The merger did not happen because of Super Bowl 3. The merger was announced on June 8, 1966. Super Bowl 3 was played in January 1969. The AFL and NFL did not officially merge till 1970, but that had nothing to do with Super Bowl 3. The combined draft began in 1967.

Namath was not overrated, he was never rated that high to begin with. He was however instrumental in defining today's NFL and that has nothing to do with how he threw a football. But let the haters hate on.
From a pure football standpoint he is overrated. However, anyone who downplays his impact on the sport is an idiot. The guy was a larger than life figure, who became one of the biggest stars in the country (not limited to athletes). Athletes who make millions in endorsements can all thank Joe.
Let's be honest, most "experts" feel Joe was very overrated b/c he was. We've been through this a million times, had he never been hurt things could have been different but his career was pretty mdicore overall. I like this guys list for the most part. I would remove: Romo- he's not worthy to be on a list w/ these other players. All of these other players showed greatness in their careers but romo was nothing more than a solid starter. Bosworth- see Romo. Montana- As a kid before I really understood this game I thought Montana was overrated but as I got older I began to aprpeciate his greatness. People don't realize he won not one but TWO Super Bowls w/o Jerry Rice. Check the weapons he had to throw to in those first 2 SBs and Steve Young forced his way out of TB and thought he'd be walking into championships w/ all that talent but he only won one title and had the JJ's in Dallas not broken up he'd likely have no SBs.
This is a good description. He's in the Hall b/c of all he meant to the game but on the field his career was mediocre.

Good point on the JJ breakup. I think the Cowboys lost at least one superbowl with that breakup. Wouldn't be surprised if it was more. Steve Young would've retired with no rings if it was Jimmy Johnson & not Barry Switzer on the Dallas sidelines.

I'm surprised to see Bosworth mentioned. Almost had to google his name to remember. Is it possible to be over rated when nobody even remembers him? His claim to fame is being getting run over by Bo Jackson & being added to highlight reels afterwards because it was so bad. so unless you win a SB you cannot be great? Joe had a mediocre career w/ some great moments, his prime years were robbed by injuries but durability counts.
Bosworth never lived up to his iconic name "The Boz", but he wasn't that bad of a player before the injuries piled up. Everyone remembers Bo Jackson owning him on MNF, but honestly Bo Jackson was a physical marvel. Had Bo dedicated himself to football and stayed healthy he would have gone down as the greatest RB to ever play.
