Three points: 1. We're past the bulk of free agency right now. So there are not likely to be people out there to come in and stand up at various positions except for the odd June 1st cut. 2. Signing a free agent to come in and play on the offensive line in case of an injury is probably not an effective proposition anyway. You want to have a few people you drafted over the previous drafts that might be able to step up and play if needed, not a 6th offensive lineman who is going to sit while getting paid nearly a starter's salary. If a guy is out there in free agency and not a starter he often can't be a starter or his previous team would have re-signed him. Signing him to backup leaves you with a hole in the event he needs to fulfill a much larger role than that due to injury. Your own backups may or may not be able to take the job with some seasoning but other people's discarded backups probably can't. 3. It's much more expensive to use free agency to fill holes because you're paying a premium for players when you do this regularly. A guard drafted 4 years ago and now able to play LG for us would be much cheaper than paying top dollar for the decline phase of Alan Faneca's career. Free agency has it's place in the system but that place is very over-rated if it's relied on as a main source of talent as opposed to just filling in a hole here or there or alternately going and getting some other team's error in judgment in terms of who they were willing to let hit the market.
I remember watching him tear up Penn State in their only loss of the regular season. Penn State (and most other Big 10 teams) had a top notch defense that held Beanie Wells to 2.5 yards a carry and he ran right over and through them. He's a real bruiser in the mold of Brandon Jacobs who can contribute immediately and fits Rex's "ground and pound" running attack perfectly.
Marques Douglas started at least 15 games every year for a long time before last season, so he should be a solid fill in as well.
I think somebody posted an article that said Douglass is 3rd in the league in tackles for loss since like 02 or something. He's a solid player. Only problem is there is no depth behind him
The Jets had him on their wish list. The Jets probably got wind of another team planning on picking him, prior to the 3rd round taking place. They didn't want to let him go, so they pulled the trigger. It's probably as simple as that.
