Yeah the offense has sucked forever, I don’t think that’s relevant to playcalling in the last (meaningless) preseason game. The play calls for offenses and defenses for BOTH teams were vanilla. Hell it was 6-3 at halftime. Are the Eagles going to have a boring, bad offense too?
The Eagles have something working for them that the Jets do not.. Championship experience at the QB, OC, HC positions. The Jets are for the most part in OJT mode as is everyone in critical offensive positions the most important being OC. They don't seem to know how to execute anything other than the GnP although the 2 min drill looked better than I've seen in quite some time. At the moment, the Jet offense is predictable, and the weak link is the Qb's ability to throw the football down field consistently. He can run but can he pass is the overriding question. The playcalling isn't something that magically turns on when the real season begins. The OC has no real feel for the rhythm of this offense or its personnel. 3 games isn't enough time to find out either which is why I think 4 games minimum in the preseason. The team still is penalty prone at critical times and as was pointed out, the Jet GnP can't overcome 1st and 20 or worse.
Pretty sure it was established fan knowledge around 2004 that teams don't open up the playbook for the scrubs in the last preseason game.
Teams didn't used to play their starters either but that's starting to change.. Good thing the Jets are running the GnP so there's run/run/pass in front of the marker/ punt. If we had an established, experienced OC, there would probably be a big difference between the real offense and the preseason offense. This is the NY Jet GnP and there's not a lot of variations so, the difference between preseason offense and the regular season offense is just a matter of who's on the field. Those guys need more than practice. They need real game experience and that goes for the OC too. Something the Jets are woefully short on at the moment with a new CS in place.
It's truly sad. Offensively speaking, 2015 Fitz year was fun, until it wasn't = week 17, he throws 3 picks in second half at Buffalo, don't make playoffs There was also like a 5 week or so spell McCowns first year, 2017, where they were putting up 25 - 30 points against bad teams, had lead going into 4th, but the defense was trash and Jets couldn't hold. It was fun watching the offense score though And I guess last quarter of season with Rodgers last year had some decent offensive out puts. Ugh, however, I still get heartburn thinking about last season I bet Vinny can still sling that rock.....
Don't you think they know this stuff? Coaches from high school to the pros. try to put their players in position to succeed. They are way ahead of us.
We have no evidence one way or the other exactly what this CS knows or how to use that knowledge. This is as much a process for them as it is for the players learning the new way of doing things. Saleh didn't put his guys in the position to succeed. Last year we saw what happens when coaches don't. So far this preseason, call the playcalling vanilla but you have to wonder what wonderous offensive gameplans they have under wraps ready to unleash upon the NFL. The GnP isn't geared for high scoring so points become critical as opposed to more modern offenses. Unless there's another Jets team waiting to take the field against the Steelers, I wouldn't expect some magical transformation in the playcalling or the overall scheme. Glenn has already said they will take what the defense gives. What happens when the Defense takes the underneath stuff away...??
We don't have a QB. In order to be good on offense, you need a QB, an offensive line, and an offensive coordinator. We don't have a QB. We might not have an OC, either, but it is going to be almost impossible to tell with a Bottom 5 QB room.
With all due respect to Fitzy shitting himself that entire game, Ryan Quigley lost us that game with the first quarter shank punt. Set the entire mood for the game along with Marshall’s first Q drop that would’ve moved the sticks. I don’t know that I’ve ever felt SOJ run through my bones as much as that moment. Maybe when Herm kneeled to lose two yards to “center the ball” at Heinz field for Dougy O to miss the FG in 04.
No offense but they are the professionals at this and they are playing against the same. No fan on this board has any idea what it takes to coach at this level. Enjoy the games.
Robert Saleh and Adam Gase send their regards... I agree AG deserves the benefit of the doubt but again, need to see it to believe in it first. We'll have a much better idea in year 2.
Yes. The best offense keep the defense guessing. AG can't allow our offense to be one dimensional that everyone knows what's coming. But only problem with using the pass to set up the run, is if we have an incompletion on 1st down. Now it's 2nd and 10, and we kinda locked ourselves into passing again (our weakness). I can see AR staying with the run on early downs, trying to get into a 'manageable' 3rd and whatevers, that could turn into pass or run. Going to be a fun year!
Ugh…I know you’re right, but man, that strategy of “trying to get into manageable 3rd downs” sounds SO disgusting…it’s like already giving up. No Super Bowl team is thinking that way. They are thinking how do we score touchdowns. I am just trying to resign myself to yet another year of struggling to score 17 points per game and struggling to complete intermediate passes
Didn't we have a short period of time with ZW we tried passing on 1st downs? Something different than always running on 1st down. It kinda worked at first, but then pettered out. I can't recall all the specifics..might have been under Gace?
