We always joke about the Jets time to shine is the offseason but that really will be a thing these next two drafts. Eight picks in the 1st two rounds including five in the 1st round over these next two drafts. The Jets could screw this up of course but the opportunity will be there for them to improve the team rather quickly if they hit on these picks and most importantly find a franchise QB. In a division with Allen and Maye they need to find a QB to have a shot in the AFCE.
Because we're more than a QBoTF from contention. This may sound like heresy, but I think we already have our bridge QB in Tyrod. His courage and leadership was critical in the win yesterday. I have a feeling even Fields may have learned something about playing QB in adverse conditions yesterday. I can't think of a better mentor for a young QB fresh out of college to learn what it takes to be a QB in the NFL. This is a rejuvenated roster because they feel they can compete and win WITH Tyrod behind center. Bringing back Fields at this point in any capacity would be or should be a fireable offense barring injury.. I'll say this again. If Mendoza or Simpson falls to us at 5 or wherever we pick, take him. Trade up using valuable draft capital? No. Use those picks and all that cap cash to upgrade the entire roster first. There has been very little noise from Florham Pk. about Mendoza lately so if we're lucky, Mougey is having second thoughts about trading up. With or without Mendoza/Simpson, we're not contending for the VLT in '26 so take the long view of things. Fill the OL depth, get some more size in the middle of our DL and WR room, more speed in the middle and secondary. Most of all, send Wilks on his way and get a fresh mind to come in and run the Defense. Glenn doesn't really need Wilks guidance going forward as was exhibited yesterday, he's growing into the position of HC. If we can discover some 2nd or 3rd QB talent? Great.. If not, we'll be fine IF we can stock the roster with younger, smarter, bigger and faster talent. Our CS will have momentum going for them going into year 2 as well especially if we continue playing at this higher level.
Does Tyrod really want to start a full slate next year? And his play style at his age just means he’s going to get hurt and you’re thrusting the rookie in anyways. Tyrod’s a good dude but I’m not sure he wants to be a starter next year at 37 but maybe I’m wrong.
You're probably right. I know damn well if I was 37 yo, getting hit by large kids wouldn't be on my to-do list either. If Tyrod wants to play next year? why not bring him back again as a placeholder/mentor. Even from a character-based issue, you would want a guy like Tyrod in a young kid's ear showing him the ropes. Sure, he might get hurt, but if we have to throw the kid in early, we do it and hope for the best. Basically, if we upgrade the roster enough, IF we have to plug the kid in there won't be this catastrophic drop off. We're not contending next year anyway as this year was restocking, next year will be rebuilding, '27 becomes showtime.
It fits with what Woody thinks would be a good move. It doesn’t fit with when it seems like Glenn and Mougey are trying to build though so we’ll see who wins that battle.
I don’t think it DOESNT fit what we wanna build but yea it’s far from ideal. Kyler can at least play the position, albeit not well, and will probably end up being cut which makes him available for peanuts. I can’t imagine anyone trading anything for him or giving him more than a glorified one year deal. all this being said, I don’t want him.
We won't discover 2nd or 3d round QB talent, I have already went though the probabilities there in recent history and this cannot be a real plan. A lottery ticket maybe, but the Jets can't count on winning the lottery. I know people are not high on this year's QB draft so far, but we don't even know who will declare yet. I think there is a good chance Moore will declare just because he looks like a top 3 pick likely going #1 if he continues to play like had has lately. I think when it is said and done there will be a couple of higher probability cracks at the QB if our pick is high enough. And if we are out of range, we will miss out or waste massive capital. As far as building the rest of the team, I think the offense is ready now for the rookie QB to come in. We already have OL structure and some good weapons. A few pieces missing, but I think the core is in place. It will be much more beneficial to bring the young QB now and then gradually improve defense, etc... If we do the other way, we might not be in position to draft that high to get a good prospect and at the same time without a QB we will just fail. QB is the most important player in all sports. Without solving this problem it will be very difficult to have a sustained winner. We need to find a way to solve the QB problem.
We do have to solve the QB problem. We don't have to overpay for talent that is NOT generational to solve it. If Moore does not declare? we will have to spend a ton of capital to move up and honestly, I don't think this is the year for that. If we play well enough, we will be out of range of the #1 pick without completely mortgaging the future which I think is very shortsighted. As you can guess, I'm more of a long-view person. The offense systematically is ready, but we need more size in the WR room and perhaps an upgrade at center and LT. Both can be covered via draft or FA. The Defense definitely needs more size on the DL, more speed in the middle and secondary along with more experience. They also need a different coach to run it too. The temptation is to rush in and fix things PDQ. I don't think that's wise at this point especially when we lose nothing by being patient and not take any shortcuts. We have 18(?) picks total over the next two drafts so let's not squander them with splashy trade ups and overpays. Makes for great headlines but more often than not for the Jets, amount to nothing in the long run.
And I am not saying we SHOULD sell a farm for a QB prospect who is not amazing. Which is why I want a higher pick in the draft, even if means Atlanta does not muff a punt return and we lose that game by a few points!!! What I am saying is that everything that was built will be eventually ruined unless we can get a QB. I am not convinced this is not the year. I have seen so far in Moore and Mendoza someone who has a chance. Doesn't mean I would give up a farm, but without solving the QB problem, ultimately we will fail, regime fired, etc... I have seen this movie play out again and again and again. And then another GM will trade the talent we have on offense since we can't afford all after the rookie deals, draft a QB without perfect situation, ruin him, etc... There is no need to go over what has happened with us every time. Right now the offense is ready to welcome a QB. We have protection and we have weapons. We have a play caller who is not complete garbage like before. I think Mooge understands that. Don't be surprised if he makes a bold expensive move with the cost directly proportional to our draft position.
It would be tough for them to cut him at the end of this season as I think he would count nearly $60m against the cap - after next season that drops to $7m. They could trade him to the Jets then it is an expensive 2026 for the Jets (he is due to get paid $53m) then they could then get out in 27 or 28 if it doesn't pan out. One complication is they are tied into Fields for $23m for 26 so that would be over $70m in 2026 just at the QB spot (or nearly a quarter of the entire cap for the team).
There is no complication. We are tied to Fields for 10 mil, that's it. Everything else is CAP manipulations that everyone is doing on large contracts. We have good amount of CAP space available, and more can be generated. All comes down to how much actual $s Woody wants to spend. While we CAN get the trade done and absorb him though, I wouldn't personally do it.
I think we are going to get Fernando Mendoza I just see him as someone Woody Johnson will really push for. His father is a doctor so they have the medical legacy to bond over. Also Mendoza interns on wall street, I bet he speaks like a CEO which will appeal to Woody. its not the worst thing in the world. he seems like a guy who will get the ball out quickly and spread it around, kinda like Goff does in Detroit, where Engstrand and Glenn cut their teeth anyway
I liked him predraft I still don't think he is washed up either. He would have been a better choice at 67 than bloody Wilson at #2
I don’t know, the sauce trade has me thinking that maybe the days of Woody having that strong of an influence are over. He’s definitely going to have influence, but I can’t see him being completely OK with trading one of the most marketable guys in the NFL if he was still meddling in day-to-day operations. If we end up with Mendoza, fine, but if it cost us an extra draft pick then that would be pretty disappointing.
Where are you getting $10m from? Spotrac and overthecap both show him as counting as $22m dead cap for 2026
It’s not really that big of a deal for teams to do this any more. The Broncos ate a massive amount of dead cap when they cut Russell Wilson. They can spread it out however they want or absorb it all in one year and have a lighter FA year. The Jets just did it with Rodgers too. Matt Ryan as well a couple years back. Teams are no longer scared of the dead cap on bad QB contracts. The Cardinals probably seek to trade him for a conditional late round pick and when there are no suitors they’ll cut him in March.
