He's old and slow down the field, but he is fast enough for RZ plays. He could also work as a TE, no need for blazing speed.
No Plaxico. He'd be the 2nd best receiver by default in this group and we already know where Plax and Holmes goes at this point: nowhere. What the Jets need is a savvy vet who would rotate with Hill so as not to over-expose him early. Hill is going to be good for maybe 25-30 catches this season. The Jets need to find a guy who can catch 35-40 reliably without getting huffy about playing time in the process. Maybe Donald Driver pops loose on Friday. The difference between signing a vet to fill some snaps this year and doing it last year is that it's done as a cover move to give the young guy a chance to progress. Last year the Jets had two older receivers trying to fill different roles. It was hard for Mason to make an impact when Plax was on one side and Holmes on the other. It really came down to the 3 WR sets and he was taking limited snaps away from Kerley in the process. This year the Jets should want to take 40-50% of the snaps away from Hill. Give him some real seasoning on the field but don't turn his season into a progression of busted 3rd down plays where the offense fails because he can't hold up his end yet.
You've got my vote. Plax gives us a big 6-5" receiver that isn't just good in the redzone, he's good overall. I'd give him more than the vet minimum, maybe not as much as last year but I would get him signed now.
Totally agree here, and I do think we bring somebody else in before the opener, but my guess is he's currently on somebody else's roster, not on the street.
I honestly think rex and lal and Mike T should grab holmes and Sanchez and say......Guys we need another WR who do you want?? T.O, Burress, Chad Johnson, wait and see if edwards gets cut or trade a 7th for him?? Pick 1 or 2. I really think they will wait till next friday see who gets cut but they need someone! I also think we may need to call jeremy shockey!
I was thinking the same thing last night. It would be nice if we can pick a decent WR up from the waiver wire. It's too bad so many vet WRs are knuckleheads.
I'm down with signing T.O. He still ha NFL speed and he can tech our guys a thing or two about running routes.
Maybe the reason why we haven't signed anybody is probably because Tony & Rex feel good abt Tebow in the RZ??
Yeah that's true. I went looking for the kind of guys I would like on the Jets to fill the role and there are maybe 2 and neither of them likely to come loose. Driver, Cotchery, maybe Houshmanzadeh as a free agent, although Housh is old and showing it. The key is the guy has to know his role and has to be non-toxic in the clubhouse. Chad Johnson is no good because of point one and TO due to point two.
Pats also just cut donte stallworth........was very good before he hit a guy with a car but he is younger than everyone and still could be good!
We also haven't really gotten to see what Chaz Schillens can bring to the table in the red zone. He has great size at 6'5" and could be a good red zone threat
The reason that we haven't had the opportunity to see Schilens is that the injury-prone player is injured again. Our real standout in training camp who brings something new to the team is an oft-injured vet (again.) Talent is really important but things like ability to stay on the field are at least as important.
I think of all of them Plax makes the most sense because he already has some chemistry with Sanchez. He put up 8 TD's and 650 yards last year under Schottenheimer, which is saying something. Plus we can sign him for a reasonable number. Seems like the logical choice here.
There's a reason we haven't signed him yet. He was the locker room terror more so than holmes. I like the guy purely based on talent and RZ efficiency but I don't think Rex can handle his attitude.
