I think the perception that they might take Geno Smith on the 9 is the one that most benefits the Jets going into the draft. It makes their pick a key pick from the perspective of other teams. It increases the chances of two QB's going before the 9 and that would push some value down to the Jets. It increases the chances that somebody who wants Smith will trade for the pick when the Jets are on the clock.
Would we not want to wait for 2014 instead of taking Smith this year......He's not the ultimate answer......Go oline for example and QB next year.....
Hasselbeck anyone? I'm not a huge fan but thought I would get a feel for him. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/18/matt-hasselbeck-out-in-tennessee/
Depends on who else is there with him. I agree, I don't see him being there especially if the Jets keep on floating information that they are interested in him
if Smith is there you take him because you cant assume we'll get a stud in 2014 teams that wont go QB next year in the 1st round Patriots Dolphins Steelers Ravens Bengals Broncos Chiefs Colts Giants Redskins Packers Lions Seahawks 49ers Rams Saints Panthers Falcons teams likely drafting behind us who may go QB Texans Cowboys Chargers Titans Eagles Bears Vikings teams who will go QB within the next 2 years Browns Raiders Cardinals Bills Buccaneers Jaguars when you see a QB you take him Dolphins with Tannehill Bengals with Dalton Vikings with Ponder so if Geno is there at 9 we gotta take him
The thing that concerns is Andy Reid up in KC. They have the #1 pick in this draft, and yet, Reid chose Alex Smith over Geno Smith. Reid is known for developing QB's, and he chose to pass on Smith. Raises some red flags for me.
seriously though, this isn't a big deal. "oh look! the jets are scouting the top quarterback prospect in the draft! what will those clowns do next?"
I think Alex Smith just seemed more valuable as he got him for a #2 and he can now either use the #1 on another player or trade back and get more picks to build them into a contender The Chiefs are likely going to go into camp as the #2 team in the AFC West so adding either a Floyd or Star or Joeckel or Fisher along with a somewhat proven Alex Smith and team already having Bowe, Charles, Houston, Berry, Flowers and other role players puts them a better position I think Reid trades out of the #1 spot to be honest with who, IDK
QB breaks a lot of rules on value. I don't see anybody in this draft at QB who I think is a top 3 pick but I think from pick 4 on if you need a QB there's an argument for taking the guy on the top of *your* chart, whoever that is. You go nowhere in the NFL without a quality QB and waiting until next year just gets you to next year with no guarantee you'll be any happier about your options. Would drafting Teddy Bridgewater next year be preferable to taking any of the guys this year? Of course it would. The Jets have maybe a 10% chance of getting their hands on Bridgewater next year and that's probably too optimistic by a lot.
Enough of the Teddy Bridgewater nonsense, the guy is nowhere near as good as people are making him out to be
Is there anything besides level of competition you don't like about his game? I'm not being critical, I'm just curious. I really don't see any major flaws in his game.
Most mocks are stating the opposite. There are some really desperate QB teams drafting in front of the Jets. Bills & Cardinals are looking like possibilities for Geno.
I can almost guarantee you Buffalo will grab him. They have no QB right now. Unless they make a FA move, they are taking Geno Smith. In my opinion, this is why they let Fitzpatrick go.
Picking a QB early isnt the big risk it was several years ago... You may miss out on a first round draft pick but your not strapped to a large contract like sanchez has.
Some of you guys are extremely obnoxious declaring people busts before they even step on the football field. Give the kids a chance before you wrote them off. You're all obsessed with the notion of getting an elite quarter. It's hard to find them, that's why there are only a few elites. If geno fell to us at 9 it would be a great pick
It's still a big risk to take a QB early. You have to go all-in with the guy and that means likely at least three seasons of doing major work to get him rolling. Every season that he doesn't ignite causes the organization to have to double-down on an increasingly risky bet. And if you don't get lift-off then you have no moon shot until you've wiped the program clean and started all over again with the same type of risk. The QB decision basically drives the entire organization for each cycle until you're got a good one in place. If you focus on other things to build a base to install a QB on you run the real risk of never finding your QB and having everything you've done crumble. The Colts had the 1 pick with Peyton. The Pats got lucky with Brady. The Steelers found a rare QB in Roethlisberger who can function without a good line. The Giants traded for the 1 pick QB with Eli. The Saints got Brees off an injury and brain fart by his team. The Packers had a Hall of Fame QB and the luxury to warehouse Rodgers. Right now the odds say the Jets will not find a franchise QB in the next 5 years. Most teams don't get a guy good enough to put them over the top when they go looking. In that light you have to be looking for the QB all the time, every day, under every rock, until you've found him. The Jets don't have the luxury of saying "this is a crappy draft class, we're waiting for next year." They need to draft a QB this year that they think represents at least the possibility that he's the one. They don't have to do this on the 9 or the 39 but they must do this before the end of the draft.
