Eh, the offense/defense thing is overrated to me, although I preferred offense as well. Sean McDonough’s team wins based on offense. Sean McVay this year is winning with defense. Sean Payton has consistently had good defenses in New Orleans. Arians has a great D in Tampa. Just hire the best head coach. He’ll have to hire a great staff around him to succeed no matter who it is
Those guys are the exceptions. Usually HCs can't help but gravitate towards what they coached for years, see the weaknesses there and want the prime resources directed there first. I don't trust any DCs. If JD hires one as our HC, I'll hope for the best, but will be prepared, and will have one foot out the door already.
Also hiring an offensive guy who will neglect the defense is just as bad. The offense/defense thing is highly overrated.
I don’t care what your background is but a lot of defensive guys “trust their defense” way too much late in games. That may have worked 20 years ago but it rarely does these days. You need to be aggressive in all facets of the game to be a good coach IMO
If whomever Joe hires as HC is dumb enough to hire an OC who couldn’t muster more than one (1) third down conversion before the fourth quarter against a team he beat two (2) weeks earlier, with (a) his entire starting OL healthy, (b) Metcalf, (c) Rocket Lockett, (d) not one but two healthy backs that netted 1K/ea last year, and (e) Tarkenton 2.0, then Joe shouldn’t have hired that candidate. I’ve seen some bad play calling, but that game was the worst. Not a single slant. No screen passes or QB draws to slow the rush. No shovel passes. No off tackle or counter runs. No formation consistency to hide plays. We could have called better plays using Madden, goddamn. Schotty deserved to get canned. TL;DR: No NFL team should hire Schotty this year.
NFL Network said we are bringing in Arthur Smith for an in person interview too. Seems like those are the finalists.
I think we need a strong leader more than anything. Saleh oozes confidence and results. He's got the track record (top defenses) and he just seems to be a born leader that players gravitate too. HIs high energy style is just what this franchise needs after years of moribund. Even from afar as a Jets fan it was hard not to notice him the last few years while watching games as they continually praise the guy. I really think this guy could be the strong disciplinarian, leader and motivator this organization sorely needs.
I read that Saleh was linebackers coach under Frank Bush, Jets interim DC, in Houston when Bush was DC. Maybe Bush keeps his job?
Was it just a comment made by someone or did it have a Jets source? I can’t find anything on it. Would love to see Smith be brought in.
Hahaha haven't had enough coffee yet. I thought that said Christopher Johnson is meeting Robert Saleh in prison in New Jersey today
let's see what could go wrong today...... broken fax broken printer delayed flight positive covid call from lions/eagles "assistant" for saleh while he is in with johnson claiming emergency. all sorts of things with the jets!
I’m glad they are doing their due diligence, can’t hire a guy without knowing who he wants to bring in on his staff. I’m sure Johnson is discussing financial compensation as well. I don’t see him being hired today, I can see Jets bringing in Arthur Smith for a second interview and going through the same process before making a final decision and offering either of them a job.
Wouldn't it be a total Jets thing to do by the entire FO testing positive and delaying the coaching search for 2 weeks?
