And why do you think it's the most important game preseason game? Really? So 1 game is going to make or break Gino's entire season? Glad your not the Jets HC, lol
I have the opposite feeling. I think if Geno puts up similar numbers to Sanchez' two preseason games, Geno gets the nod. The only way Sanchez keeps his job in that situation is if A) Geno has real trouble reading NFL blitz packages and/or B) Geno has problems getting plays from the sideline to the huddle to the line of scrimmage. Both of these have a high probability of occurring, so Sancho might get the nod. But if Geno has a smooth day with similar preseason numbers? Why not go with the real upside play?
That's right, just edit out the rest of my statement to make it sound like I'm a Gino hater. Don't even know the man.....I didn't like the draft pick, but he was worth the 2nd round gamble to the Jets org, so leave it at that. My bet is that he's got much to learn, and this is just one step in the learning curve process. Whether that equates to starting in game #1, I highly doubt it.
I get what you're saying, but I honestly believe that if Geno can play turnover free football against the Giants #1's that the staff wouldn't have a problem giving Geno the nod. Especially if he puts up the numbers that I mentioned in my previous post. They know what they have in Mark, they've got 4 years worth of proof of what Mark can bring to the table. Which is, at best, a decent game manager. He could have a breakout year with MM being our OC now, but I highly doubt it. IMO, give Geno a shot, he can't be worse than what we've had at QB the past 2 years.
When the decision is between the lesser of two evils, you wait till the very last second with the hope that one of the two will step up and make the decision for you by showing you something you can go with. So far neither QB has been convincing and it might go to the wire leaving the coaches scratching their heads. Seems to me that if the decision has been made already then as LTJF pointed out, why waste precious reps with the first team PARTICULARLY since Sanchez has not done much to instill sufficient confidence to the front office and coaching staff. That makes no sense. If Sanchez is the starter he certainly would benefit with as many reps as Geno with the starters Is much more likely that because the confidence level with Sanchez is not very high, they want to give Geno every chance to prove that he is ready enough to manage an NFL game. If not then enter Sanchez by default, but not before they have exhausted the possibility that Geno can play better than his limited snaps have shown so far. After Saturday we will see, it probably will not be good enough for Geno to unseat Sanchez that day, or next week, or the week after next, but the evaluation as to who starts will be regurgitated EVERY SINGLE WEEK of the season until one of them can demonstrate a much higher and consistent performance level. Clearly, it will be dependent on Sanchez ability to avoid critical mistakes and improved field awareness versus Geno's growth and demonstrated ability to manage the game. So far, I think the brass is between a rock and a hard spot...and so are we. If neither steps up their game by a bunch, watch out for the next draft, a QB is in the horizon with the first pick.
this is a qb competition, they need to see geno v the ones. its just gotta happen for them to properly evaluate him. with the turnovers sanchez hasnt secured his job so they need to give geno a shot cause he might pull it out from under sanchez if he isnt careful
I've never been more excited for a preseason game. Looking forward to see how Geno does. I've been impressed with his arm strength thusfar. Now I really want to see how he takes command of the offense.
Preseason game 3 is the only ps game they actually game plan for. it's historically the "dress rehearsal" for the season. I never said anything about game 1 make or breaking "Gino's" season. Why ask that? Rex IS the coach and you seem to disagree with him, even though you say he knows what he's doing?
Good stuff. If Geno shows he can play decently against a tough Giants defense, it could win him the job. The giants D is no Jacksonville, that's for sure. It's a great test of his ability and readiness to start in the season.
Look at it this way gents. The FO/CS already saw what Headband did against a rated NFL Defense when he played against Detroit. Now? They'll see what Geno can do against another rated NFL Defense AND how well the kid holds up under the pressure and the bright lights of the NY Tristate Area. If Geno is gonna be "The Guy", he has to show he can handle the scrutiny. Headband hasn't done all that well on National TV and for the most part, the FO/CS already knows what they have in him. There's a lot more to playing Qb in the NY Tristate than what goes on the stat sheet. There's a reason a lot of pretty decent professional atheletes can't play in the Tristate. They just don't have the mental make up to handle it. I don't think Sanchez, especially being a SoCal kid, handles it particularly well either. He is however the mea culpa all time tristate champion. We'll find out a lot on Saturday nite depending on how long Ryan leaves him in the game. If he left Sanchez in 3 qtrs against the mighty Jags, then Geno should expect to see nothing less barring injury or a complete meltdown.
If Geno does poorly on Saturday night Sanchez will be the second QB in. The interesting question is who is the second QB in if Geno plays well? McElroy has gotten just a few series so far in camp and made the most of them. The question is: will the Jets want to see him against the Giants pass rush?
In a semi related note: Antonio Allen is starting at the Giants as well. For a while Jarrett was on top of the tree but it looks like Allen might be favorable to win. He had 3 picks in practice today. If he picks off Eli it will be huge!
