To change a rule in less than a week is foolish. Referees usually have the off season to go over changes. Coaches work these new rules in during training camp. This is PR spin and finger pointing at it's finest.
i've seen more completions and runs after catches today that last week would have been incomplete due to a player hitting them during the catch or tackled at the spot of the catch due to players not hitting the reciever during the catch. Welcome to the National Flag Football league folks.
I have a really hard time believing this. So you're saying, because helmet to helmet hits have a higher penalty, the defensive players decided not to even try legal tackling?
Did anyone catch the clip of James Harrison completely letting up on a tackle he should have made on NBC before the Vikings-Pack game? I find this upsetting and counterintuitive to the idea of football when the league makes a knee-jerk reaction to appease the media, and it affects how the players actually play the game. It's a violent game. Players will get hurt. By no means should players be allowed to intentionally injure their opponents, but at the same time, when I see one of the best defensive players in the league choose not to tackle someone because of the NFL's ill-informed crackdown on "devastating hits," I start to understand how a player of Harrison's stature could entertain the idea of retiring.
Another Steeler already had the Dolphin in the grasp. Harrison definitely could have helped make 100% sure that the tackle would have been made by making a legal tackle. Harrison absolutely did not have to make a "devastating hit" to help make sure the Dolphin was tackled there.
Wanted to pat myself on the back here. New helmet design that has 5 individual plates cushioned against an inner shell. Helps reduce concussions. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/110113_bulwark_football_helmets
