Yeah I think you could put together a decent conference starting with: Duke BC Wake Miami Syracuse UConn Pittsburgh Maybe some of the other schools in the ACC stick around and could add the quartet of bball only schools (Gtown, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Nova) to keep a market in DC, NY, NJ & Philly.
It's just a weird day for college sports. The rumors are all over the map. I can't remember a day like this where were hearing nonsensical rumors spread like they have credence ESPN is loving it. I think Maryland won't shake up the ACC as much as some people seem to think. For most schools 50 mil is a big nut to swallow, more so for state schools who have to explain it to the public. The BE however is not going to survive as we know it. The name may remain but that is about it. Uconn and Louisville are shitting bricks today not wanting to be the last one standing.
I just read that Rutgers was going to get about a 20 million dollar pay raise by going to the Big 10. Am I the only one that thinks this move is going to help build Rutgers into a national power? They will have the resources, they will have the fertile area to recruit and they should still be able to pull in the Florida kids. This extra money is really going to help transform the school.
I think Flood will be able to maintain. There seems to be a level of commitment that was never there and with resources being put into the program that were never there as well as now being able to take local products away from Penn St/Cuse/WVU they should be able to compete at a high level. Schiano built but I think Flood will keep them where they are. Honestly I just hope they beat Louisville... that would be awesome for all of us from Jersey who suffered through Terry Shea, Doug Graber and Dick Anderson. They were somewhat respectable until Anderson took over in the early 80's, Graber wasn't bad but Shea was absolutely awful.
I can't imagine they'd expand with a non football school. Without Maryland they at least have an even amount of teams for non football sports with Notre Dame aboard. There is a rumor floating around amongst some MWC fans that SDSU/Houston/SMU/Boise and BYU along with ESPN are looking to poach the MWC to form a conference based in the Midwest/West. The rumored teams are New Mexico UNLV UTEP Houston SMU Boise BYU SDSU Fresno Air Force Nevada Utah State For the most part you keep some traditional rivals and revieve some olf WAC ones. I don't know if I believe it but that would be one awesome basketball conference. UTEP with Tim Floyd is on the rise, Houston has potential, as does Fresno. Boise and Air Force will struggle but honestly I'd miss Wyoming and CSU. I also don't think Air Force would be on board. The rumor is Boise/BYU are working together and SDSU is acting like they have power when in reality they're just a pawn along for the ride.
Funny you mention ESPN, the guy who said SJU to the ACC is also saying ESPN is the one calling the shots. I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.
I think it is being by driven ESPN, it's no surprise that the conferences that spurned them are now being targeted by them. Both the BE and MWC walked away from their contracts and now ESPN is trying to rip them apart. I could care less as long as UNLV doesn't drop down a level.
Apparently Ian Fitzsimmons (he was the guy who had aTm to the SEC before anybody else) stated on ESPN radio that the ACC is about to get smashed, I guess K had it right when he said he was worried about the ACC..... Rumor and right now this is a Big Rumor but the Big10 is going hard after Virginia and GTech (surprised UNC is being passed over) , the SEC is going after VaTech and NC State and FSU/Clemson are in discussions with the Big 12. That could open the door to an ACC/Big East merger They truly want 4 conferences of 16... the question the PAC 12 doesn't really have any options as none of the MWC schools are appeaking to them for a variety of reasons. I think the only one that does is New Mexcio and their football isn't any sort of power but I think they would be a good choice for the Big12 or PAC.
I have to think there would be, which as an MWC guy I'd have to think that's a good deal. No way they would want SDSU and Boise. I could see them not really merging but taking whatever they want Cinci Louisville Temple USF Memphis UCF Uconn (that gets them back to 12) Catholic schools just come on as Olympic sports like they do in the BE... SDSU, Boise, Houston, SMU jettisoned and right to the MWC
I'm just worried about my team. We are finally back and we could get screwed into having a move to a bad conference.
I think the Catholic schools will be allright, they have options. The schools that should be worried are SDSU/Boise. Boise brings nothing to the table other then football and so with this new system in place the MWC doesn't really need them. SDSU brings even less then Boise. Word is there are quite a few presidents in the MWC ( I don't know which ones although my guess would be Wyoming, CSU and New Mexico) that don't want either back. I'd throw Temple in that mix as well. Worst case scenario is the Catholic Schools form their own conference, I don't know all the ramifications of doing that as the rules seem to change quite a bit but there is a foundation already in place. They also could add some better programs to get stronger. Dayton, Xavier, Creighton and SLU are all attractive options.
Columbia 75 - Villanova 57. Season over. Can we please fire Wright now? PLEASE? Can we please get a heads coach who will dedicate every minute of every game of every season towards winning an NCAA championship?
