A year ago after 40 games we were 18-22 and 10 games out, today we are 19-21 and 5 games out(only 3 behind Boston who is in 2nd place and who I think will ultimtaely win the division).

Exactly what I said a few posts ago. The only reason we aren't 10 out is that Boston sucks as much as we do. At least we have some light at the end of the tunnel with Arod and Posada. What do they have? I still think we can win the division if we get together at some point this year.

Pretty remarkable that it is this early in the season and there is only one team in baseball with a winning percentage over .600 and that's Arizona.

So every season breaks the same way?

ok. noone else thinks Jeter is turning to shit right before our eyes.....lets give it a couple more months. I guess hes always ben strictly a singles hitter.....I guess his defense has always been this bad. Its plain as day that he is diminishing steadily. And the slide will continue. And this will be a long, long season.....as a very wise man has said quite a few times this year already

Jeter's got 3 triples already this year. He had 3 all of last year. He had 4 the year before. 5 the year before that. He's never had more than 9. Yup. He's definitely slowing up.

Yeah, his numbers are down right now, but the whole team's is. Let's talk about his offensive ability sometime in late June, after ARod is back in the lineup for a while.

As for his fielding, it's no better or worse than usual. The difference being that rather than Boggs, Broscius, or ARod playing next to him, he's got Ensburg and Betemit. Also, rather than Mienkiewicz, or Phillips at first, he's got Giambi.

So no, I don't think Jeter is "turning to shit" right before my eyes.

Jeter was supposed to be done when he hit .168 in April 2004, too.

I think I'll wait a little longer before proclaiming a player who's off to a slow start (with a .305 AVG) as someone who's "turning to shit".

    Odd timing for that comment.

Cano had a seven-game hitting streak going into last night. And minus the pop-out in the fifth, he hit the ball hard last night. Unfortunately, it was right at people.

ETA: I think I'm going to take a break from the negativity for awhile. It's harshin' my buzz. It's a beautiful day outside... I think I'll go enjoy that instead.

Haha..and for once I'm not being negative. I still think we can win the division. In fact I think we have a much better chance than we did at this time last year.

Just don't ask me what I think about the pitching or that will change my opinion altogether.

My point was the whole season he has been ice cold. He isn't even hitting .200.

I don't get it. Our pitching has been our strong point so far. Why would it force you to change your opinion to a more negative one?

Now I could see if you have questions about the future, with the young guns, but right now? Moose is pitching some of his best work since he first put on pinstripes. Pettitte is good most of the time (sure he's had a couple bad days, but everyone does). Wang has been simply phenominal. Rasner, while it's only been 2 games, has been fantastic. Hopefully, Kennedy will be who he is supposed to be, but he's still the #5 guy right now.

The pen has been lights out. When our starters go through 6, it's pretty well assured we're not giving up too many runs.

The problem is that we just can't score.

Getting back to Jeter, I hear this Gonzalez rookie is pretty slick with the glove. I haven't seen him, but assuming its true and further that he can hit enough to stick, that could ultimately make Jeter the third best SS on the team. Sooner or later someone in AAA is going to come along, anyway.

Can anyone else envision him moving to the outfield next season? First base? Or does he own shortstop for as long as he's here based on past success?

Obviously his bat is staying in the lineup. Gonzalez looks nice with the glove, but I'm not ready to proclaim him an All-Star SS yet.

Personally, I would have moved Jeter to the outfield when ARod came to town to begin with. However, as it was then, this is "Jeter's" club. I can't see Girardi moving him.

Gonzalez hits like Molina anyway. He'll get hits, but he's not making a case to take away the starter's job.

hitting streaks can be quite deceiving. he can go 1 for 4 every day and have a 162 game hitting streak. hed still be a .250 hitter.

Hank's pissed off. Amazingly, I think he's absolutely right with everything here:

This team better get its act together.

Anyone notice Girardi looks like crap lately? He looks like he's lost both weight and sleep. He's definitely not happy with the way things are going. He almost looks disgusted when guys K.

This is the same tiring bullshit year after year. Yankees play like shit,a Steinbrenner gets on the throne and speaks and it makes headlines. WHy does this team even need that shit to start playing? If i worked half ass the last month like they do my business would go under. Pathetic shit, just pathetic.

Wang has pitched great all year. He deserves an even better record than he has. Mussina has been good in his last few starts but I don't expect it to last although he is in a contract year and we all know how that works. Rasner has been great in 2 starts but nobody really knows him yet. Pettitte gets me sea sick and the other bums are just that. We are still a starter or maybe 2 away from having a chance in the post season. The way we are hitting now is what you expect in the post season when you are going up against the best pitchers in the game. The results speak for themselves.

Well, the only game Wang didn't win that he should have was last night. Against Lee, he was just outpitched, and that's really saying something.

Moose is pitching good because he's pitching smarter. I don't believe in the fallacy of the contract year.

Rasner pitched well last year as well. He's been better in these two starts, but he's not exactly a poor pitcher.

Pettitte is what he is, a guy on the tail end of his career, just trying to help us while he's got something left.

    HOLY SHIT JETER! Nice play!!!
