Not ones drafted in the top 15. Go through and look at every draft since 2000 and show me who? You're ignoring the numbers I presented for the third time.
I get it the Jets do not support young QBs. They dumped Sam why would they not dump Zach for the next shiny toy. The schtick is really getting old. We get it.
The thing that really bothers me is the method that the Jets use over and over again. They take the second QB in the draft - usually promoting him above the slot he would normally go in (Darnold may be an exception here because he had multiple years at USC that had set him up to be either #1 or #2 QB in his class.) They throw him on the field early with limited actual experience running the offense. He does well in his first game or two before the NFL gets film on him and then he flops hard and is in recovery mode by mid-season desperately trying to catch up to the NFL. Sometimes the Jets setup a belated rookie bubble. Most of the time they just let the young guy face surf over concrete for a lot of his first year. By year #2 the fans aren't defending him as much By year #3 he is burnt toast. It's just very, very old and that's why I just skipped to year #3 this time. I don't need to see all the failures on the field this time around. I know they're out there and will happen. It's just a matter of time.
I mean, the hope is that the Jets do what the Bills did with Josh Allen and improve the team around him each and every year so that the player can grow as the organization gets better. And that means specifically improving the positions that directly support the quarterback. No, the Jets have not done that. But that's the idea at least. The Jets just abandoned that idea with Darnold when they went and got a runningback who hasn't played in two years and a middle linebacker as their big time free agent signings while patching the offensive line with mediocre veterans and long shot draft picks.
I think the most promising thing is that JD has already done the bolded more than any GM we've had recently. He's drafted an OL and a WR in the first 2 rounds each year he's been the GM. Jury's still out on how those guys pan out but it's obvious that JD has a plan on how to put Zach in the best situation possible for him to succeed. I also think JD is smart enough to know that there's still more that could be done to help Zach and this offense. Even after the JFM deal, we'll have roughly 50M in cap space and 4 top 50ish picks in the 2022 draft and I would expect most of those assets to go towards helping this offense.
What happened with Darnold has nothing to do with the current situation and Wilson. JD didn't draft Darnold or set the stategy for his development. He wasn't the one who failed to surround him with play makers his first 2 years. The notion that Douglas is going to do the same to Wilson as Mac did to Darnold just because he works for the Jets is asinine. Brad is just blind to Wilson and his potential. The guy has a ton of talent and made some great throws last week. But in his mind that was because there isn't enough tape on him yet and once there is he will an absolute disaster. Clown shoes.
Wilson is completing 56.8% of his passes with a 5.8% Int% and a 10% sack rate on his 155 drop backs. The complete disaster is already here but all you see is a few good throws. Sam Darnold was *really* good at running around for 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage and delivering an on-target dart into the end zone. There's more to being a good QB in the NFL than being able to do that. Zach Wilson throws a really pretty ball up the left sideline. He did that in college also. There's more to being a good QB in the NFL than being able to make that throw.
You don't think you're jumping the gun a bit calling someone a complete disaster 4 games into their professional career? Especially coming off of his best performance so far, in a week where he wins Rookie of the Week? We all know Zach isn't perfect and he's struggled mightily so far this season, with the exception of 2 halves, but I don't see how anyone could have such a definitive stance on any prospect so early into their career. Did you think he would come in and light it up like Herbert? If so, maybe some of this is on you. Sure, I hoped he would play that well but I knew this season would be full of ups and downs, as is the case for most rookie QB's.
Playing the kid early has nothing to do with it IMHO. It will ultimately depend on how they build around him and Zach himself. It is tough to be a FQB in this league that can actually elevate a team. The problem is the Jets keep looking for the savior instead of building a team. This time looks different toe, but only time will tell. You are correct a QB has three years to show his worth and that is because the big second contract. It takes more than 4 games
Ugh…Every difference of opinion is trolling for some of you guys. I disagree with Brad here but he’s not trolling. Grow the fuck up. SMH
I would re-word that to say, "I get it. The Jets did not support their young QBs in the past, but that has changed." JD added AVT, Davis, Cole, Carter, Coleman, Kroft, and Moses this offseason as well as improved the D so Zach would have more chances. He also kept Crowder, whom he could have traded, and got rid of that waste of a roster spot at TE by trading him to the Vikings. He added Becton, Mims, Fant, McGovern, and GVR last season, as well as Mann, which should help with field position to make it easier on Zach. I believe that he will continue to build around Zach adding a TE or two, a RG, a FB, and maybe another WR, C, and RB in the next offseason. They are not dumping Zach.
Agreed. His posts are the height of irrationality. The "Jets" haven't done anything. One could claim that the "Jets" have done those things if we had owners like Jerry Jones that dictated to the GM and HC what to do, or if we had a long-term GM or President of Football Operations who set the plan and strategy. We don't have those things, nor have we had those things. What we have had is a succession of incompetent hires at GM and HC who did those things. None of those incompetent hires are still with the team, so it is inaccurate, irrational, and assinine to claim that the Jets have done and will do the same things again. Everyone just needs to put that clown on ignore and quit responding to him. He's not going to learn or stop.
You can have above average arm talent and still end up mediocre. The occasional special throws Zach makes speaks to his talent & potential not his overall play which can be fairly described as mediocre or worse depending on how rosy the tint is on your glasses.
The question is can Zach have more good games than bad. Right now, he has more of the latter, but it's been 4 games.
From the little I’ve seen it of next year’s class, I don’t think any of them are better than Wilson. So I don’t see a Kyler Murray situation on the horizon regardless of how Wilson plays. You’re stuck my guy.
Retweet. Brad's been here for nearly a decade longer than most of the people disagreeing with him. If he was subject to long bouts of trolling he wouldn't be here.
My guess is he and the team will have many more bad games than good. That is part of the process. The question is how fast can he and the team develop and where will be come December. You can see growth in every game. I really love a lot of the things we saw last week particularly that LaFluer was on some plays allowing Zach to audible out of bad plays. There is one video which highlights Zach audibling out of run play into a stacked box to pass for a first down. There were some hiccups on the play where one of the WRs (I believe Cole) didn't seem to understand the play got changed. But, things like this are really exciting for the future.
