Wilson definitely has a higher ceiling than Darnold, not sure his floor is higher than Darnold's ceiling. that's kind of not a serious comment. You're acting like Darnold never made any plays here EVER. Darnold development has been stunted due to Adam Gase. and the QB we just played Tannehill and Darnold's 3-1 start is a testament to that. No young QB would have ever flourished under the debacle that was the Jets for the last 3 years. Le'Veon Bell Breshad Permian Quincy Enuwa These were all the marquee go-to guys around Darnold who are NOW barely even on NFL rosters now. This was like 2 years ago. You guys really need to stop with the comparisons. Wilson's situation is wayyyyyyy better. It just is.
I’ve said this since before Darnold was drafted, and I’ll continue to say it, but any team with darnold (or a qb like Darnold) is just wasting time and money. Guys like him, Derek Carr, Kirk cousins, etc. are very good qbs, but aren’t elite and will never be elite. You aren’t going through guys like Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, Wilson, Allen, Dak, Lamar, Kyler and Herbert if you don’t have one of those types of players. Congrats to the panthers this year, they’ll win 10-12 games and then lose in the first or second round to one of those qbs (like they did on Sunday) and they’ll do that year after year until they get an elite qb. “Haha, look how well Darnold is playing, we robbed the jets.” Well, the jokes on them. Yes, the jets traded the better qb, but I’d rather be 1-15 with Zach Wilson and at least keep trying to find an elite talent then resign myself to never winning a championship like the panthers are doing. If Wilson doesn’t work out, draft the next guy and try again. Who cares how many losing seasons you have. You keep going until you find a guy. Any team going into the year with guys like Darnold, Carr, cousins, jameis, bridgewater, etc just guaranteed to throw the year away. What a waste of time
Very reasonable take. Zach played well last weekend and that makes all of us feel good about his future but he's still got a lot of things that he needs to clean up before we anoint him the next Mahomes. Just like we can't say he's the next Mahomes after last weekend, we can't say he's a bust just because of the Pats debacle.
I agree with your basic premise, but to say that Sam Darnold is a better QB than Zach Wilson is laughable. Sam can only dream about doing what Zach can do in terms of reading the D, accuracy,"it" factor, leadership, decision making, etc.
You’re saying that right now Zach is a better qb than Sam? LOL I should clarify, my original statement that “the jets traded the better qb” means right now, for this year.
He's right, Sam is definitely the better QB right now. Hard to argue the QB that is leading the league in INT's is better than anyone at the moment. Will he be the better QB in 1 year? 2 years? 10 years? That's the more important question and one that we all hope the Jets got right when they drafted Wilson and traded Sam.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. If he were playing in this system, Sam would be a disaster. Zach would probably be even better in Carolina's system. Zach can do things that Sam can't begin to do. I can't think of one single thing that Sam can do better than Zach. His stats may be better, but if you take away all the dropped passes and 4 interceptions that clearly weren't his fault, Zach's stats are probably better. If I had to pick between the two to win one game in any offensive system, it would be Zach. That makes him better imo.
Yes, I am. Disagree if you want. In addition to his not being able to read Ds, but with the pounding he would have taken (and it probably would have been worse than what Zach has), Sam wouldn't even be able to function in this offense. Sam couldn't have made any of those 4 throws on Sunday. Zach processes so much more quickly and has greater arm talent, better poise and pocket presence. Sam's experience helps, but without McCaffery he's been a little lost. Zach has been held back by the OL, WRs dropping passes, and the play calling. Sure, he's made some rookie mistakes, but he already looks more like an NFL QB than Sam ever has or will.
Is Zach > Sam + 2021 1st round pick + 2022 1st round pick + 2023 1st round pick? Zach has to be more than just a 'little better'...he has to be three 1st round picks better just to break even. But after those 5 big throws last Sunday he might already be.
Technically it would be just 2 extra 1sts because we just would've swapped 2021 1sts with someone, probably the Niners. The equation should read, is Zach + 2021 6th rounder + 2022 2nd rounder + 2022 4th rounder > Sam + 2021 1st pick swap (probably down to the Niners at 12) + 2022 1st + 2023 1st + 2022 2nd. Just to be clear, I still take side with Zach on it.
I get it, I've got high hopes for Zach too. I just don't think at this moment in time he's better than Sam and the stats back that up. Does Zach have better arm talent? Sure. Can Zach make throws that Sam can't make? Sure. Will he eventually be a much better QB than Sam? I think so, and I'm sure the rest of this board hopes so. All of those can be true but it doesn't change the fact that right now Sam is a better NFL QB. Which is not a knock on Zach, I would think most, if not all, 4th year QB's that are starters in the NFL would be better than a rookie who is 4 games into their career. All that being said, I still think the Jets made the right move by trading Sam and drafting Zach. I think Zach's ceiling is much higher than Sam's and we got a glimpse of how that could look on Sunday.
He might be a better runner. He's a little bigger and stronger top to bottom, but no QB has won it all just because they could run.
If we kept Sam, yes, we would have swaped 2021 1st round picks but we'd still get to use SanFran's 2021 1st round pick on a player this year, plus their '22 '23 picks, so that's three 1st round players to go along with Sam. We would have dropped from #2 to #11 or whatever slot they were in, but we'd have gotten to choose a good player at that spot, right?
You're right. I guess I read it as you saying that we would've gotten an extra 1st in 2021. I stand corrected.
I can live with you and anyone else thinking that. Sam is more experienced, is a little bigger, and a better runner or more willing to run. When Sam struggles to read Ds, still makes bad decisions, and doesn't have the arm talent Zach has, how can he be better? Just because he's been in the league 3 years doesn't mean he's a better QB. It just means he has already adjusted to the speed of the NFL and is more experienced. It may be just semantics, but I don't see Sam as better.
