Since many of you don't like our current kicker here's a good one:

Patriots opt not to protect Vinatieri with franchise tag
    Feb. 24, 2006
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Adam Vinatieri may get a chance to test free agency after the New England Patriots declined to protect the man who kicked two Super Bowl-winning field goals with the franchise player tag.

The designation would have forced the team to commit to a one-year $3 million offer to Vinatieri. Without the tag, the team will not be compensated if he signs with someone else.

"It just didn't feel like the right thing to do," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "We considered all our options and decided not to tag anybody."

The Patriots still have until March 3 to sign Vinatieri. But negotiations around the league have been held up because the collective bargaining agreement between the players' union and the teams is set to expire next week, and 2006 salary cap numbers remain unknown.

"I don't think you can do much of anything," Belichick said Thursday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. "I don't know what we're working with (financially). Until that's defined, it seems like an exercise in futility."

A message left Friday for Vinatieri's agent, Jonathan Hurst, was not immediately returned.

Vinatieri, 33, has been named the team's franchise player twice, including last year, when he was paid $2.5 million.

The Patriots have 17 unrestricted free agents, with Vinatieri and receiver David Givens the most notable.

"Every situation is independent," Belichick said. "It takes two parties, or three to a point, to make a deal, and when that happens, we have one, and if it doesn't, we don't."

Wow, maybe the Jets can get all these guys!

INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay's Brett Favre, Tennessee's Steve McNair and Minnesota's Daunte Culpepper face uncertain futures with their teams.

Officials with the Packers, Titans and Vikings all say they're proceeding like their star quarterbacks will be around next season.

Favre triggered retirement rumors after the Packers stumbled to an uncharacteristic 4-12 finish. Ted Thompson, the Packers' general manager, said he's not rushing the 36-year-old to make a decision, though he'd like to know soon enough so he can adjust if necessary.

"No, we've not tried to establish any sort of timetable," Thompson said. "He's played a long time, and I think it's important for him sit down and think it through to make the best decision for him.

"Physically, he thinks he can do it, but he wants to make sure, I think, mentally that he's ready to do it."

McNair, 33, has been the face of the Tennessee franchise since 1997, when he became a starter in his third year in the league. The former MVP has played through injuries for much of his career and there is also questions about his contract.

The Titans face a deadline in March of either paying $50 million to extend the quarterback's contract through 2009 or a $1 million fee that would take his deal through 2006. He is scheduled for $9 million in base salary for 2006.

"I'm confident that we'll get things worked out with Steve," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. "I said that all along. We've got some paperwork to do, and we've got some time yet to do it. He can still play at a high level in this league, and I expect it to be for us."

The Titans have the third overall pick in the draft, and could use it on a quarterback.

"We have to look at the future as far as the quarterback position is concerned," Fisher said. "That doesn't mean that Steve's not coming back or that he can't play a couple more years, but we're at the point now where we have to address it."

After a dynamic 2004 campaign, Culpepper injured his right knee last October and missed the rest of the season. Rumors have been circulating that the Vikings are trying to trade him, but team owner Zygi Wilf assured Culpepper that Minnesota has not spoken to other teams about a potential trade. New coach Brad Childress said he's going to continue as if Culpepper will be a Viking this season.

Unless they try Miller there the Jets still need a punt returner.

A week after placing sixth in moguls, Bloom jumps to combine
    Feb. 24, 2006
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jeremy Bloom walked to the podium Friday wearing the appropriate attire and buoyed by excitement at finally getting a chance to play football.

Or at least work out at it.

His gray sweatshirt had the usual NFL scouting combine lettering "WO 8" while his blue sweat pants were words that don't fith the NFL: "USA Team 2006."

    Welcome to double duty, Olympian.

"Oh man, I'm on top of the world," Bloom said, three days after arriving in Indianapolis to chase his other passion -- football. "I dreamed big as a kid, but I never dreamed that in a span of one week, I'd be competing in the Olympics and at the NFL combine."

Bloom finished sixth in the Olympic moguls last week in Turin, Italy. By Friday, he was undergoing the usual routine of the medical checks, poking and prodding that more than 300 invitees endure in Indy.

The difference for Bloom: He may be the unlikeliest NFL prospect in town.

Bloom hasn't played football in two years, since losing an eligibility battle with the NCAA after accepting endorsement money to fund his freestyle skiing career -- a decision that still irks him.

"Football has been a huge passion of mine since I was a kid, and, unfortunately, I had it taken away from me by the NCAA," he said. "But they're not in the building today."

Bloom appeared to be suffering from jet lag. He appeared tired as he asked reporters what day it was and jokingly wondered whether it was 3 a.m. when it was really midafternoon.

His whirlwind travels included a trip to a shoe store where he finally found a pair of cleats so he could run the 40-yard dash Saturday.

On Friday, it was more mundane. He measured in at 5-foot-9, 173 pounds, tiny by NFL standards - even for a wide receiver or punt returner. He said he hopes to add about 15 pounds before his personal workout in California, and answered questions for about 15 minutes, explaining why he looked so small.

"That's my ski weight," he said. "Skiing is kind of a bell curve of speed and weight, so I have to basically starve myself to get to 170."

Maybe they'll cut him and Jets can pick him up to replace Hobson.

Broncos linebacker Williams sentenced for driving impaired
    Feb. 24, 2006
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams pleaded guilty to driving while ability impaired and was sentenced to a year of probation and 24 hours of community service, according to newspaper reports.

Williams, the Broncos' top draft pick in 2004, entered his plea to the reduced charge on Wednesday, District Attorney spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh told the Denver Post. He had been charged with two counts of driving under the influence and weaving. The Rocky Mountain News also reported the plea on its website Thursday.

Walsh, when reached late Thursday by the Associated Press, said she was away from her office and could not release information.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Williams on Sept. 23 as he returned home from a birthday party. He said in October that he was embarrassed, and he should have asked someone else to drive him home.

As part of the plea agreement, the 23-year-old Williams must also pay court costs and fines, and attend a victim impact panel.

Broncos spokesman Paul Kirk said the team had no comment.

Williams played in all 16 games last season, starting 14 and recording 44 solo tackles. He also had seven tackles in Denver's 27-13 playoff win over the New England Patriots.

Dang, looks like Culpepper might be out of the picture.

Childress expects Vikes to retain Culpepper, Johnson
    Feb. 24, 2006
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

Downplaying the trade speculation surrounding Daunte Culpepper, Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress asserted that he plans to have both Culpepper and Brad Johnson on the team this year at quarterback.

"That's the mindset," Childress said Friday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "I don't know anything to the contrary."

Culpepper, meanwhile, said in an e-mail that he has not heard from the team in regard to his request for further talks about his contract.

A day earlier, Culpepper wrote that he was assured by owner Zygi Wilf in a phone conversation earlier this week the Vikings have "not yet spoken to other teams about trading" him.

The injured quarterback, who tore three ligaments in his right knee in an Oct. 30 game and has been rehabilitating in his native Florida, also said he told Wilf he wasn't happy with what he's been reading in the news -- and what he hasn't been hearing from the club.

"I shared my disappointment with the lack of communication and the false reports about me demanding more money coming out of Minnesota," said Culpepper, who let go of his agent last month and has been representing himself.

Culpepper's statement also mentioned that he offered to move his $6 million roster bonus, which is set to be paid on March 17, to another date to help the Vikings sign more free agents under the salary cap -- though the team is projected to have plenty of room.

"If I am not traded, I want to help coach Childress make a serious run for the championship this year," Culpepper said.

Childress acknowledged that the team has had inquiries about Culpepper, with the free agent and trading period set to begin next weekend.

"That's what goes on this time of year," he said.

But the coach diverted his comments toward Culpepper's knee. He's projected to return for training camp, but that's not a guarantee.

"He's three months out of a major surgery," Childress said. "Before we do anything, we're going to get him back to health.

"All my talk with the trainers is about getting him back to the level of play he was at in 2004."

That's when Culpepper was chosen for his third Pro Bowl after setting several franchise records and establishing an NFL mark for most combined rushing and passing yardage. But playing without receiver Randy Moss, center Matt Birk and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Scott Linehan, Culpepper started last season poorly and then suffered the devastating injury.

"All of the discussion about me being traded or cut has helped me realize that the contract I have ran out of guarantees the day I was injured," he said. "Therefore each year they pay you to play is a gift. I expect that if there are no changes to my present contract then I should prepare for a year by year commitment. When I am ready to hit the field this year, wherever it may be, I plan on being better than ever and enjoying the ride."

I guess the Jets won't be able to get this guy either.

    Bears re-sign lineman St. Clair
    Feb. 24, 2006
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears signed offensive lineman John St. Clair to a three-year contract on Friday.

St. Clair appeared in 13 games and started twice for the Bears last season -- at left tackle against Minnesota and right tackle against San Francisco. The 6-foot-6, 318-pound St. Clair signed with the Bears last September after spending a season with the Miami Dolphins.

A third-round draft pick by St. Louis in 2000, St. Clair started 16 games for the Rams in 2002 and appeared in 16 games in 2003.
