    Game over

    USA wins.

Now, we are only one tie against Portugal away from advancing from this tough group.

Come on now. Make it happen boys.

    That's a win!

What a bounce back. You could say we were outplayed at least 2/3 of the game.

That Ghana goal, the player mis-struck it and got lucky. He accidentally hit it with the outside of his shoe, causing it to go where no one expected.

Assuming we tie that would give us 4 points. So Unless Portugal shits on Ghana in game 3 where it'll help their goal differential we should be okay.

If anyone has ESPN3 the press conference is on and Dempsey absolutely broke his nose, said he was coughing up blood.

    Took it from someplace else

    In 2002:
Brazil get a questionable penalty in the 1st match of group stage
Defending champion (France) lost its opening match
    USA won its opening match
    USA beat Portugal
    USA reached quarter-finals

    In 2014:
Brazil get a questionable penalty in the 1st match of group stage – CHECK
Defending champion (Spain) lost its opening match – CHECK
USA won its opening match – CHECK
USA beat Portugal – still waiting
USA reached quarter-finals – still waiting

Ghana plays pretty dirty. Glad USA pulled off the win, especially if they are able to keep Portugal from advancing!

What's being overlooked here is that right now we are +5 on Portugal in goal diff. A draw puts us in really really good shape because Portugal won't beat Ghana by 5 goals.

The worst case scenario is we lose to Portugal and Ghana beats Germany. The best case is we win and Germany win and the last day of matches mean zilch other than placing. Germany can then fuck with us because depending on who they want (assuming it'd be Bosnia) they can choose to rest of they can slap us around. The bad news is finishing 2nd in the group likely gives us Argentina (unless I've got my groups mixed up)

That's all nice, but the way we played today, Portugal will even up their GD off of us. There were at least 3 shots on goal Ghana missed. Portugal won't miss those.
Unless Klinsman changes something in a hurry, this excitement will be short lived, I'm afraid.

I'm not so sure, I didn't really feel we had too many lapses. Yes Ghana had some chances but only a few of them were real good chances. You also have to consider that we had to adjust the game plan 20 minutes in after Jozy went down. We'll have 6 days to prepare for life without him. Much different when you lose a guy like that 20 minutes in. Portugal won't have Pepe or Coentrao arguably their 2 best defenders. I don't see the US being dominated in possession or having an inability to attack against Portugal like today.
