I guess the Jets don't like any of the skill players in this draft and are just trying to stack the line. I hope the line becomes awesome after all of this. Whoever is the starting QB has to feel a bit more comfortable going into this year. Someone has to stick.
It's not even the lineman ...it's the fact that he is a project lineman. He is a DL we are going to convert to OL aka a guy who would have been available as an UDFA.
Hey at least we didn't waste a 2nd round pick on a project OL this year. If Ducasse was drafted in the 6th his waste of space wouldn't even be on the roster today....on the bright said he probably won't come Week 1.
Lots of veteran FA tight ends still available, plus June 1 cuts. Beckum and Boss ex-Giants are still there. Also Dallas Clark, Chris Cooley, Randy McMichael, Leonard Pope, Kellen Winslow.
For some reason, people love to give the Pats everything. Draft picks, solid players. I don't understand this.
"DT/OT William Campbell, Michigan 6'5, 310 Great combo of size and athleticism with not much production to go with it. Campbell reminds me of J.R. Sweezy in that regard, so I'm projecting him as a possible offensive line convert for Tom Cable (also, Gil Brandt did note that some teams were considering this). Campbell played tackle in high school and was planning on making the switch to the offensive side of the ball prior to a regime change (apparently decided a new staff would help his production on that side of the ball). Regardless, he is a former blue-chip recruit that didn't live up to expectations in school. He's a huge man though, 6'5 with an 80" wingspan and 10+" hands, so the thought of him on the offensive line is intriguing. His speed/agility times are about in the range you'd hope for in a guard/tackle prospect of his size - 5.15 40, 4.7 short shuttle, 7.3 3-cone, and an 8'11 broad jump and 27" vert. He didn't fare all that well on the defensive side of the ball but we know Tom Cable likes the mentality that defensive players bring to the OL. I admit that this post particularly might be a reach, but it's Draft season, so here you go."
Exactly, this is a guy who wasn't getting drafted and would have been available as a UDFA...total waste of a pick.
Anyway, this is really the first pick I do not get. This guy would have been available as a UDFA most likely. Why not go for value here? Rogers, Washington, Thomas, Rambo, Fauria, etc. Heck, a FB like Line or a punter like Wing. Hell, even a QB like Dysert or Scott to add to the competition.
Because this frachise just does not get it. It doesn't matter who is in charge. They can feed us this line about BPA but the bottom line is they probably wanted Quesenberry (who would have been a great pick) and he was taken so we panicked and picked up some project. This team has drafted so many projects over the years and outside of Brad Smith none of them have ever panned out.
This just makes no sense to me. The rest of the picks I understood to some level but this is just shocking to me. At least it's late enough that it doesn't really matter much. But geez....
JMO, you can't build a house without laying the foundation first. Build from the lines out, the big guys that are in there on every down and control the LOS, and plug and play skill players on top. This year, we build the line that will be ready to block for a new QB next year. I said in a thread last week I would be thrilled if our first 2 picks were guards, but I can't be upset about 3 new lineman in the later rounds. The Jets won't be built in a day, but we damn sure come out much improved down the road in one weekend.
And before the draft people were screaming that we had no depth on either line..we had 8 picks..you can't build everything in one draft.
The problem is you have areas of need that have potential playmakers on the board and you waste this pick on a project. I know a lot of people are in love with some of the players we drafted but outside of Winters and Oday I hate our draft.
