The only irony I see is that both Ryan brothers are intimately involved in Mangini's past / future. Rex takes over for him in NY after Mangini was fired and Rob becomes his defensive coordinator in Cleveland.
It's all perception. A couple years ago when the Jets were having a better season, Mangini was "composed" and Tom Coughlin was "out of control", now Mangini is "dead" and Coughlin is "motivating." It all depends on what you do on the field, Herm Edwards was as animated as anyone.
I agree. Mangini is going to be an excellent head coach. He just couldn't stay here after that collapse.
A 23-25 record isn't that bad when you consider what he inherited and it was his first job at a young age. Look at Walt Michaels first four years, if we didn't stick with him we wouldn't have had the Sack Exchange era.
Yeah I'm still shaking my head on that one also. Crennel actually understood the Pat's defense he just couldn't make it work without the front 7 guys he had on the Pats. Mangini never showed us that he actually understood how the Pats defense worked, and he did show us that he was incapable of making the halftime adjustments on that side of the ball that have gotten Belichik to the hall of fame. Cleveland made a huge mistake here.
thought it was obvious--the Baker game/call mentioned in the thread was in cleveland--mangini is now in cleveland
Thanks for the intelligent post... I mentioned this during last season and preseason, but it seemed to go over a lot of people's heads... A lot of people do not seem to understand that the Jets (and most NYC sports teams) aren't just a sports team, they're media conglomerates. Look at the Yankees with the YES network, and now SNY with the Mets and Jets. Yes, the press conferences and the coach's demeanor matter, if the guy is expected to coach in New York City and to appear on TV and radio. This is an important part of the job description. But I thought it was more telling when the 1969 Jets gathered for a half-time celebration of the Super Bowl triumph, and several of them complained that too many coaches in the NFL never played in the NFL--an obvious reference to Mangini... Ryan never played, but at least he has a Jets pedigree. This is the best Jets hiring since Parcells, IMHO.
It's ironic because he is a shitty coach and now he ahs to wear Brown. Oh wait that is a coincidence. I too failed too see the irony.
I think, one day, Mangini will become a great coach. Belichick himself had awful seasons, when he began his coaching career. I wasn't hoping for Mangini to leave, but I love the Rex Ryan signing. Gotta love Rex's attack mentality. The Sack Exchange, I'm sure, is proud of this day.
Long I enjoy your posts but lately man your sarcasm has been through the roof. You sound like you've been defeated by life.
Exactly. And, as I've posted many times before. look at bellicheat's first coaching stint in Cleveland. He was the Head coach of the Browns for 4 seasons before being let go (one more year than Mangini) and had a WORSE winnning percentage than Mangini, with the same number of playoff appearances (1). The Browns were impatient with him and let him go. We all know how he did when he got another shot . . . And btw, his first year in NE, most people forget, was a bad one: a dismal 5-11 campaign. Then the Pats drafted Tom Brady . . .
I'll tell you what is ironic, the jets defense next year! And by that I mean that it will be made of or consist of iron! Who knew jets fans were so literary. Its also ironic that a board known for threads comparing mangini and ryan's man boobs is so concerned with the poper use of the word ironic.
