.125 million

That's actually still better than the Dolphins shitty cap management. But that's $17 million less than half their cap space.

Also add in that Doug Baldwin and Jimmy Graham average out to an additional combined $21.5 million. Jimmy Graham, who can't stay on the field in running situations cause he can't block. That was really a poor trade for the Seahawks considering they also gave up their Pro Bowl center Max Unger (1x All-Pro) who is still playing at a relatively high level.

That sounds more doable. But Bowles must be gone. We need someone offensive minded to get this team going. I'll be watching the OC Morton to see if he can have this offense moving in a better direction. They looked improved against the Dolphins. Let's see what he does the next couple of games.

I can deal with Bowles if Morton stays. I think he's looked excellent as a playcaller. Lots of varied formation looks and good route tree combinations.

He looks like he's maximizing the strength of the offense which is a lot of shifty receivers in the intermediate route range. Not trying to over extend the players we have by forcing them into situations where they need to compete for the balls. He's letting the plays create separation rather than needing the players to beat their man.

I saw a lot of that with Gailey. Putting his receivers in positions where they need to beat and out body their receivers. Luckily he had the horses in Decker and Marshall to do so. We no longer have that luxury.

Gailey was also the king of the empty backfield 5 wide receiver 3rd and 1. I don't see that. I see a lot of heady good situational football plays being called.

It's only been three games. But he's protected the quarterback and the ball. Let's see if he can get the ground game going.

And let's see if it continues. I'd like to fight like hell to keep this guy if it continues throughout this entire season. Hell, maybe we go the route of the Buccaneers. Promote Morton so we don't lose him like they did with Koetter, whether he was ready or not.

I'm getting way ahead of myself though.

Also tanking doesn't mean the players on the field aren't playing hard it means the team assembled is not capable of winning many games...of course the players are gonna play hard.

Idunno. Call me crazy. But we haven't had a franchise quarterback in this franchise outside of a couple one year wonders with Vinny Testaverde and Pennington for maybe a couple years.

There's a legitimate franchise quarterback that's about to hit the open market. And that almost never happens. And he'll only be 30 at the start of the 2018 season. He already has a division title. He will be in contention for his second in three years this year. We haven't won one of those since 2004 and have four in our god damn franchise history since 1960.

Get the quarterback. Figure out all the other shit like cap dollars two years from now and shit later.

All of a sudden no one wants to go after that player?

The obvious focus of the thread post-OP has been on Cousins, but let's stay the hell away from Le'Veon Bell. We can get his 90% of his production (more than that based on his first 3 games this season numbers) at 10% of the price from a 3rd or 4th round draft pick. We want to talk sexy FA pickups, let's look at a loaded WR market, shall we?

Agreed. Only ten runningbacks make more than $6 million per year. I think $6 million is the absolute MOST I'd pay a runningback. And even then I want nothing to do with a free agent runningback. Drafting the position is the way to go. Run them into the ground and send them on their way for their second contract. The most peak production you'll really get out of a free agent runningback is 3 years if you're lucky.

Ages are how old they will be at the start of/during the 2018 season. I'm missing a couple I'm sure but these are the main ones I'd potentially look at.

We need a more imposing target to be the #1 as we have Kearse/Enunwa/Stewart as the most shifty over the middle type of guys. I still love Jarvis Landry as a player though. He's a similar player to the type of guys we already have though.

I loved Marqise Lee out of college. He competes for balls down the field. Hasn't lived up to what he did in college, but he's starting to come on this year. He could potentially be had on the cheaper sidebar too in that $5-$7 million range. I don't see any AJ Green/Julio Jones type of talent that I'd throw a ton of money at.

I'll retract that statement as Alshon Jeffery is that type of talent but he can't stay healthy and is approaching 30.

I'll take a look again and potentially edit to add a couple more names if I see any that are appealing.

    WR Larry Fitzgerald - 35
    WR Alshon Jeffery - 28
    WR Terrelle Pryor - 29
    WR Sammy Watkins - 25
    WR Eric Decker - 31
    WR Taylor Gabriel - 27
    WR Jordan Matthews - 26
    WR Marqise Lee - 25
    WR Allen Robinson - 25
    WR Davante Adams - 25
    WR Jarvis Landry - 25
    WR John Brown - 28
    WR Martavis Bryant - 26
    WR Paul Richardson - 26
    WR Kendall Wright - 28
    WR Dontrelle Inman - 29
    WR Mike Wallace - 32
    WR Jaron Brown - 28

    Whatcha think @wampa ?
