I'm not all that familiar with Buffalo sports media but I doubt that a backwater like Buffalo NY is anything like the NYPost
Rex is still talking crap and the Bills fans are eating it up. Kind of like the character (Divine) in that John Waters film who eats shit. Yesterday he told the media that he deserved to be fired by the Jets. And that Woody Johnson (who he still loves) had no choice but to fire him and rebuild. I don't remember him talking like this the day after he was fired. He said he was a good coach etc. Again just shut up and coach your team. These kind of BS statements and your histrionics only work for a while. Of course they worked in New York and the press kissed his ass for six seasons.
One more thing about Mr. Full of shit. When Rex was Dc with the Ravens his players in Baltimore loved him and wanted him to be their next head coach. But Ozzie Newsome knew better and selected an outside coach who wasn't even a Coordinator over him. He knew that while Rex could function as Dc he wouldn't be a good head coach. You can't go by who the players like.
the lack of talent caught up w/ him. when he had it he was in the playoffs or competing for the playoffs, when he didn't he struggled but still competed for the playoffs outside of last year.
It's true the tslent went down and wasn't adequately replenished. But coaching was also a part of the reason for 4 bad seasons. It was below average. For the most part we were usually out coached. He's right this time. He should have been fired.
I would love to see anybody do better than four wins with those defensive backs and QB he was forced to use last year..anybody.
A lot of coaches last season did better than that with makeshift secondaries. There was a rash of Db injuries last season and guys who had less experience than our guys like Walls and Williams were being signed off of the streets and starting a week later. The Cb excuse for a 4-12 just doesn't stand up.
That wasn't makeshift, that was complete lack of talent coupled with people playing in spots where they had no place being because there was nobody else. CB was the primary reason with the most TDs given up by anybody but of course you are right that it wasn't the only reason, Smith was just as big a part of why.
While I don't agree (and to be fair it was partially due to injuries) you're in the majority. I think with better coaching our secondary would have executed better. And that includes game planning on defense and schemes. I also don't think the guys who ended up starting like Walls and Williams are that bad. I saw other teams like the Steelers with injuries to their secondary compensate better than Rex did. As for Qb: not very good but I didn't love the coaching either esp the play calling. A 2nd year struggling Qb and an experienced and formerly accomplished backup who didn't want to be there. Good coaching can sometimes camoflage weaknesses in personnel. Not with the 2014 Jets who as Rex often said were outcoached.
He'll get another chance in Buff. He wasn't a good head coach here. When he had the talent he won. And you have to give him credit for that it wasn't easy esp with a rookie Qb. He also got some help from other teams like the Colts to make the playoffs. 2012 he did a horrible job and should have been fired. He was pretty lucky in 2013 but did ok for the talent. He was never and will never be "amazing." He's a below average head coach something Ozzie Newsome knew years ago.
he did an amazing job in 2012 to keep us in the playoff race in December- AMAZING. w/ the injuries and lack of depth that we had 2012 should have looked like 2014 did. he would have won multiple championships in Baltimore.
He isn't the worst head coach in the NFL but he's in the bottom half. His offenses have been mostly bad. He has to take responsibility for a good part of that. His team's D stats have been good but the D despite all of his first round picks gave up the most important stat: points allowed and were routinely terrible on 3rd and longs. The team often seemed unprepared and had to call time outs because they were disorganized. His inability at calling challenges hurt the team. And his team was penalized a lot. It was embarrassing at times. He did not know how to manage West Coast trips and his team's had poor records in these games. He was "amazing"- what about getting his ass kicked two times by Marrone last year including the game in Detroit when Buff had little time to prepare and the Jets did. No he doesn't suck as a HC. He proved he can win with talent. But that was years ago.
He did a good job with the Jets but never appeared to learn from his mistakes. You can start to see already how his Buffalo tenure will probably pan out - lots of short term moves already - expect them to be good for a couple of seasons until age and cap space catch up with them.
Mangini competed for the playoffs the year before. In fact he had the same record at 9-7. So what's your point? Rex coaches one way, despite talent or players. He's rah-rah cheerleader crap gets old quick. I guarantee you Belichick would have won more than four games last year with the same lineup. He's still doing it in Buffalo. He said that he wasn't sure if Revis and Cro would be starters in the Buffalo secondary. He's a buffoon that is not here anymore. Thank god.
yep and despite no Tom Brady and the weakest sched we have had in my lifetime we couldn't make the playoffs. oh and he had a future HOF QB. Belichick would have been out of a job, BB has done nothing w/o Tom Brady and even w/ Brady and a much more talented team Rex led the Jets to win over NE in the biggest game ever btw the 2 teams- on the road.
