He seems to miss games every year dating back to Alabama. I see a 2nd or a 3rd as a foundational piece of the team. Stud TE, Solid S, Solid WR, Solid LB, Solid OL, Stud RB are all options in the 2nd and 3rd. Having an “out” next year isn’t a selling point to me, I’d just think of the piece we threw out to have that 1 year. I’d much rather save a pick and $5mm/yr and bring OBJ home. He’s adapting to a similar offense in LA and imo his diva mo is overblown. Regardless of what JD does, I’ll get behind it 100%. I don’t pretend to have access to the type of information he does.
Danielle Hunter is a guy to look at in potential trade scenario. Vikings can’t really afford to keep him, so might be a value buy. Still only 27, he’s an explosive edge rusher and it’s hard to count on Lawson coming right back from Achilles.
This would be a great idea assuming we could grab him with a 2 or 3 OR get him in a package for Vikings to move up in the first for QB. He has a big, but very reasonable contract for his talents and would be as close to a sure thing we can get. It seems likely JD will be active in player trades but I wonder how big he's willing to go.
Cooper is due $22 million this season, and is due at least $20 million for the next two seasons. Even with no guaranteed money, it could actually be worse, as he could wind up a one-year rental, and rebuilding teams shouldn't be trading draft picks for one-year rentals of players. If we trade for him, he will be here for the remainder of his contract. The biggest reason I have for being against it is his contract would eat up a huge chunk of our cap space, and that would limit what JD could do in FA..I can't see JD giving a $22 million contact per season to any FA he signs. I'd rather have Burks or even Wilson, plus how many FAs JD could sign for that $22 mil per season as that would make the team better than just Cooper alone. I'd rather have Cooper than Ridley, that's for certain, and the idea of having a proven very good WR for Zach and the offense is definitely appealing. Still, I would hope that JD wouldn't give more than a 3rd for him, and since Dallas is over a barrel capwise, I'd rather pay less. If JD decides to go this route, I will root for him and hope that it works out.
History says FA is risky considering how Jets have been ripped off I would make some high upside conservative purchases and grow our homegrown and Draft talent Let's start with keeping Braxton B at a good price
Marcus Davenport from the Saints is someone who would intrigue me. Idk how the Saints fit this guy under their cap, but if he was ever on the market I would be interested. 9 sacks last year in only 11 games and is only 25.
I like him too but now that they hired their DC as the Head man, he'll probably want to keep Davenport and trade someone on offense
That is how Ozzie Newsome handled FA, and how I believe that JD would normally handle it. That said, the problem is that as I'm sure you've seen here, Jets fans are impatient, they are tired of losing, so they're screaming for JD to be aggressive in FA. They're criticizing him for not doing more in FA and saying that he has been awful in his handling of FA. The media is picking up on this. Saleh also may be asking JD for more help via FA to speed up the process so he won't look so bad as a HC. I'm certain that JD is feeling some increased pressure, even if it's just from within his own desires to see the team start winning and turning things around. He's had bad luck with all the injuries, and Davis having one of the worst, if not THE worst year of his career in terms of dropped passes and then getting injured. Lawson missing all of last year was devastating. After what happened with Lawson and Davis, it could have made JD even more conservative in FA, but he has said that he will be more aggressive, and I think he will probably be more aggressive than normal. He will overpay for a big name FA or two to get them to come here. He really has no choice as we still have so many holes, that by just using the draft alone, it could take another 2-3 drafts for us to even become competitive. Even the Johnsons aren't going to wait that long for a winner. With the black hole that our TE position group is and with the potential number and quality of TEs who could hit FA, he almost certainly will sign a TE, maybe even two if they're second tier. I think he will also be looking hard at RG, WR, S, Edge, DT, CB, LB position groups, and maybe even the RB and all OL position groups to upgrade depth.
How often do trade backs including players actually occur? The idea of swapping first rounders with Atlanta while also getting Calvin Ridley sounds great, but are these kinds of trades even remotely realistic? I wouldnt mind trading a second for Ridley or Hunter. Although, probably not both.
Personally I would rather just give out money to Adams or Gallup. I dont trust Ridley right now after he walked away for mental health reasons
Bengals did it a couple years ago. They traded back in the first round with Buffalo to get Cordy Glenn LT. Bills used that pick in their pursuit of Josh Allen. Then of course there was the Browns moving down with our Jets (and a few players) for Mark Sanchez. mid rounds of course, but 49ers acquired Trent Williams from the Redskins in a 3rd round trade down. Something our stupid Jets shoulda been all over. There might be more but that's what I can think of now, so it does happen
The appealing part of Cooper is the lack of guaranteed money left on his deal. He produces but he also disappears for stretches at points in each season but couples that with a couple massive games. Could be a variety of reasons but Aikman & Buck usually do the Cowboy games and they’ve pointed out several times where Cooper is nowhere to be found and often checking himself out of the game.
Mostly agree with everything you said ..But the Rams are in the SB and they purchased players like Vonn Miller and Jaylen Ramsey. Can the Jets ever get so lucky ?.?
Dude had 26 TDs in his first three years. Averaged over 1k yards per year, was on track for 955 yards this year before getting injured… are you finding this in the second round this year? Probably not. The issue is everything other than what he does on the field.
My wife and in laws are diehard Cowboys fans. I’m usually there for every game if the Jets aren’t playing at the same time. They love Coop but the amount of times I heard “why is he not in the game?!”… That being said, he’s still a high level WR that had no guaranteed money left. I’d trade a day 2 pick and convert some of that money into a bonus so the cap number is lowered, maybe spread it out into next year as well.
Luck never seems to be on the Jets' side, but then again, luck is thought to be the result of preparation and opportunity. Rarely have the Jets been "prepared." Yes, the Rams are in the SB, and one can make successful big FA additions. Hopefully, Lawson will be healthy and be the pass rushing terror this year that JD envisioned, and Davis will stay healthy and stop dropping passes. If so, the Jets should be appreciably better. One thing about the Rams however...they traded away most of their early draft capital for this year and next year. If they don't win, it's not gonna be good.
Here are some less bold predictions. 1. Using the 1st three picks the Jets will take an edge rusher, OL and WR with three of the 4 picks. 2. The 4th pick will either be a safety or TE. From the rumors the Jets seem to be prioritizing OL, DL, safety and WR in this draft. I would love to see them add Muma in the third or Strange in the 4th and two TEs. I can't wait to see what the Jets do with their picks. I am sure they want to trade back. I just doubt there are many wanting to trade up. Round two and late round one seems to be where the value is in this draft. I would love to se us trade back and accumulate picks for guys like Zion Johnson and Wrs like Dotson, jameson Williams, Metchie and Wan'dale, along with a very strong TE class.
