I see Boston going after both Holliday and Mauer. Halladay or Ramirez too. They saved money this year when Teixiera came here and they have a need for all of them.
Not that I follow the situation, but I can't believe Mauer would want to leave the Twins. He's from Minnesota after all. Hopefully the Cards will resign Holliday. Ramirez will never go back. Halladay to Boston would be great, they'd have to give up everything to get him. Yanks would only have to deal with him 3 or 4 times a year. I'll take that.
Of course Mauer would pick Minny if he had his choice. However his free agent contract in '11 will be one of the largest in baseball history and almost as big as the entire Twins current payroll so him staying home isn't really feasible.
The Twins can only keep one of Mauer and Morneau. They've known that day is coming for a long time now. I'd definitely keep Mauer over Morneau, but it would cost a lot and the Twins would suffer for it. No way we keep Melky and Gardner if Jackson is ready. Swisher is our right fielder for the near future. That leaves center, and possibly left, depending on Damon's future and the possibility of Jeter moving there. I wouldn't want Halladay in Boston. It's not just the 3 or 4 times we'd face him in the regular season. It's the almost sure-thing 20 wins. It's also the twice we'd see him in the playoffs. Halladay in Boston is dangerous to the Yankees. A 1-2 of Halladay and Beckett is sick. ------------ As far as the game, nice job by CC defending ARod. Sucks that Suzuki got quick revenge, but at least our pitchers are done letting our guys get hit. Good job by the ump to allow it to happen, then warn both benches. I just wish we could score with the bases loaded.
Mauer is at a Lebron like status where he is so young, and so good, that his first free agent deal will be unprecedented... He's going to be 27 when he hits free agency and the bidding war will be unprecedented if he makes it to free agency. Sure he likes Minnesota but I'm not sure they have the ability to even pay him as a top 5 player but not a record deal. He could easily change his mind and decide he wants to play for a big market team .The Sox and Yankees both need a replacement catcher badly within the next few years. He's only 26 but he's putting up one of the best offensive seasons by a catcher ever. As long as he stays healthy, he already seems to have a great chance of being a HOF guy, maybe even the best catcher of all time. First 300 million dollar player?
Still don't understand why this thread was titled No Yanks @ A's. Nice W. Sabathia is a machine I thought he could have gone the distance tonight.
I said Ramirez but was thinking of Felix Hernandez when I did. I know they have had great interest in him for awhile now.
Carl Pohlad, Minnesota's owner, is a billionaire and actually one of the richest owners in all of baseball. He's notoriously frugal when it comes to the Twinkies, but he would be crucified if he let Mauer go because he was too cheap--Mauer is a local hero on a Jeter level, maybe even moreso. He'll pony up the cash when the time comes.
