It's not a question of how good the player is, it's a question of investment level. If the Jets had picked Geno Smith on the 13 they'd be in an all-or-nothing situation with him over the next few years. Taking him on the 39 means that they have some options in terms of how they roll him out at this point. If he does bust somewhere down the road it isn't going to kill the franchise the way having a 1st round pick bust would. That's because the Jets got Sheldon Richardson with the 1st round pick and he's going to mitigate (or aggravate) the Geno Smith pick according to how he performs. If the Jets had taken Geno Smith on the 13 they'd have a lesser player taken on the 39 alongside him mitigating or aggravating the situation. I agree with you on the Tavon Austin/Geno Smith scenario. I think that was probably one of the main scenarios in play for the Jets on draft day.
Alex Smith was relevant because of Jim Harbaugh. When Kaep was ready he immediately kicked Smith to the curb. Alex Smith before Harbaugh was worse then Sanchez. Still a bad trade plus they weren't signing Revis to a 16m dollar deal
Can't really agree with that, Smith never threw more int's than td's in any season where he had more than 200 attempts, and even if you include those it's only 1 time. If anything in their first 4 years they were about equal. But smith took care of the ball better than Sanchez has ever taken care of it. albeit not by a lot. Smith even today is nothing but a safe passing game manager and not a game changer, which is why he got the boot in SFO.
smith also never won 4 playoff games or ever had the big play potential of Sanchez. it's a travesty to put sanchez and smith in the same sentence. Smith was savaged by the fans of his own team and one of the biggest bust in history of the game until Harbaugh rehabilitated him.
There's a reason why the 49ers were drafting #1 overall. Out of the early QB prospects as of late, Sanchez walked into the best situation. As Junc would say, look at the context. That 49ers team was absolutely horrible. Sure, Alex Smith contributed to the poor play, just like Sanchez did last year. Stop stating team stats to support Sanchez. They are the ONLY thing that Sanchez supporters can bring up at this point.

Should start him Week 1 and get the kinks out of the way... Your team isn't doing anything in 2013 anyway.
Sanchez has 2 pics in 2 games, one pic for 6 points and one pic in Redzone costing the team points..and that ridiculous end of half play where he cost the team 3 points,,,If Smith plays good tonight, doesn't turn ball over and scores some points he should be starter..All Sanchez has proved is he is still the same sorry Sanchez as last year.
Smith took a large # of sacks. Sure he didn't turn the football over, but he didn't make plays neither. At least Sanchez made plays. He had Norv Turner as his OC and still couldn't win the fans over.
