Mark Sanchez- We are stuck with him whether we like it or not for next year it least. I'd bring in a proven backup that can push him and not be a circus behind him like Tebow. So needless to say cut Tebow as well. Bart Scott- I love Bart but it's time to move on. He's old and slow now. Thanks for your contributions, there's the door. Brandon Moore- Same as Bart. Although if there is no upgrade out there I wouldnt be opposed to keeping him and drafting a guy to groom behind him. Kyle Wilson- I'd keep him. He's proving he's not a starter but he still has value as depth and does have potential. Dustin Keller- Has to be resigned. Keller is a dynamic weapon who can work the middle of the field and stretch the field. He's a matchup nightmare. The Jets need more guys like him on offense so needless to say they shouldnt be looking to get rid of him. Eric Smith- Cut Mike DeVito- On the right deal i'd take him back. He is a good rotational player. Although if the front office thinks Ellis is ready to step up i'd let him go and go with Coples, Wilk, Pouha, and Ellis. LaRon Landry- The Jets ranked 27th in the league last year against tight ends. This year at this point they rank 22nd. It's an improvement, is it great? Absolutely not. It's not all on Landry either seeing as our linebackers are old and cant cover and Bell has to take some of the blame as well. With that said I like Landry in Rex and Pettine's system. I think he fits well so if the price is right i'd definitely resign him. Shonn Greene- I am still a Greene supporter. I like him in a 2 back system as the second back. I think he fits well there. But the Jets need to bring in another RB to take some of the workload away from him. Matt Slauson- He is not a starting caliber player. With Sanchez at QB we need to emulate the formula we had when we were successful and that starts with a strong O-Line. Bell- He's another guy I wouldn't mind bringing back on our terms. But I would rather upgrade. Maybin- The Jets have to ask themselves this question. Can Maybin effectively generate a pass rush when he plays? If they think he can then bring him back, you can never have to many pass rushers and Maybin isnt going to cost a lot. But if they don't see anything in Maybin that resembles 2011 by the end of this year i'd let him go. Malone- Bring him back, why not?
Ftr I understand the arguments about Sanchez and his contract. I had a huge problem with the extension when it was done last off season. I know what it means. But it is not strictly true that the Jets MUST keep him and play him next year. Yeah there'd be a big hit and all that, and a trade would be difficult, too. But as it stands right now he does not deserve to be the starting Qb next year (don't event talk about this year). The Jets cannot sacrifice their whole season next year just because of one player's contract.
As for the rest of it, I won't go over the whole list, but... Bell. I think he's been serviceable, but that's about it. I don't know that I'd bring him back. Slauson and Moore. The Jets need two OG's over the next two years. I still don't buy that VD should be a starter. I think Moore is declining and Slauson is somewhere between mediocre and average. I don't know that I would get rid of Slauson, but signing Moore to more than a one year deal while signing and OG this year (two seems unreasonable given all the other holes on the team) may be the smart move. And I agree that Landry should come back. But my favorite move I would make is to get rid of Tebow.
Hard decisions coming as i feel a rebuild is in order on offense.. The biggest cap issues I see are Sanchez and Holmes with guaranteed contracts. Neither should be earning that much money, and i'm past ready to part ways with them both. We need a QB, a playmaker, and emphasis on re-establishing a strong o-line...specifically Guards. If obtaining talent in those spots means moving on from some current players, so be it. Tebow gone. trade if possible. Keller and Greene i'd re-sign only if the price was right. If not, let them move on. They are both really just role players, and not every snap guys. Slauson and Moore, I'd rather see us move in another direction. ftr, i have been a long time Moore fan. He's getting up there in age now though, and the decline in play has begun. Jason Smith, likely gone unless real cheap new contract. Howard stays. Scott i might keep if he would agree to a contract a little above vet min. He adds some fire, and is still pretty good at stopping the run. no way for current contract though. Pace and Thomas probably done. maybe keep 1 at vet min short term as we do have other areas to address. If not, gone. Maybin gone. Bell likely gone. Kyle Wilson under contract. stays. Devito i would keep if we do plan on more 3-4 fronts. Again, so many holes on offense and LB to fill. Landry i would invest in. Malone, lets see rest of season. He's playing for a contract and so far earning one.
Brandon Moore is declining and part of our problem on OL. He and Slauson need to be replaced ASAP imo. Moore has been a great Jet and I respect the hell outta him but we need to get a younger, stronger mauler. He hasn't been the same since the hip injury.
This team needs to be gutted. Write off the next couple of seasons to rebuild the front 7 on defense and offensive line. I like what we have at WR and D-line but both need time to develop. Secondary is among the best in the NFL
I nominate this for best post ever. Or, at the very least, the one that mirrors my thinking perfectly.
This is the NFL. The ONLY way you write off a season is if you're starting a first or second year quarterback, and even then you should still try to win. Writing off seasons is ridiculous. You always try to win. There's some talent on this team. There are holes to fill, absolutely. Are there a lot of holes? Sure, but there's also some really good players and some good young talent on this team, too. Make the right choices in personnel, and the Jets could be right back as one of the top 10 teams in the NFL for sure. Make the wrong ones, and we can fall back again. I won't write off this season yet. The AFC stinks. I think the Jets are pretty bad, too, but the NFL offseason is way too long to talk about this crap now, and the way we're going, we can safely talk offseason in a month. Right now? Beat Seattle, beat St. Louis, and find a way. This Seattle game is as tough as any game left on our schedule, including New England. If the Jets can find a way to win this game, then St. Louis doesn't look so tough (how will they score?). Mostly agree with Br4d's take on things. Don't mind bringing most of those players back at the right deal, but you can't be too loyal to veterans in terms of shelling out money. Need to stay young and get better.
Ok, let's rehash this all again: take away those two championship game appearances, and where do you see that we've been so much better? I think we've been pretty much the exact same thing as we've always been - inconsistent, not as good as we should be, at times better than expected - still laying eggs at big times, still shooting ourselves in the foot, still making retarded draft picks and............the list goes on. Exactly HOW are we better the last four years? And do NOT say strictly because of those two games - we've gotten FURTHER in the past four years, but we aren't better.
Ladies and gentlemen of the GangGreen forum, I give you...........the KING OF THE SUNSHINERS! <<<applause and cheers>>>>
Sanchez isn't going anywhere. Bart, It's time to move on. Brandon Moore, maybe bring back on a 1 year deal. Getting old. Wilson has proven he isn't a starter, maybe bring back on a 1 year deal. Keller should be re-signed. Eric Smith, Peace! DeVito, Sign for depth for a year if the price is right. L.L. has been pretty good, would give him a new deal. Greene could go both ways but would be good back up RB. Slauson let go, maybe sign as depth. Bring back Bell on a 1 year deal if nothing else can be done for a safety. Mayhem has done nothing this year, as of now, bye! Malone ? Who cares.
I think the cap hit would be $12.65MM if they cut Sanchez in the off season. Is it possible? Sure. But do I think there is anyway possible the Jets take that hit (and have to pay another QB)? Not in 12.65MM years.
How is the most expensive player who will cause the biggest financial decision of the offseason left off the list???? Revi$$$$$$
Again, I get the cap hit. But if you look at next season with Mark Sanchez as the starting qb, we are getting to the point where you are also likely looking at a wasted season with no real prospect for success. I'd take the hit and deal with it rather than write off the whole season.
And how does everything fall into place? Who do you replace them with? It's not that easy. This isn't Madden.
