Why people keep on wishing for shit that ain't gonna happen is a mystery to me. Kinda like playing a slot hoping for a big hit while losing on every pull. That slot machine will bleed you of every last cent and still will never, ever, hit big.... Woody is NOT GONNA HIRE AN ESTABLISHED PRIOR HEAD COACH! That shit just ain't gonna happen. It's not what Woody Johnson does. You stand a better chance of hitting 5 numbers in the Powerball than Woody hiring a prior successful Head Coach on the offensive side of the ball. Why folks continue to complain and bitch about it is a futile waste of energy. Woody ain't selling his cash cow either. It's almost as if self-flagellation is something they revel in. I feel sorry for them sometimes..
Not for nothing, the last time Woody hired an established offensive coach it was maybe the worst time period of my Jets fandom and we ruined our best shot at a longterm franchise QB.
You'd think there's a lesson to be learned from that... Until there's a VP of Football Ops in place (that ain't ever happening either...), Woody will continue making choices his way fan opinion be damned.
Those two teams had something in common that we don't have in common with them. It's a pretty big one too.
For most franchises yes but not us. I also have absolutely 0 issue with hiring a defensive guy to be the executive type coach while someone like Engstrand carries the entire offensive load. And that's kinda what kills me with everyone demanding we burn it down... the offense, given how many hurdles there are (mainly a terrible QB) has been ok! There's plenty of film that shows receivers running free and lots of good running game film. The biggest problem is QB and no coach is going to overcome a bottom 3 QB. Exactly what we're begging for might already be here with a competent QB and hopefully we find that out next year.
Exactly... And now that we have a rookie GM that so far appears to know what he's doing, our odds have gotten a lot better on draft day. He stockpiled picks for flexibility just in case our QBoTF comes in '27 and not '26. The Jets could pivot and go for the top rated WR and still have more ammo if needed for a trade. He structured Fields' contract so that '26 is the end of the road unless Fields suddenly blossoms into an All-Pro QB. Someone, probably TT, will be here more or less as a QBC for the new FQB. . Also, by '26-27 the guys still on the roster will actually want to be here. Huge improvement for Glenn to continue his training as CEO/HC. The Jets will be okay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Glenn needs to improve, there's 0 argument against that. His in-game decision making needs to get better, the way he handles himself in the media needs to get better and the guys he chose for his staff need to work out (Wilks hasn't). But there's absolutely a logical formula here that leads to success with the current CS (minus Wilks) and FO in place.
No doubt…half a season is way too short and I’m not saying fire him now. To be honest, I hated the hire from the go, so I’m a bit biased to be fair, but I’ve seen literally nothing to give me pause and say hey, maybe my gut is wrong this time. So far, there has been nothing, at least to me, to show that he is the right guy. He’s a rookie clearly learning on the job, but he’s a defensive guy who’s never fielded a top D and our D looks way worse with him now than it did under Saleh. That’s not good. Not saying he can’t improve, but I want to see SOME signs that he’s getting it here in the 2nd half of the season. Show me SOMETHING. So far, he hasn’t, and his pressers are bizarre…he scoffs at legitimate questions like they are crazy when they are not, etc.
Yeah this is pretty much exactly where I'm at too. I've seen almost nothing from Glenn that I usually see from good coaches. The best thing I can say about him so far is it doesn't seem like he's a pushover like Saleh was. Our penalty issues have gotten better over the past few weeks which is encouraging.
Right…he made a statement in his presser about how we are now like 15th or 14th in penalties which is better than where we were last year as bottom 5 or something like that. As to the pushover stuff, I always chuckle how the pendulum swings and you can see it in our coaching hires as well…but the problem with a disciplinarian is that if the team continues to lose, the players will tune him out very quickly…no one is going to take him seriously and his hard style if the team just keeps losing.
Yeah this is such a Woody special. He's incapable of nuance so he just keeps hiring the opposite personality type of the last coach and hoping it works out lol.
A few things on our defense this season... The head coach is not a reflection on the side of the ball they emanated from 100% of the time. Ulbrich called plays, defense looked awesome. Ulbrich stopped calling plays, defense was terrible. Is that on Ulbrich? So then why is it completely on Glenn that the defense stinks? He's not calling plays, he's got a coordinator dedicated to gameplan and playcalling. Can't argue we're worse, but I also can't pretend its all on the head coach. The last three weeks we've given up 315 yards per game which puts us right around the league average, in fact a little lower. The first 5 weeks we were giving up 348 yards per game which is above average. The last three weeks we've given up 21.3 points per game, which would rank 11th. The first 5 weeks we were giving up 31.4 points per game which would rank 31st only in front of the Bengals. Im sure the opponent factors into that but the Broncos and Bengals (with Flacco) are no slouch offensively. Panthers game certainly helps those numbers. But what also factors into that is personnel changes. We traded for Brownlee and replaced MC2. We benched Tony Adams for Malachi Moore. We got back JJ which led to less Clemens. AZ Thomas stepped in for Sauce during the Carolina game and outside of one BAD burn in the Bengals game, he played well. And the CS clearly figured something out with Stephens. So sure, the three game sample size is smaller than the five game sample size but the three games is far more indicative of the personnel we currently have. That's the biggest reason why I'm giving it equal weight. Through 9 weeks we're: 20th in yards allowed (would be 13th if 315 ypg was our 8 game average) 11th in passing yards allowed 26th in rush yards allowed 27th in scoring (would be 11th if 21 ppg was our 8 game average) 9th in third down defense 13th in red zone defense While it's not good it's far from a catastrophe and there's reason to believe it will get better. Although we just lost our two best defensive players so it's going to be a pretty tough uphill battle to get better. But no coach thrives after losing a top 3 CB and top 10 DT.
I don’t know…we can split hairs on this and look at first few games vs. last few games, take into account opponents, etc., in the end I just step back and look at the D and it stinks. 20th in yards allowed is not good, and 27th in scoring is atrocious. I’m not putting too much clout into the passing yards because we’ve been down so much in several games that teams stop throwing, so it is what it is. The eye test matches the poor standings. As to the calling plays stuff, I don’t care if it’s AG or Wilks or the water boy calling the plays…he’s the HC it’s on him. He picked Wilks. He lets Wilks call the plays. It’s on the HC. As is the offense, including the piss poor QB play which is coming from his hand picked guy. Sorry but that’s how I look at it. Again, I’m not saying fire the guy today but if this team continues to shit the bed like we’ve done in the first half, I for sure would want to see a new HC in here instead of wasting all these picks on a guy from the wrong side of the ball still trying to figure it out. I know it won’t happen because Woody is too much of an idiot to see anything, and I’m guessing he may still be paying Saleh out so firing the next guy and paying TWO coaches to not coach our team would be way too much egg on his face and he won’t do it. The soonest I can imagine a change would be whenever he is done paying Saleh. Again, I’m just guessing here so I may be way off on the payment stuff… In any case, like I said, I hated the hire from the jump (and I LOVED Glenn as a player here) so I know I’m biased, but I’m not 25 years old any more and I’m just so fucking tired of watching these three year cycles of shit when I can spot the shit in year 1. I’m over it…I know I have Zero say in it other than to complain about it which gets old, but I just am so tired of Woody and his fucking incompetence.
Looking at the 8 games as a whole doesn't really make sense though considering the pretty hefty personnel changes. We lost two starters in JJ and Quincy and replaced them with guys that probably shouldn't even be in the league for four weeks. We replaced a terrible safety with a good one. We replaced a bad slot CB with a good one. It's not apples and oranges but it's definitely Granny Smith and Macoun. Also the bolded about playcalling... that's your opinion but it doesn't work that way. It just doesn't. You can complain about Wilks calling plays but in no world is it logical to think Glenn is going to takeover playcalling 8 games into his first year. Piss poor QB play doesn't even really matter because Fields wasn't brought here to be the guy. Terrible choice, but there weren't many good ones available (and lets not pretend keeping Rodgers would have been a good idea)
Yeah I get the variables, and now at year end I can already hear the excuses about well our D went to shit because we lost our two best guys…great, love the built in excuse to suck. We’ll see…maybe the young hungry guys who do hustle can grow into the scheme and even Wilks may look a lot better at year end than he does now. Anything is possible. And again, I’m not saying fire AG now…but what I AM saying is that I want to see signs that he may grow into the role and that he is getting it…who knows, sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, especially in football, and so maybe the young guys will buy in more to AG than some of the older guys who are sick of losing, but I want to see improvement. I want to see it in AG’s game management, I want to see it in effort, I want to see it in supporting stats, etc. Show me SOMETHING
You: I want to see improvement! Me: Here's evidence of improvement. You: No Dude I'm just as fed up as you. Been doing this shit for probably just as long. I'm at my wit's end, trust me. But I'm not gonna ignore the facts, whether good or bad.
You made me chuckle!! No I refuse to acknowledge the slight improvement! Pretty funny…anyway yeah I am fucking frustrated…I’ve been watching since 1979 so I was too young to see Namath play for us, but I lived through all of it since the Richard Todd days, the sack exchange, the Parcells years, and the Rex years…the best I’ve seen in over 40 years is 3 AFCCG’s. That’s it. That’s all I have to show for it. Life of a Jets fan…
I feel it all man. You got me beat by a few years but you at least felt some pride at the beginning. I got forced into Jets fandom right at the start of the Coslet years so I was introduced to misery very early on. Woody is Chris. Chris is Woody.
