my answer to that is simple: the reason people "forget" that is because who in the hell cares??????? the Jets were a joke prior to Parcells. He wasn't brought in here to manage the cap. He was brought in to turn the fortunes of this franchise around - which he did and ALMOST completed the job. So they were up against the cap a few years after he left?? who the hell cares. He left them with some nice young pieces, a HOF RB, and 4 1st round draft picks. You have to really have a bias against Parcells to look at his tenure with the Jets and point out that he left them in cap trouble. I mean are you kidding me?
he did a great job as a coach, he did a terrible job as a GM. I appreciate everything he did as a coach in bringing us out of the dark ages but I don't bow down to him like you and some others. he screwed us as a GM w/ horrible drafts, horrible cap mgmt. and costing us bill Belichick.
the man gave Bryan Cox a new deal just before leaving knowing we had to cut him b/c of the cap. he didn't care about our future but I do appreciate what he did as a HC.
I just don't understand how anybody could not appreciate the magnitude of what Parcells did for this organization, We went from being laughingstocks (literally) to the AFC Championship Game in two seasons flat. He left us with two QB's and two passrushers who when healthy got us to 4 playoff appearance in 6 years. Some of the stuff junc writes is dubious but the Parcells stuff is just ludicrous. It's like he's living in a different reality from the rest of us.
Yeah, it's Aboushi and Will Campbell behind Colon on the depth chart and apparently Campbell is wearing a hard cast on his arm...
coming from the guy who thinks BP was a great GM for us I would expect nothing less. you talking about living in a different reality again, I appreciate what he did as a coach but he was beyond awful as a GM type. he inherited a very talented roster AND the #1 OVERALL pick. he traded a bunch of picks to acquire more and it was bust after bust after bust. he cost us Peyton Manning, he cost us Bill Belichick and in turn Tom Brady. That all gets factored in, all time great HC, all time mediocre GM type.
The best two guards in camp will play. No idea who those are right now but like many other spots on the roster guard has several people trying to impress. There's a lot of money to be made for whoever makes things work this year. We don't think about this a lot but a guy who plays guard in the NFL for 5 or 6 seasons as a starter makes something like $3M minimum before he's done. That's a huge incentive and one of the reasons that competition is such a good thing. Put the gold ring out there and you'll get lots of people trying to grab it. Hand it to one guy and you lose the field.
It was a typical response, one that is honest, knowledgeable and well thought out. Hopefully some day you can post like that.
And while this may sound like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, one of the first things that Parcells did when he came in was to (even as a 'Giant' guy) make mention of the 'history' of the New York Jets and ditch the "Marshall University-80's" unis and return to their classic AFL uniforms……when the Chargers, Raiders & Jets wore the iconic unis of the AFL (identity). And if you recall, the Giants did the same thing, getting rid of their "John McVay-era" unis and going back to their classic unis (grey pants, red numerals on their white visiting jerseys, "NY" replacing "Giants" on the helmet, etc.).
Whoa junc, I think you read Browning wrong, I think he was being complimentary. Myself I read it as putting you up there with Charles Dickens and citing his "Tale of Two Cities" opening line as emblematic of a 'typical' junc post: "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.." High praise indeed ; )
