BECAUSE HE IS A THIRD STRING QB PLAYING AGAINST THIRD STRING PLAYERS. i don't understand why people dismiss this idea, like really. it's the same concept as the lions going 4-0 in the preseason and going 0-16 in the regular season that same year. im sure the backups for the lions played well and thats why they won, but im sure no one was saying that they should of started their backups you guys know OTHER backups play well, yet no one gives a shit. seriously, the coaches see simms, sanchez, mcelroy, and geno every damn day. if simms played better than them in camp, they'd give him a shot
Sounds like we have a real qb controversy now... A fourth string player comes out of nowhere and takes NY by storm? Stranger things have happened. Don't forget...this is the Jets. They'll probably cut him tomorrow. I'll pin my hopes on a more realistic scenario. Simm earns the #3 slot. Sanchez shoulder keeps him benched. Geno sucks so bad that the Jets have no choice but to play the kid. Now...The question is...can he throw a good punt?
i just don't understand why people have to be so harsh on geno. i don't even care if you're being "realistic", have some fucking optimism for once
Even if Simms did well for a few games and reverted back to a sub-par QB, we're still way ahead of the game over Sanchez. It's not like the Jets are taking a huge chance giving Simms a start. If he throws 4/20 for 50 yards with 0 td's and 2 int's it's only marginally worse then a Sanchez stat line. The question for the Jets right now isn't who is going to be their next Joe Namath, the question is who is going to play better then dog shit Sanchez. Simms showed tonight that he has the potential to be at least average, which is a huge upgrade we should all be thrilled about.
geno is absolutely terrible and not ready in every way shape an form. if hes starting week 1 its gonna be an ugly ugly affair. i dont see the harm in getting simms in
I don't think Geno is ready but I do think Morningwood is smart enough to limit the play calling to things he's shown he can handle. Lot's of screen passes coming ...
you might be right on Geno, but i can tell you that Simms is equally as risky to deliver an ugly game. Let players earn their spots and progress instead of always throwing in a player whos only real strenght at this point is that he hasn't played enough yet for you to dislike him. Last year it was mcelroy, now it is simms. You might not like it, but from a neutral point of view, so far the best QB on the jets rooster is sanchez, albeit not by a big margin.
We had another one of those UDFA's one time that looked good enough to give a try to, his name was Wayne Chrebet. How'd that work out ? ....just sayin' .......
Seeing as how Matt Simms is the second coming of his father maybe we should sign him to a $40 guaranteed deal! ...anyone remember Brett Ratliff? He was preseason MVP! Relax it's against 3rd and 4th stringers...but hey if somehow he starts during the regular season as a fan I sure as hell hope he is like his father! Lol
I'm not sure this argument holds water with a QB. If Simms played with the 1st team he'd also be throwing to better receivers, behind a better offensive line, and have a better running game to set up the passes. Given that his decision making has shown to be good, his accuracy may well be the best of any QB on the Jets roster right now, and his mechanics are outstanding, and he has also shown he can take a hit, I don't think it is as big a reach as many seem to think. I'm not saying it is the best option at the moment.....but I do think it is an option.
Nagle is a great example of how misleading and meaningless preseason is. Nagle had a very good preseason in 1992 and won the starting QB job over O'Brien. The Jets went 5-0 in the preseason. Nagle also had a great first game, throwing for almost 400 yards. The Jets finished 4-12 and Nagle was a bust. One of the best predictorsvof NFL success for a college QB is the number of college start a QB has. Smith started four years. Sanchez only started 12games or so over one season. Simms has less than a season of college starts. The odds of Simms succeeding in the NFL are ridiculoisly long. He couldn't even succeed in college. Lets not base the future of the Jets at the most important position on 7 quarters or so of preseason football. As for the post that stated that Smith fell apart last year, when was that exactly? Looks to me like the WV defense fell apart. Smith threw for 8 TDs in a game. Simms has 8 TDs and 8 picks for his college career. I know college stats can be over emphasized, but Simms has no stats. If a miracle happens, he is another Matt Cassell. The reality is he will flame out in a hurry. Lets be realistic.
I expect Mark will begin throwing today/tomorrow and that he will be ready to go. I suspect this is a way of keeping TB off balance a bit BUT if he can't go Geno has a chance to take this job and never look back. he doesn't have to do anything special, he just needs to protect the ball, make a play here and there and help give us a chance to win.
Pretty much. If he can do that for the first game or two then I don't know if Sanchez plays another snap for the Jets. Which I'm fine with, personally. If Geno is the future then lets move forward, if he's not then we'll have to look somewhere else. It will be interesting to see what happens with all the Sanchez fans (not Jets fans) on this board if Geno takes the job and runs with it.
we are all Jet fans first, if the Jets are winning we will be happy. I hope Mark starts and gets his last shot with us but if not I'm rooting for whoever is under C.
