Not as long as Buffalo's playoff drought actually. In reality though, adding 2 playoff spots wouldn't have helped. Buffalo hasn't finished higher than 9th (2004) in the AFC since they last made the playoffs. So you guys would be on what? a 14? or 15? year drought either way...
The idea is a big fat pile of shit motivated by nothing other than greed....... maybe they can continue to water down the product a little more, so the regular season barely means anything, and it'll be like the NBA & NHL where it's a bigger deal to NOT make the playoffs than it is to get in.
This is a terrible idea, it makes the regular season less important and in the AFC's case it would have rewarded mediocrity. I like the playoff system the way it is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. You gotta win more than 6 games for that, even with expanded playoffs. They might squeak if we expand it to 20 teams.
There's 16 teams in a conference. Right now only 6 get into the playoffs. If the change goes into effect, it will only be 7 teams. That is still less than half the teams in the conference.
:metal: amen! and, to reduce the chance that fans have to endure what packer fans endured last sunday, I would add this: only two pre-season games, starting first weekend of august. regular season starts third weekend of august teams play 16 games, but one game would be the same every year. the traditional rivalry game, afc vs. nfc , with home team alternating every year, played on Columbus day weekend in October. jets-giants, sf-oak, ravens-redskins, lions-bills, browns-packers, bears-colts, pats-panthers, atl=titans, etc. each team gets two bye weeks, and super bowl played second week of January ( sb3 was played on jan 12th). all conference playoff games done by end of December. trading deadline extended to week before thanksgiving. win-win-win for fans, instead of letting networks dictate everything.
goodell was talking about this again in an article on espn. and having friday and monday playoff games. i dont know what the fuck this guy is trying to do but he is going to butt fuck the entire league by the time he is done. also keeps on about the london thing. its just fucking brutal, and that 16 teams were in contention going into the final week, yes yes they were but they were all .500 teams so nobody really cares about them anyway. lets stop watering down the league and try to put an actual good product on the field. preferably with guys who can catch, and tackle. tackling being the biggest one.
Well from a competition view, the NFL playoffs do a bad job recently of figuring out who the best team is in the NFL. They find the best team in the month of January, while the playoffs really (from a competition view) are to decipher the best team in the league that whole year. Granted, the NFL doesn't care. The excitement is that any team that gets in can win. So from a money standpoint, perfect from them. From a competition standpoint of wanting the playoff to decide the best team of the year, you're just entering a bit more randomness into the mix (which again for money reason is definitely what they want)
It used to be that way when there were 21 or so teams and 16 made the playoffs. That was just idiotic. But ever since the NHL started expanding they've kept the playoff system intact. So the same 16 teams still make the playoffs but now it is out of 30 teams. Took a long time to get there and still a wee bit too much, but badly as bad as once it was. If the NHL expands again like they are threatening to do, and they leave the playoff system again, then it'll be 16 in out of 32. That's a reasonable system. I still prefer something that makes the regular season have more value myself, but in the end it could be much worse.
Sports today are like liquor in the old west. I feel like I should be constantly on the lookout for a plug at the bottom of the product where the real stuff was sucked out, diluted, and put back in at 10% of its previous concentration. And lord help us the crap they've added to our favorite guilty pleasures...... Yech.
fftopic:"maybe".....sir, IMO its already a slam dunk. back on topic - would love to see another team added to the WC. no doubt u would have the occasional year of a less deserving team in the mix but u would also capture those teams that get hot toward the end of the year, get healthy at the right time, and put it together.
How about this, add a 7 seed and have the 7 seed play the 6 seed in a college OT like game. Game starts 0-0, ball starts on the 30 yard line. Give teams 3 possesions each, after that the game is over if its not tied. Example of how the game would work Team A gets ball first, opens with a TD drive 7-0 Team B gets ball second, opens with a FG 7-3 Team B gets ball third, gets a FG 7-6 Team A gets ball fourth, is stopped Team A gets ball fifth, gets a FG 10-6 Team B gets ball final, score TD and wins game 10-13 Obviously it would never happen but have it be called like wildcard monday, give it to ESPN, and do it the DAY after week 17. Have both games played back to back and make a 3 hour show out of it. It doesnt have to be 3 possesions either, it can be like 5 or whatever would drag it out an hour and a half. After the first game is over do a little halftime show and then continue in the second game in a different stadium. 6 Seed will host it.
Nah, then don't include the 7th team if you do this. You can't thrown in some weird type of game to decide the final playoff spot. The first time a 6 seed loses with a better record to a 7 seed, there would be an outcry why this partial football game is overruling what 16 full football games told us, 6 was better than 7.. (but afraid of 7 because 7 8 9 :rofl2
