If i am wrong i will step up like a man and admit i was wrong, only problem is he wont start next year because we are going to draft a dt or sign one. If wrong i will personally buy a Sione Pouha jersey take a picture of me wearing it and put it as my avatar. U can quote me on that
He's a natural LT, not a natural RT. Most interchangable OT's are guys who have the size to play both sides (6'6, 310+), and have learned and mastered the different hand placement, footwork, etc. that it takes to play each side. Jones does not have the size (6'4, 295), and he has the perfect qualities for a pass-protecting LT.
okay fair enough i didnt remember what jones was coming out of college. i was just going of the start off the season. but i still think if we so call sign shaffer ethier he or jones are gonna play RT.
Mack mentioned earlier that one of the two (more likely Jones) could be moved to guard. I'd rather have Shaffer at LT, and Jones at LG, then have one of them start at RT where I think they would be overmatched.
Neither can play RT? Jones was our Rt to start this season off... Just because he isn't a mountain doesn't mean he can't play RT...
It should be noted that since Vick is a lefty, Shaffer wasn't protecting Vick's blindside. He might be a better fit at RT than we are giving him credit for.
Ugh... there's more to being a RT than just size (which plays a large role, and Jones is extremely small, but anyway.) Jones has the perfect technique for a LT. The strong parts of his game do not in any way, shape, or form, match him up at the RT position. Jones was the RT last year because we lost McKenzie and Bradway was a jackass who didn't feel the need to draft any offensive linemen. If Jones is your RT, you automatically have a weakness on the line. It's like making a speed rusher (like Abraham) a 3-4 DE. It just doesn't work, because their game is the exact opposite of what is being asked of the position.
There are a few tackles that can play both sides in the NFL, but invariably, even those guys are better on one side vs. the other. Jones is a much better pass blocker than run blocker.... NOT unlike Ferguson at this point in HIS career. Jones is also bit undersized for RT, unless it's a zome blocking scheme. Jones has also been bounced around A LOT. A TE who went to LT only in his senior year. Then, he was at RT in 2004, but never played a snap. Then he went through last preseason at RT, played two games and got switched to LT again. Impatience again..... I think half of you guys would cut every second year player on the team if they din't make the freakin pro bowl. This other knuc.... person, bring up Pouha's stats doesn't understand SQUAT about how the D line scheme worked last year. First of all, Reed got the majority of playing time at SNT. Secondly, Pouha was injured, and that was why he was deactivated for several games. Third.... the SNT is not expected to get sacks, or even very many tackles in this scheme we used. He is not supposed to penetrate, he's supposed to engage both the guard and center, read the play, and then persue, but staying in his gap the whole time. Even in pass rush mode, he is supposed to stay in his lane to prevent the QB from stepping up or running the ball. It;s the 3T, or 3 Technique tackle that is supposed to get penetration, and that is on every play. The football IQ around here is knee high to a carpenter ant sometimes.
thanks for the breakdown. so the 3T DT on this team was Dewayne robertson correct? if so this furthers my statment that robertson is a bust cause he had no pass rush except for his 1 2 sack game this season
Shaffer would be one of the smallest RT's in the league. I'd love to get a monster RT in the draft (McNeill).
I didn't want to make another thread on this... 3-4 base defense? It is for sure the Jets are going to do this?
Nothing official, but it has been mentioned that is it probable that we will switch to a 3-4 next season in many articles all over the net.
Robertson definitely had a lousy year. Part of that problem is the fact that we didn't have a solid SNT last year. The SNT is there to make sure that the other three linemen can't get doubled teamed by an O lineman. He is supposed to occupy two of them, and by doing so, keep the center and guard off Vilma as well. When it works well, the opposing team will end up keeping their TE in to block. Robertson, the 3T, is not very good at fighting through double teams.... which is why most people realise he's no NT in a 3-4. You may remember the brief fist fight between Vilma and Reed last year? Reed was playing the SNT as a 3T, and Vilma kept getting blocked by the center. They were jawing at each other for 2 quarters, and the coaches never stepped in.... another reason why I buried Edwards and his staff last year. They failed to coach, period. It isnt Vilma's job to correct players. You may have noticed, one of Mangini's first cuts was Reed. Legree played OK as Robertson's 3T backup though. I've watched Pouha very carefully... he can be a NT, if he is coachable, and they spend extra time on him. I am hoping Cox gets Pouha as a special project. If there isn't a big improvement this year, then he may well turn out to be nothing more than depth, but I don't think so. He's huge, and blew up the combine in the strength and explosiveness drills. He needs better stamina, a little more of a mean streak, and to improve on his technique and mechanics. They did jump for him as a third round pick, but they also saw the upside with this kid.
