But everyone should understand that this is a job that takes multiple years. The problem is people want instant gratification life doesn't work like that. You want something you work for it, there will always be bumps in the road but just as long as there is progress that's what matters. We still haven't seen the receivers he drafted play yet. That doesn't mean that these players are going to not contribute in upcoming years. Amaro has been a contributor in the offense and could get better. You complain that Idzik didn't draft any immediate contributors yet rag on a guy that's been contributing and your logic is that he isn't Antonio Gates or Gronk. That makes no sense. He drafted Winters who has struggled but is still young. But Aboushi has looked promising and Dozier is a developing player. Colon has been solid, Giamomini has been solid as well. WR is not a weakness. CB is a weakness but lets see how things are once Milliner and McDougal get back plus he found solid contributors in Walls and Marcus Williams. He addressed LB via free agency and the draft, IK has looked solid in limited snaps, Reilly has been contributing on special teams.
He lost Stephen Hill? What does that even mean? Do you even watch the games? Cumberland is actually quite fast, it's everything else about him that sucks. And Amaro is now on pace for a great rookie year by a TE. So at WR we got from Hill and Holmes to Decker and Harvin, but it's still a weakness. So let me guess, with your kind of backseat logic, anything short of acquiring Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant in the same year would be bad, yes?
In most jobs when you make a lot of mistakes in a short period of time, you get fired not given more time to correct them. This is especially true for those new to the job as they have not establish a history of success to garner the benefit of the doubt.
In most jobs especially if you're new you get leeway until you prove without a doubt that you're incompetent. With new general managers it is usually understood that it takes time to rebuild. This is a general manager that was a scout on 2 teams that went on to play in the Super Bowl (Bucs and Cardinals) and a contract guy on another (Seahawks) I trust his judgement and strategy given that track record.
I doubt anyone who's been working towards landing a GM job would pass because of "the toxic local media...moronic fans and a spineless owner" when there are only 32 of those jobs in the entire world at any point in time. There might be the occasional candidate that would pass because he himself is "spineless" but to say "most" will is horse manure.
I must be in the wrong business. What jobs are those where you get 2 years to "prove without a doubt that you're incompetent"?
General manager of a professional football team is a lot different than most 9-5 jobs. Me or you being incompetent in our 9-5 jobs for 2 years would get us fired. But when you're rebuilding an NFL team it takes more than 2 years. Idzik is trying to build a team for long term success. Tanny built a team with a short window I guess that's what you want.
Reports are his incompetence is has him on the hot seat so maybe the GM job is not so different than my 9-5. Also Idzik sucking at his job has nothing to do with Tanny and his short window just like it has nothing to do with him not being able to hire his own coach.
That's why I said most GOOD candidates. Good candidates are in demand, they can pick and choose where they go. So if you are a candidate like that, where would you try to go, to some normally run franchise where you will almost certainly get several years to do your thing, or to one where every decision you make that doesn't work out optimally will be used to crucify you by obnoxious fans and media before the owner fires you right as your plan is starting to take shape? I know where I would try to go.
What would you guys think about Stephen Jones? He seems to be the one behind the scenes making the moves that has put Dallas where they are now. I read an article where it said he took the Manziel draft card out of his father's hand when the Cowboys were up to pick this past draft. Thats what I like to hear because I wouldn't put it past Woody to act in a Jerry Jones type of manner.
You guys are really starting to over think this with the 9-5 job argument. I'll say it once more. Yes typically a GM should get more than 2 years, but our "GM" has made double the mistakes vs smart moves. What confidence should we have that this next draft will be different from the last? We will have half the picks. By record that means he might get us a half of a good player. Free agency? I'm just waiting for him to sign more guys I've never heard of. Decker was his only signing that wasn't horrible, and even that will be debated by many here.
The general manager of an NFL franchise is different than an average 9-5 job. It takes years for a rebuilding team in most normal circumstances. I said this in the post you quoted. Now if the Jets were in win now mode and the team goes 3-13 I could understand.
If Idzik looses his job, it will be because of an astoundingly bad public relations gaffe in his mid-season state of the team speech. The Jets cant afford to hire another unproven candidate who may not hold up to a media onslaught. They need to hire a proven commodity along with a protege who is then groomed over the next few years. I've never been a fan of Casserly, but a guy like him can certainly handle the NY media and groom someone along the way
He lost Stephen Hill? What does that even mean? It means that they had plans for their 2nd-round pick at WR and they lost that "talent" marginal though it was and didn't actually replace it at the time with any credible alternative. And, yes, I have DirecTV and have watched way too many games. Have you? Cause the way you are felating Idzik, you'd think the Jets actually won more than ONE of their first 8 games and don't have virtually the same needs as they've had for TWO seasons. The plan people keep saying he has: build through the draft; prudently use FA, is the same plan EVERY GM has. Only some GMs actually are able to follow through on it. He botched both phases. the FAs were impactless, and draft, marginal, and, really, not focused on actual needs, except where injury struck. So, if Cumberland is all that fast, why even waste a pick on a receiving TE who really adds nothing to the overall speed of the receiver corps and isn't all that great a blocker? Especially when your REAL need was a viable speedy deep threat... All throughout the offseason, Idzik outfoxed himself: from the CB market in FA, to the selection of three crappy WRs when there was actual quality out there, to the bargain basement handling of the OL and the virtual non-addressing of age at the LB position. And let's examine the argument that we went from Hill and Holmes to Decker and Harvin: first of all, we didn't go from Hill and Holmes to Decker and Harvin. We went from Hill and Holmes to Decker. Harvin came much later, AFTER the season was lost. The offseason was a disaster at WR. A bunch of useless picks and FA signings that took away from other areas that could have been addressed better. And, yes, anything short of acquiring actual talent that makes the Jets receiving corps formidable is bad. Decker is OK, barely. He had a number of costly drops. Ran out of bounds for no reason. Not really all that great. But, true, better than the absolute dreck Idzik left us with the year before. Again, there's nothing special about Idzik's plan. It's the same plan EVERY GM has. His execution has been inadequate. So, why keep someone who can't even get a quality WR out of a draft that had no less than FIVE available quality players (I'm talking about players that were available to the Jets without even trading up)? Why give more time to someone who so totally botched the CB position that the Jets were left trying out FAs at both spots during the season? And, please, managing the salary cap is something my 3rd grade nephew could do: virtually no NFL contracts have significant lasting effect on cap because the overwhelming majority can be restructured or a player can be cut. Idzik didn't do anything innovative. He just either cut or restructured. No rocket science there. When you fall for a guy, you really fall hard!!
I think most people will say DeCosta is #1 but I'd also be interested in Tobin of cincy. They have drafted well of late.
he did sound like a dopey retard in that press conference. hopefully that isn't the difference between him being fired or not because it's pretty insignificant in the grand scheme. lmfao at the guy upset about "losing" Stephen hill. that explains a lot.
Sometimes you interview for the type of job that you want in the future (even though you don't expect to want the current position) because you want the experience of an interview. The more you interview for a job, the better you can present yourself in the future because you understand the types of questions that are asked in those situations.
Maybe DeCosta didn't take the job last time because he didn't want Rex. Everybody thought because they were both with the Ravens it would be a good fit. But who knows. When he was with the Ravens they went outside the organization for a first time HC over choosing Rex. Could be now he'd take the job. But I doubt it. The Jets like last time will only get bottom tier applicants. They don't want what happened to Idzik after two years to happen to them.
Since Hill was on the team when Idzik arrived, and was somebody else's bust of a 2nd round pick, Idzik losing him makes no sense whatsoever. Idzik did the right thing and gave Hill one last chance in training camp, since it was his 3rd year, but when Hill once again failed to produce, they correctly cut him. Except that the FAs were not impactless at all. Decker has looked good, and if we had a real NFL offense and a good QB, he would look much better. He was the only FA they invested serious money into. Everyone else came on small contracts and were stopgaps. And as people keep telling you, it's too early to evaluate the draft 3 months in, even though already Amaro has looked really good, and Pryor has looked good when playing his natural position. Oh, and IK has looked pretty damn good in the limited time he has played on defense. Because speed is only one factor in how good a receiver/tight end is? Cumberland isn't very good all around, Amaro is, and if you watched the games, you would know that. He is on a better rookie TE pace than many Hall-of-Fame TEs and certainly the best rookie TE this year. What difference does it make when in the year Idzik got Harvin? You keep thinking about it like it's Madden NFL, that you can just get any player you want whenever you want. It doesn't work that way. You don't know where all these FA WRs wanted to go and under what terms. The bottom line is, Idzik got us the #1 rated WR in free agency and a few months later, WHEN it became available, he got us another really good WR. If you can't see the difference between Idzik's plan and say Tanenbaum's plan, then I can't really help you. And your hindsight evalutation of WRs in the draft is pretty amusing. Why don't you bring up the other WRs picked later on that were available to us and have done nothing? Doesn't fit your cherry-picking model?
