Two things. I think this move by Leon might help seal TJ's fate or help get what he wants. Whatever angle you wanna look at it from. I use the word might only because Tanny has proved to be creative in the past. I just hope they don't the promise something verbally then say they never said it. But I think the players are keen to this from past experiences. Plus now the Jets as of last year are making moves and the scent of money is everywhere. Leon is key in two phases of the game. ST and "O". He is a home run threat. One of the few that the Jets have. Maybe the only one. Not only are his physical abilities valuable his age is premium when coupled with his talent. I think this makes the Edwards trade more viable or gives the F.O. the excuse they need to go get him. If the Jets keep both T.J. & Neon we probably wont see a big WR here for at least another season. It's business move and a smart play. RB's historically are not too difficult to replace especially with a good offensive line. WR on the other hand is more challenging. My second point and I'll make it short. Shone Green made his appearance in rookie camp and showed promise he was worth the move to get him. The writing is on the wall that there might be a new sheriff in town at the RB spot causing more havoc. IMO Leon is the one to protect here. For the future.
I'm not saying we'll have A LOT of cap room... but right now (according to http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html) we have 10 millions in dead money which will help plus: cut Woody = 4 mill of the cap. Sheppard will be a FA = 3 mill of the cap. B. Thomas gone = 2.75 mill of the cap TJ probably cut = 1 or 2 mill saved. Sione Pouha cut = 1 mill saved. I know the cap isn't an exact science (at least for us since we don't know the contract details) and I know some contracts have encreased earnings next year (like D'Brick), but that's about 20 millions "freed up" that can be used to do whatever the Front Office feels more important. If I were the FO I'd re-negotiate with D'brick and Mangold next year, this offseason will already be difficult enough because of Sanchez and Leon (and possibly TJ) contracts. If anyone can correct me please do it... I'm just saying this by looking nyjetscap and doing the math... PS: all this considerations are pretty much in the air though since we have no idea how the CBA will effect next season's off-season.
It sucks that we have the only GM in the league who has holdout players. Why does this only happen to us???

I say this year we keep them (unless of course someone offers something interesting... not peanuts ). TJ can be useful, just as an insurance since Greene is a rookie and Leon needs to prove how many carries he can take. Thomas is needed because we still don't know how Gholston will pan out... and if he doesn't Thomas is the only backup at OLB. Plus we won't free up that much space by giving them away this year...
He deserves a raise, this is not an unknown. He is underpaid for what he brings to the team. No matter what Don says about him being a bitch.
As B-way pointed out yesterday, due to 2010 being the last league year of the current CBA, Leon will be a RFA following the season (6 years or more will be necessary for Unrestricted Free Agency). No tag necessary. We offer him a 1st and 3rd tender just like Kellen, and we either get our man, or a bunch of draft picks.
Agreed and I would throw the bank or the Tag at Mangold before Leon who I believe also runs out the end of this year? I'm not sure I would let Mangold go for a low first and a third, Leon I would.
That's correct...and I agree completely about tagging Mangold, though I would hope we'll sign him long-term before it comes to that. Franchise tags seem to create rifts between players and teams, something I don't want with Mangold. Another curious result of the Final League Year is that we will have a Franchise Tag AND a Transition Tag to use next offseason, so retaining players shouldn't be a problem when combined with the fact that the two guys we most need to keep will also be RFAs.

Thank you. Look... I love Leon as much as the next homer, but this guy is currently so overrated on this board that it drives me crazy. What has he done? Really... What has this guy done to think he can hold out? STFU and play our your rookie contract.
It would probably be good for the team to resign him before his rookie contract runs out. That's only if the team gets a discount for the upfront money a year early.
He hired his new agent. That's the full impetus for the holdout. While I do feel he deserves a new contract, and would like to see him get it this offseason to avoid a clusterfuck of new money next season, he's not holding out for his own sake. He's getting bad advice, which a lot of us feared when we heard about the switch.
He has far outplayed his rookie contract. In a year when every Jets fan anywhere was screaming for him to get the ball more, he scored 9 touchdowns last season and accounted for 56 points, 3rd place on the team behind TJ and Feely. That's not even mentioning the field position he gives us pretty much every game. Letting him play out his rookie contract would be a fucking disaster.
