    Taken from today's NJ.com:

So, my question becomes what are we paying Thurman for? If Rex is the DC, then Thurman is the Assistant DC? Nice to know Rex will understand the WCO too by the time the season begins although I'm really hoping Sanchez understands it better.

Sounds almost like Rex is going back to what he did with Schotty by giving him free reign. Maybe MM will have more success than Schotty did, maybe he won't but in the end, it still belongs to Rex as even though he's actually the DC, his title still reads Head Coach and the buck should stop there.

Helluva way to do things. Maybe Rex is a trendsetter?

Fixed it for you. I have no problem with Rex being more involved. Marty is a much more efficient OC than either Schotty or Sparano. I'd have no problem with him having full control over it (which is what a lot of people on this board was saying).

I'm confused. I thought there were reports of this happening last season, although maybe I am just remembering wrong.

to be fair morningwood didnt have a ton of control over the offense in his last job. while we must wait to see if the lack of running the ball was fat andy or morningwoods fault we also must wonder if the wood can run an offense all by himself at this point.

I guess with new faces, he wanted to establish the foundation before he handed the defense to Thurman entirely. Nothing wrong with that approach. Hey, this approach got us to 2 AFCCG's right?

I've always wondered what Rex did considering he knows nothing about offense and supposedly pettine called the defensive plays the past couple of seasons.

I bet a lot of HCs devote more time to the side they specialized in. This is a good thing to hear, RR calling the D is a good thing.

  14. Most head coaches specialize on one side of the ball. They have to maintain a big picture perspective but you'd like to think they have some grasp of x's & o's in some capacity.

Not sure why people are making a big deal about Dennis Thurman's role. There are so many responsibilities that go into running a defense(Self scouting/opponent scouting/whiteboard/player relations/classroom etc) He will be Rex's second set of eyes like he has been in the past.

I do wish Rex would stick to one method but can't blame the guy for making adjustments to try to better the team. Let's hope this leads to more wins.

I agree that many head coaches"favor" their side of the ball. The problem with Rex is that he appears to have no interest in the offensive side of the ball. Rex only wants to spout off where his defense ranks not his TEAM.The problem for Rex it is unlikely Idzik is buying what Rex is selling.

that and guys usually try to do more with less on the side that is there specialty. rex is the opposite of that. he puts everything into the defense and really just doesnt give a fuck about the offense.

Nothing wrong with this. Rex will simply set the strategy for the D and the type of defense he wants. Thurman will get it implemented and do the day to day coaching. there is plenty more for the HC to do that the defensive details.

    Perfect.

This is where Rex is at his best...which leaves Thurman to, well, coordinate his wishes.

I am also much more confident in MM running the O than any of the previous trash Rex has been saddled with.

How do you know this? He said he'll know everything that's going on with the offense.

What's new? It has been this way since 2009. Rex is Head DC.
