All morning i've been hearing about this "crap." I mean seriously, first off, good for him because I think in order for this shit to finally die in the media, more well known people need to announce out loud they are gay because apparently hollywood for the pass 2 decades havent been doing enough...

But in all seriousness, SO WHAT. I never gave two shit whether someone was gay or not but for the last 4 years the majority of the media has been on this topic and putting gays in the spotlight. Good for him but its just annoying as hell opening a newspaper or turning on the news and THIS is the top story..

I'm not homophobic or w/e ridiculous word some man made up, im just tired of hearing about it and seeing it. If you like to bite pillows behind close doors, good for you. I dont care just play a good game.

Also I think there will be a target on his back that will haunt him till he leaves the league. Say if he gets cut, the media will go crazy on w/e team because automatically they will assume its because hes gay. But overall yay for announcing it but coming out in 2014 doesnt seem that much of a big deal as there have been many famous people for decades who said they were gay and are doing well.

Also, why no attention to most of the WNBA players. They been gay since day one..

Shouldn't affect his place on teams boards because it was known to alot scouts and FOs already.

He quietly came out to his Mizzou teammates before last season and was kind of an open secret in the football ranks.

^ That's true and why the high-pitched crowd squealing at a WNBA game sounds like a a demand for an encore at an Indigo Girls concert.

As to whether Sam can transition from DE to OLB, I guess you can expect the "he plays better with his hand in the dirt" wise cracks.

Good point, I guess. However, have they openly come out?

I agree with Francesa today. We shouldn't care, it shouldn't matter, but it'll be a media circus for the team that drafts him, hurting his draft position. It'll be Tebow x's 10.

its relevant because it hasn't happened before, it shouldn't be any different than any another person with any other distinction to them, but the lack of open players will lead to it being a bigger deal than it should.

Sam will either play 4-3 or 3-4 with his hand in the dirt.

Maybe he can play 'both ways'???

Good point. Although I would add it shouldn't affect his place because it might have already impacted his place on boards.

I would hope his place on the boards would be just based on this play and not the "circus" idea, but from anonymous quotes in articles it sounds like some GM or scouts think it would create a distraction.

The irony is we'd be one of the best spots for him at least in terms of Rex/the locker room. Maybe not so much the NYC part of it though.

It's a shame that there'll be a form of tacit discrimination, teams that have no problem with his lifestyle will shy away from the PR 'distractions' it'll cause. Plus you more or less have to keep him the first year anyway if you do draft him or risk being labeled a homophobic.

You'd hope he would get rewarded for being honest up front and not springing this on a team after he was drafted but ultimately he'll be hurt by this. It's too bad the first people that have come out have been a marginal player on the way out in the NBA and a mid-round draft pick in the NFL. It'd be nice if someone came out that's got enough stature to force everyone to deal with culture shock.

I disagree; I think there are teams that will want him for the positive media attention it will bring, not to mention new fans from the LGBT community. that is certainly not a market that has previously been targeted by many sports teams.

If the Fins owner wants to make a statement and show the world that he's changed the atmosphere in the Miami locker room they would draft him. Besides he's a very good player and probably a bargain in the 3rd or 4th round. And he's an overachiever and is better on the field than his numbers show. But if he drops a team in a more gay friendly city like San Francisco or even New York might select him.

This would have been a much better story if he were a Tight-end turned wide receiver.
The only thing that matters is if he can play... and if a coach will sit him if he can't.

Tell you what, not only is he brave (can't believe in 2014 we're still saying someone is brave to admit they're gay) , its a really smart move.
I'm sure someone will make some sort of joke out of this, but the endorsements this guy is going to make is likely to make him a very well known and wealthy young man.
    Best of luck to him
