I thought it was a good call. Leak was going to throw it, but decided not to and the defender knocked the ball loose. I don't know what the college rulebook says about plays like that. But in my opinion, the play was a fumble.
I really didnt think the guy touched the ball, Im not trying to sound like a bitter fan or whatever cause the playcalling was horrible, but I just think that one play was stupid. I mean his arm was clearly coming forward and even though it was challenged i dont even know if the refs looked at it. On a side note the gators shouldnt have needed to use their challenge on the play, it should have been challenged by the replay official, it woulda saved them a timeout. But like I said terrible coaching job.
now its time to pray for rain one of the next two nights, there's at least a possibility of a rainout. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/zones/MOZ063.php?zo=1&city=St.+Louis+County
Well I just finished watching the game and Trashel is the most gutless pitcher that I've ever seen period.
I am beginnning to see a pattern here. Winning a relatively easy game 1, blowing a lead and losing a tough game 2, bats fall asleep and getting shutout by a mediocre pitcher in game 3. Does the team flat out quit in game 4? We shall see. Lucky for the Mets offense, they get Anthony Reyes tonight and not Jeremy Bonderman.
I was thinking the same thing...its almost exactly the same....especially game 2, have the lead, all of a sudden lose it and then you cant score anymore....very strange
Except they couldn't hit Game 1 either. Every pitcher in this series has pretty much completely shut down the Mets with the exception of Mr Cy Young.
And not that Met fans should be thinking of the World Series right now, but hey I'm not a Mets fan, but if you're having this many problems against Cardinals pitching, I'd be scared shitless of the Tigers pitching right now. If Leyland is smart, which he is, he's making sure Rogers and Robertson get two starts each. Throw Verlander into the mix and DAY-UM! You've got some trouble.
To me this problem with the Mets came about around the trade deadline, we trade away a decent OF in Nady for garbage. Yes Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez are garbage. We knew Floyd was hurt and but we failed to get a replacement, and his replacement at the time did not play that bad yet due to numbers was left off the postseason roster. Yes it was a panic move by Omar after Sanchez was lost for the season but still a bad move. We then trade for Shawn Green, why I don't know? He's been washed up for 2 years but who knows a vet looking for a ring might play good ball when called upon. I don't dislike the move but it clearly has backfired as Green has been invisible and oh yeah misplayed that triple by Spiezio. Mota, this was a move that was questioned from day 1. Why the Mets would make a move for this guy is beyond belief. Our BP was fine as Feliciano, Ring and Heilman were fine down the stretch and throw in garbage like Hernandez and there was no need for another guy that throws a fastball that gets crushed on a cosistent basis. Mota had one good half season in his career and has donen nothing since. IMO the Mets front office was exposed and the team is paying for the moves they didn't make and the bad moves they did. They failed to secure another SP knowing full well it was possible Pedro would be hurt. I'm not saying we should have traded for Zito but at least do better than Perez. They also failed to get another bat in the lineup and due to the injury by Floyd it hurts. You can't expect Endy Chavez to go out and be Cliff Floyd, it's not fair and unrealistic. IMO the Mets are losing now because of what they failed to due in July.
How has the Green move backfired exactly? He was one of our best hitters in the LDS, been par for the rest of the crappy LCS lineup, and even though he couldn't make the catch on the Spezio play he still kept it in the ballpark. Questioning the Mota deal is borederline retarded. We gave up NOTHING for the guy and he was untouchable down the stretch. It was a great trade. The Mets are losing now because El Duques calf exploded the day before the playoffs.
We all like to make blanket statements, of course, but I have to lean more towards your explanation than others. Certainly losing Duque was devastating (I don't count Pedro, of course - only the idiots in the media were apparently counting on him). I do not blame Omar for the Nady trade - the fact is, at that point in the season, you could have made the argument that Sanchez had been the most important pitcher on the team. Anyone who is claiming that they foresaw that Heilman would suddenly pitch great after three months of complete incompetence is, I believe, being less than truthful, and if he hadn't, who knows how the season would have ended? You can certainly blame Omar for not getting Zito, but I won't, since I was vocal at the time supporting not trading Milledge for him (if I was wrong about it, it's not too fair for me to criticize Omar for it). The tough break for the Mets was that they apparently could have gotten Oswalt for him, if not for DeAngelos inexplicably holding on to Tejada. I'm not sure who else there was who was available who would have made such a difference. Ultimately, I keep coming back to the belief that this team just wasn't as good as they seemed to be during the season (because of the weakness of the NL), and they are unlucky enough to have those weaknesses exposed at the wrong time. That doesn't mean that the series is over, but I still feel that anyone who is shocked by what has happened the past two games didn't have very realistic expectations - counting on Maine and Trachsel for big postseason wins was asking a lot. I also have high hopes for next year, as I think many topnotch building blocks are already in place (Delgado, Reyes, Wright, Lo Duca, Beltran, Chavez, most of the bullpen), and I think Glavine can be a fine #2-#3 starter. The Mets clearly need one or two people for the top of the rotation, a second baseman, and a corner outfielder, and have plenty of money to go get them.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
the problem wasn't the acquisition of mota, which as others have pointed out was a fantastic movie, but rather willie's elevation of him to supreme god of the bullpen over guys that have been getting big outs for the mets all season. green has been awful defensively this series, he's cost us 4 runs and not contributed anything back on offense by my count, which puts him as probably the LVP in this series except for trachsel.
detroit's really going to have an advantage, even if we can win this series. They'll be able to go with a normal and rested rotation.
At this point, just having a rotation is an advantage over us. Let's hope our bats carry us tonight! Turkey Up!!!
I have a really good feeling that Oliver Perez is going to be pumped up and go out and throw the best game of his career. but just in case, turkey up people
Willie: "When [Oliver Perez] is in a nice little groove, he throws the ball real well." Yeah Willie, you could say that about any pitcher.
See, I'm worried that Perez will be pumped up, and will have no command. This isn't a guy who needs an extra jump to improve his stuff - this is a guy who needs more focus to improve his command.
