Well Faneca did give up 7 sacks, so if his replacement played better, than that is probably a big time reason for the decrease in the level of the comp. pick.

anybody with a brain knew he didnt deserve a pro bowl selection (Yes I know that he still got selected, so it still counts) in my eyes, he was one of our weakest lineman, which is unacceptable seeing as how we are paying him like the top guard in the NFL.

The formula definitely does not take into account how the replacement played. Plus, it's hard to objectively judge the play of an offensive lineman.

Huge money, 99% of snaps, Pro Bowl (it doesn't matter whether it's deserved or not). I really don't get how it was only a 5th.

Oh, the Steelers signed Justin Hartwig and he started all 16 games. Between him and Moore, I suppose that's the reason Pittsburgh only got a 5th rounder for Faneca.

edit: I'm not going to search for it, but Hartwig may not have been a true UFA. If so, he probably wouldn't play into the compensatory pick thing. Therefore, it still might only be about Moore and Faneca. Clark Haggans (signed by Arizona) wasn't enough of an impact player to mean anything here.

I think the concept behind comp picks is lame but the Pats will probably find the players they want with or without them so I'm not too broken up about it.

Hypothetically, if Barton played like an all-star and Scott played terribly, Scott still has the bigger contract and profile. I think the point is moot though considering he'll be playing beside Harris and behind Jenkins while Barton plays for the Brown under Mangini...

Eric Barton will be canceled out by Bart Scott, at the very least. We're unlikely to net any compensatory picks as it stands. Most of our losses so far have come from cuts, which don't factor in.

    We've lost:

    Eric Barton
    Hank Poteat
    Mike Nugent
    CJ Mosley
    Cody Spencer

Ty Law is unlikely to sign with anyone prior to the season, so we can toss his name out. Unsure about Bubba Franks. Jesse Chatman will probably sign with someone.

    We've signed:

    Bart Scott
    Jim Leonhard
    Marques Douglas
    Howard Green
    Larry Izzo

It's not exactly a sparkling list of FAs lost. If Poteat ends up starting somehow, we could see a net gain of a low round pick. The one thing that makes it interesting is Coles. The release of his contract has been reported in some circles as a way that allowed him to become a UFA (released the Jets from the contract) and in others that had the Jets releasing him. With his $28 million contract, if he somehow did renegotiate to become a UFA, he could tilt it in our favor of getting a pick back.

I didn't think so, but many reports had him renegotiating to become a UFA, rather than being cut. Not sure how that works for compensatory picks, but I'll take your word for it.

according to a steelers beat writer, the steelers themselves expected a 3rd and were stunned by the news

Pats get 5 picks out of the first 97 with the comp pick for Asante, but BB will trade one of those 3 second rounders for a first next year if he can find a suitor.

Bigtime comp picks next year due to all those FA's being signed away from Patriots this year.

    Evans,Izzo,Gaffney,Washington.

It's highly unlikely Evans, Izzo, or Washington will net anything. The Pates won't get three comp picks next year.

I'm assuming that last part was a joke, you won't be getting any comp picks for those turds.

They might get something for Gaffney, maybe a 6th or 7th rounder. I don't know how much Denver signed him for, but I don't think it was for peanuts. There is a good chance Brandon Marshall is going to be suspended for multiple games. This may allow Gaffney to start a number of games and turn in a pretty good season.

I can live with them only getting a 7th in compensation for a change.

You don't get picks for players you drop anyway. The jets dropped Chad.

Bottom line..trade your over valued player to Oakland or Philly and get extra picks

Ugh. Well aware. I was pointing out that even if he HAD been a free agent signing, rather than a cut player, we still had those two fat FA signings that would have canceled out the contract he received from the Dolphins. Thanks for restating things discussed earlier in the thread, though.

Those guys won't get anything high. The Pats got the 3 because of Samuels.

Go away. This thread was fine without you.

The Cheatriots did not get anything "because of Samuels".

You stupid or just play stupid on this board?

The Pats got the compensatory pick at the end of the 3rd round this year because they lost Samuel to free agency last year. Tool!
