Exactly... other than his reputation as a Defensive guru what has Rex done as HC that makes him any different than a Herm Edwards? Nothing.. He's not HC material.
Well, just as the great failure has not been his alone, the great success was not his alone, either. And yeah, he had two brilliant years in 2009 and 2010. Four great playoff wins and great memories that can never be tarnished. But, at the end of the day, he has had twice as many non-winning, non-playoff years as winning ones and his team has been a huge disappointment for four straight seasons now. Overall, he has a losing record. He's 16-31 in his last 47 games. And yet, people continue to make him out to be a victim and talk about him as if he's a perennial winner. He just isn't. He's had two winning seasons in six years and one of those was possibly the most fortunate 9-7 in league history. I just find it rather amusing to hear people confuse Rex having a great personality (I'm being awfully kind here) with Rex being a great coach.
You ought to stick to hockey because you obviously know little about football. I think that the 10 of you who voted to hire Rex as the DC after he is fired as HC should be permanently banned from following the Jets and from this site. That's THE most moronic post/suggestion I have EVER seen on a Jets board in over 12 years of posting on Jets fan sites.
I'm not so sure Rex won't get another HC job eventually. In fact, I think he probably will be a head coach again somewhere, and will probably be very successful once he escapes this mess. And if the new HC is smart, he will pay big bucks to hire Rex for the defense! (I doubt it will happen, but if the Jets were smart it would happen)
Rex will get another head coaching job.. I like him and feel he's been ok, probably will be better off taking a year off and allowing himself to resurface for an organization with a strong offense. Furthermore while this season has been a disaster., what rex has mastered is the art of the media. He has become a sympathetic figure and is perceived as a complete victim of idzik(while he is) he is partially responsible.. At this point everyone just feels bad for him and feel the jets have derailed yet another promising career. Go rex lol guys a genius. I expect him to get another shot and be very successful. He'll spend time learning the offense Will clean up off clock/ game managment skills Won't be loyal to a fault to players anymore. In true jet fashion. I expect him to win super bowlwith another organization in the next few years as the jets are still running in circles like they have been since I started watching them. 30 years ago....... Lol
I think we need to get over the Rex is a defensive genius mantra. I think the last 4 years have proved he is even over rated in that regard. He will most likely get another DC gig, but as of right now - I still highly doubt her gets another HC gig, unless he pulls off a Buddy Ryan '85 Bears type defense in his next DC stint.
Thanks for clarifying. My bad. I thought you meant popular which his players which he is because the inmates run the asylum.
This..... I think many people on this board have been asleep since about week 8 of Rex's rookie year as head coach. This D has been good but they've never been as good as people want to say they've been. They've never been elite or even close to elite. They've been good enough to win games when the offense was bad but they've also consistently given up 3rd downs, and maybe the most telling sign have an inability to not create turnovers. Once teams figured out his style which was about halfway through year one they have caught no one by surprise and Rex's adjustments have been let's just draft another defensive player in the 1st round. Think about this Kyle Wilson, Calvin Pryor, Quinton Coples, Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Dee Milliner,Demario Davis, Kenrick Ellis, David Harris and Calvin Pace were all top 100 picks Most of those guys are starters so you have to ask yourself what is the issue? Are they not being coached up, do they stink, are they overrated? If Rex is as great of defensive mind as people say with this many high round draft picks the D should be elite.
lol, talk about low standards - if you think Rex is getting hired as HC by another NFL team then you're saying he has what it takes to be a HC, so then why fire him at all? If in fact you don't think he's HC material, then the only possible valid argument you have for putting DC out of the question is that he's not a good defensive mind. Most of the league would disagree with you but that's ok because you're a self appointed football genius rofl Offer him the DC position, he may not be willing to eat his humble pie - I'd at least take the chance that he would. Love Rex, but not as head coach, and I respect the hell out of his defensive coaching abilities
Offering Rex Ryan the DC position would be a huge insult, and that's not what he deserves. Reasons why it is a terrible idea: 1) Rex might get another HC job right away. 2) Rex can earn +$4m per year as on-air talent, as opposed to, maybe 10% of that as a DC? He could still get another HC job after working in the media for awhile, although it wouldn't maximize his chances. 3) If he was looking to maximize his chances, he would rather go to a team with a better secondary. 4) How can we force the new HC to take Rex as his new DC? That's like asking your new wife to become best friends with your ex-wife. 5) It would be a distraction for the team, with divided loyalty between the new coach and Rex. If the team struggled, which it probably will at least initially, the media will start speculating about how the new HC could just be replaced with Rex. Keeping Rex may sound okay on paper, but Rex also has his own personal pride. When he's fired, he wants to continue his next chapter with his head held up high. He will not accept a demotion, especially not when the GM got him fired.
If we lived an idealistic world where people made smart decisions unconnected to personal awkwardness and feelings...then yes...Rex is an ideal DC candidate. But it wouldn't happen in a million years. Rex will be fired and he will leave for TV. The only time I could see Rex return to the Jets as a coach of any kind is if Woody Johnson sells the team...which ain't happening any time soon.
What are you talking about?? This is a great idea. I can't imagine why he would ever turn it down. It's not as if it's humiliating or anything like that. While we're at it, I think we should offer Scarlett Johansson and Beyonce spots on the Flight Crew ... and maybe Warren Buffet wants to head our accounting department. It can't hut to ask.
I don't think he's competent as a HC at any level. I think he's grossly overrated as a DC. In spite of all the #1 picks the Jets have spent on the D during his time here, his D has never been elite, they seldom have many 3 and outs, have problems getting off the field on 3rd down, get few turnovers, and have won few games for the team as Rex seems to want them to do. How many times have the Jets been blown out with his supposed great D mind? How many times has he failed to come up with a quality game plan or been able to make adjustments when things weren't working? How many times has his team lost following the bye? I think he is a one-trick pony. Once the rest of the NFL learned his scheme, his D hasn't been anywhere near as effective. His lack of leadership and discipline undermines whatever skills he brings to the table as a DC. Even more importantly, even if Rex were willing to stay on as DC, that's NOT the way things are done in the real world or professionally, but rather only in the Jets' bizarro world. No quality HC candidate would want to take the job with the former HC still with the team and serving as DC. There could be divided loyalties. It's a mind numbingly stupid suggestion to even consider.
