Well Henson opted out of his contract that year ... Jeff signed a 5 year deal with a Major League team, i forgot who but i believe his contract wouldnt allow him to sign with any other team for 5 years
Yea, in Mangini's conversation today he said to those who didn't get picked there is still a chance since he is going to be looking.
There's no point. You lose his rights next season if you have not signed him before the draft. And by definition you cannot sign him since he is not allowed to negotiate with you by his existing Cubs contract. If he is drafted again next season the team who drafts him will be in the same position. The following season he becomes available as a free agent but for 3 more seasons cannot negotiate with an NFL team by terms of his contract. The Drew Henson situation was different because he left Michigan early to go play baseball, passing up his senior season in 2001 to sign with the Yankees. He went undrafted in the 2002 draft because he was under contract to the Yankees and there would have been no point. In 2003, with his baseball career faltering at the AAA level the Texans decided to risk drafting him in his second and last year of draft eligibility with the hope being that he could negotiate a release from his Yankees contract and go to the NFL. This indeed transpired and Houston was able to trade his rights to Dallas prior to the 2004 draft, upon which date he would have been a full free agent. Henson was compensated by both the Texans and the Cowboys to sign a contract prior to the 2004 draft.
I think Mangini's mantra that "the best players play" and making everyone compete for their spot would be attractive to self-confident UDFA's
TE Johnny Harline would be a good play maker to take a look at. 935 yards and 12 TDs this year, 853 yards and 5 TDs last year.
well James Jones's counterpart John Broussard just got drafted...looks like I have another interview to conduct...shit their making my life difficult
Just remember guys,Marques Colston didn't get picked until #252 and look at him now. Always a diamond in the rough, maybe we'll get lucky and find one.
