23 M is a small price to pay to instill discipline on this team.

We don't have to cut him, but we can ice him. Wilks can simply not play him. Let him sit right next to Lazard and Gipson at the far end of the bench.

I feel like this is a good thing overall. This will be the first BIG true test in terms of AG. Is he who he says he is?
If he is, there is absolutely no way you can trot Stephens out there again unless he has some incredible improvement in practice.
AG is no nonsense, will play the best players. Stephens got bullied. That can't continue. It just can't.
    I'm curious what they do.

I don’t think it’s realistic to expect a guy you just signed to big money to get benched in week two. His snap count should absolutely come down considering he played 100% of them but I don’t have delusions of AZ Thomas taking over anytime before November.

but yeah. He’s just as terrible as everyone thought he was when we gave him that head scratching contracts. It’s usually not a good sign when fans of the team that just lost a player are celebrating that they lost him.

I think this is premature. We do not have anyone better. Yes, we drafted AZ Thomas with the 3d round pick, but he is slow and missed most of the camp. Most likely he is even worse than Stephens at this stage of his career. I think when Stephens signing was made everyone was surprised. I mean the guy literally allowed the most passing yards in NFL last year and we gave him a very large contract. He also played for a very good legendary defensive oriented coach, so it's not like the coaching was the problem. I thought he could have been had for a lot less.

A small hope was that AG being a former CB himself and deserves a benefit of the doubt to have the insight that no one else has. That turned out to be BS. Just like Gipson over Pritchett turned out to be BS. And again both of these moves were something EVERYONE thought were mistakes, just to various degrees. So, the lesson here is no that we should cut Stephens. We can't, we don't have anyone better. And even if AZ steps up at some point to start, we don't have a better back-up.

The lesson here is that AG does not know better than what common sense suggests, even when it comes to CBs. So far he cost us a game where we were better than the other team and should have won, but lost because of the coach. It was one game, so no, the sky is not falling, but hopefully he learns quickly on the job as I don't think effectively being out of the play-off picture by the Columbus day is acceptable outcome.

Stephens sticks with his man but his ball skills are horrendous and he doesn’t turn his head around. Kyle Wilson vibes.

maybe you consider moving Michael Carter outside and out of the slot. I think one of the rookies could run the slot. I would wait after Buffalo though, we need to cover the slot Sunday

Glenn just said your first sentence in his press conference with different words obviously. Doesn’t sound like he’s getting benched anytime soon which no one should have expected anyway.

Save a seat nearby for Quincy if he pulls another bonehead out of bounds tackle again. He should have been sent to the penalty box immediately.

I fucking knew letting Reed go was stupid…he was a very good CB, and in this league you need at least 2.

I also didn’t like letting Echols go…I think he’s better than Stephens too…sucked to see him on the Steelers. Mougey for sure should have found a way to keep Reed. And I have no idea why they let Echols go…that kid filled in well every time he was asked to for us.

I salute the poster who reminded me of what departed Jet CB never used to turn his head around and got abused regularly. The Immortal Kyle Wilson!!

For what it's worth, Reed looked even worse than Stephens yesterday.

He did? Hard to believe but I didn’t see that…I do try and watch all the games with the NFL App so I’ll look for that

Still…I’d rather have Reed than Stephens

Another thing: Reed had to want to be here in order for us to re-sign him. I'm pretty sure his ass wanted out halfway through last year.

He let the Jets know he was going to go FA in the offseason. He wasn't gonna hang around probably because he couldn't see anything getting better here and was tired of the clown show.

Yup, and I didn't blame him one bit. Losing Reed wasn't the issue... replacing him with someone who hasn't been good his entire career was the issue.

Yes…I hadn’t heard it specifically from Reed but I’ve heard that kind of story before…and I just feel like talk is talk, but money also talks.

Just because a player says he wants to move on doesn’t mean you can’t make an offer. And if you’re a shit team like we’ve been, sure, the offer is going to have to be higher than it may need to be from a better team…no doubt. But my point is we should have tried.

I felt the same when we let Moses walk a few years ago…sure I heard the talk track that he “wanted to play for a winner” and all that shit…well we didn’t even try to keep him. We should have. And by the way, he seemed to have no problem coming back to play for us last year.

So sure, all things being equal, a player will want to play for a better team, a winning team, a better coach, etc.

But all things are not equal, and sometimes money is the equalizer. I get you can’t overpay for everybody without crushing the cap, which means the GM needs to be smart in know who to pay and when to pay them. I’ll give Mougey props for locking up GW and Sauce maybe a bit earlier than absolutely needed, but I think it was the smart thing to do.

Just like I still think Mougey and AG should have tried harder, or at least tried a little bit, to resign Reed.

Because Stephens looks like dogshit. And a third round slow corner isn’t the answer either. Echols is better than the 3rd rounder, and pretty much on par with Stephens and cheaper.

Not loving this CB2 plan so far.

But hey, it’s only 1 game…I gotta hope this gets better as we get more game experience…as disappointed as I am in Wilks, I do think he’s a pretty good DC so he gets a little benefit of the doubt from me at this stage…
