He doesn't have to be all pro to be a good pick. If the guy can start at either LT or RT for 4 to 8 years and be solid it would be a great pick.
Did Becton put on his socks and underwear yet? I should start a poll. Where's @FJF when you need him? He's asleep on the job. I can't do it all.
How come he seems to have licence to keep chatting so much shit, normally the Turkish banhammer has swung by now. Look everybody is entitled to their opinion but the same one in every fucking thread?
According to my calculation on the exact day of the 31st of January in the year 2021 Mekhi Becton will play in his first pro bowl game which will be less than one full year since the time he was drafted.
Highly drafted WR's bust just as often as any other position. They also take longer to develop than most positions, with the 1-on-1 aspect of their job leading to a steep learning curve.
I recall doctson and laquan treadwell being cant miss stars from the first round of the same draft class.
When it comes to WR’s, nearly any WR that goes within round 1 could theoretically go in 2 or 3, and vice versa for all 3. The things that make the difference are so minute and easily changeable that it just doesn’t make sense to go that high to me when I really think about it. Who was QB? What was their dictated route tree? Who was their competition? Were they schemed open? We’re they told what techniques to use or were they given freedom? Did their QB like them?did their opposing CB’s have minor injuries the weeks they played them? Did they have diarrhea at the combine? Frankly with a spin of this wheel, any 3rd round WR likely has the tools to be a round 1 guy if things fell differently. The difference between WR in round 1 and WR in round 3 is not great enough with only 1 exception. All world speed. You cannot find Henry Ruggs in round 3, period. It is not possible. You cannot coach someone to that level of speed. History shows us that while Jeudy May be great, there is no reason a 2nd rd WR cannot be just as good within a year.
I respectfully, albeit strongly, disagree. WRs don't become 1st round picks just because of production or just because of physical traits/characteristics. The difference between them and WRs taken in the 2nd round and lower are not minute. There are differences in speed, athleticism, route-running ability, hands, ability to beat the press at the LOS, ability to change up their speeds on routes, understanding of offensive concepts, being able to read coverages, etc. I love Mims, but he isn't on the same level as Lamb, Jeudy and Ruggs, and may not be on the same level with Jefferson and a few other WRs. He's close in a number of ways. He certainly has better speed than either Jeudy or Lamb and is taller, but he isn't as polished a route runner as Jeudy, isn't as evasive as Lamb, and isn't as fast as Ruggs. His hands may not be as good as those three, either. Having a bad QB can definitely hamper a WR, and that's why I believe that highly-recruited high school WRs check that out and make sure that the universities that are recruiting them and that they are seriously considering will have a quality QB, or they will accept another university's offer that does have a quality QB. There are some that have talent, but aren't that highly recruited, that may not have the option of going to another university where their talents will be in the spotlight as much, or perhaps the starting QB at that school gets injured or transfers so they just have to do the best they can. I said before the draft that it was such a good draft for WRs that as many as 8 could go in the first round. I think 6 did. I'm shocked that Mims fell like he did, and I think teams will regret passing on him. There was definitely a sizable gap in the talent and ability of the WRs after Mims and maybe Edwards, just as there was a clear difference between the top 3 WRs (Lamb, Jeudy and Ruggs), and Justin Jefferson, Jalen Reagor, Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman, Jr. although the gap was much smaller from the top 3 to Jefferson and the rest of the 2nd tier. I'm surprised that Brandon Aiyuk went before Higgins, Mims, and Pittman, because I don't think he is as good a prospect, and I think he belonged on the next tier with Edwards, Hamler, and maybe Mims. I totally disagree with the assertion that a 3rd round WR has the tools to be a 1st round pick. If they did, they'd go in the 1st or at worst, 2nd round, unless character or injury issues made them fall. This suggests to me that you don't really value WRs.
This was a very strong post That’s why the Jets never draft WRs in the first round They simply don’t value them The Cowboys certainly do As do the Broncos
For the pro Jeudy crowd, please list a recent round 1 WR as a comparison for the type of impact you hope Jeudy could mimic -- candidate has to be round 1 I will venture to guess for each "impact" player there is a longer list of David Terrell's or Sammy Watkins (who is good but never quite lived the hype or contract) I will also venture to guess that there were just as impactful guys found in later rounds of the same draft In short I think Maximus is right
Have WRs taken in the first round failed or been disappointing? Yes, but so have OTs, RB, QBs, etc. Yes there are players that are taken in the middle or lower rounds, that every team misjudged and they wind up becoming stars. They are the exceptions, not the rule. The best chances for finding elite or topflight talent is by taking the players you have rated the highest, thus as 1st round picks. Devaluing the WR position or developing a fear of drafting a WR in the 1st round because others have been busts or disappointment, is a logic failure that will doom your offense to never having an elite WR, and is a huge mistake imo. IMO Ozzie Newsome only had two weaknesses as a GM. He couldn't identify great QB prospects (or refused to spend the draft capital to trade up to take one), and either couldn't identify top WR talent or undervalued the position. He never drafted a quality player at either position. I hope and pray that Douglas will be smarter and better than Newsome in that regard.
Not a “pro jeudy” guy just anti devaluing the WR position Torrey Smith Julio Jones Amari Cooper Back further Calvin Johnson Andre Johnson Javon Walker Reggie Wayne Torry Holt Michael Irvin When you remove the following flags from 1st round WR bust examples the risk drastically dwindles. 1.Injuries/medical 2.Character/off the field 3.Obvious overdrafting-Troy Williamson/Corey Davis/tedd gunn JR etc 4.Terrible QB situation In fact, take a look at the success rate of 1st round WRs who stayed healthy/clean off the field who went to teams w franchise QBs.Compelling stuff
How many meet that strict perfection personified category Let's face with everything in their favour it would be harder to bust than succeed. ps apologies if you were being sarcastic, it really is hard to tell with no smilies in use
i wasnt joking. Injuries aside if your QB situation is solid It comes down to scouting. How many guys did we as fans and/or scouts know were major risks or reaches right off the bat? Troy Williamson Darrius Heyward Bey Tedd Ginn Jr John Ross Justin Blackmon(scouts knew he had issues) Charles Rogers(Scouts knew he had issues) Clean prospects who no one questions are 1st round talents shouldnt be lumped in w guys listed above & be devalued. Legit WRs who get taken where they should in RD 1 & go to good situations have success.
Well, let's face it that would apply to everybody and anybody drafted, if you go to a good place and are a good clean living boy with no issues and have talent then the chances are you will succeed whether you are a WR or QB or RB or LT or you could get drafted by the Browns
FWIW, here are my clean WR prospects for next year's draft: Ja'Marr Chase Justyn Ross Jaylen Waddle DeVonta Smith Get one of them and our WR group will become good again. Any of those guys can make an impact on day 1.
Precisely. Its true about every position. My point is not devaluing the position or any position on an all encompassing level bc of prior Bad personnel decisions or bad scouting. Edit:Except for DT
