For context, if I were to include the 2015 QB class in these rankings, I'd go: 1) Jameis Winston 2) Marcus Mariota 3) Jared Goff 4) Carson Wentz 5) Bryce Petty 6) Paxton Lynch 7) Garrett Grayson 8) Brett Hundley 9) Christian Hackenburg 10) Connor Cook Both classes feature 2 QBs who are head and shoulders above the rest, then a sizable drop off. The 2 from 2015 were better than the 2 this year, who most definitely won't be going 1-2 overall.
I'd rearrange that list as follows: 1) Marcus Mariota 2) Jameis Winston 3) Carson Wentz 4) Bryce Petty 5) Jared Goff 6) Garrett Grayson 7) Connor Cook 8) Brett Hundley 9) Paxton Lynch 10) Christian Hackenburg IMO Winston could only be #1 in hindsight. With his character issues, slow starts/holes he dug for FSU with dumb interceptions, there's no way he could or should be rated over Mariota. I think that both Wentz and Petty are better prospects than Goff. I don't think Goff has an NFL arm, he's too skinny, and somewhat clumsy. Based on what I've read about Connor Cook, he's a dick, not a leader and has basic fundamentals issues, but there's no way I could Lynch who chokes in big games and Hackenburg who has looked absolutely awful the last 2 years and may be ruined above him. Hundley has a lot to learn, but imo is a lot more talented than Cook and has a much higher ceiling. He's in the perfect place to learn. Since we're not using hindsight, however, I couldn't put him over Cook based on his collegiate play.
1. Jared Goff 2. Jamies Winston 3. Marcus Mariota 4.Paxton Lynch 5. Carson Wentz 6. Connor Cook 7. Garrett Grayson 8. Jake Coker 9. Bryce Petty 10. Trevor Siemien
Drafting a FCS QB we top 20 in the first round wouldn't be unprecedented for the Jets. We drafted Penny 18th overall 15 or so years ago and that turned out to be a good pick for the most part.
It's NOT a win now team. I wish that nonsense would stop. Mac was VERY clear that he was going to build the team through the draft. He added some veteran players last year because he had to spend a lot of money in FA due to NFL rules, and why overpay for bad, young players? He didn't add them to "win now," just to make the team better and more competitive. The fact that we already had some older players on the team is coincidental. Of course the Jets are going to try to do the best they can each year and win as many games as they can, but that doesn't mean that they're "win now."
Yep. Finding that franchise QB is THE most important aspect of Mac's job. If he succeeds, it guarantees his longevity with the team, and if he fails, it will hasten his departure, no matter how good of a job he does otherwise. Even though I like Petty's chances, in a way I really hope Mac does take Wentz at #20. For one thing, it will show that he's doing everything he can to find the Jets a quality starting QB for the future, and for another, maybe it will put to rest all the inane comments about this being a "win now" team.
Pennington went to Marshall which is not an FCS program. FCS success stories recently include Flacco and Garapollo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Oh thanks, someone had mentioned Randy Moss as being a FCS product so I put 2 and 2 together but I guess not.
The Jets really need help on the offensive line. You don't want to put a young QB on the field with a line that has 3 question marks and right now Mangold and Carpenter are the only people the Jets can count on and Mangold is starting to show some wear and tear.
Statistically speaking the Jets o-line is very good. Even though I know that the Jets o-line statistics are misleading, at worst I would still rank them as above average. Compared to a good portion of the league, a young QB would be lucky to take snaps behind our o-line.
It is without question his most important job. The biggest problem has been that we have over reached on mediocre QB's in the recent past in which we have had to spend time determining whether or not they are our future QB. I want to see us draft another QB this year so we have two young QB's. We will be able to determine if the two are franchise QB material in roughly the same amount of time, and having two improves our odds of landing one... As long as we draft QB's with potential and not waste picks like we did when we drafted Taj Boyd (as an example)
True. We are in total agreement on that, but if the Jets did take Wentz, I doubt that he or Petty would see the field next year. While I think that Petty may be more ready to compete for the starting job than many posters do, I think Bowles is at least for the moment prejudiced towards Fitz because of his leadership and the way he played this season, and perhaps rightfully so. So, I think unless Petty or Wentz (should the Jets indeed draft him) blew Fitz out of the water in a head-to-head competition in TC, Fitz would be the starter. That said, I wouldn't want Fitz to have to start and play behind this OL again next season. Fixing the OL should definitely be the number 1a priority. The number 1 priority is always finding a franchise QB/QB of the future. Everything else is secondary. OL are easier to find than quality starting QBs. If the Jets were to draft Wentz at #20, they could still address the OL in a pretty significant fashion. I doubt that they're going to be able to re-sign Mo. They just don't have the cap space and have too many FAs who are starters and key backups. They could cut Cumberland, Kerley, Cro, Quigley, Ronald Martin, and if they think Deon Simon is capable of playing at a level close to Snacks, they could let Snacks walk. They'd then have the money to sign at least one FA OT or OG. Hopefully, after a year of development on the PS, Jarvis Harrison will be ready to compete for the starting RG job or at least be a quality backup. The Jets could use their 2nd and 3rd round picks on OL, or even trade a future draft pick for an OL on another team. The Jets probably won't take Wentz, so it's probably a moot discussion at least in terms of taking a QB over an OT. I have no idea how Mac is even going to be able to begin to fix the holes the Jets will have on their roster once FA hits. Tanny and Idzik screwed this team big time. It's absurd having 23 FAs (almost half the roster) all at once. This may be one of the few mistakes Mac made. While we praised him for the FA contracts he signed last year where if the players didn't perform he could simply let them walk with no resulting cap hit this season, but it added to a situation where we have a ton of FAs, and little cap space to work with. This is a year where we needed 12 draft picks. A very strong case can be made that the #1 pick should be on an OT, but we know that Mac takes the BPA and doesn't reach for players out of need. Based on what we're hearing, it's not a great year for OTs, and the top OTs in the draft will be gone by the #20 pick. We also know that we can't afford to trade up to get one. Thus, the BPA at #20 could very easily be an ILB, OLB, RB or some other position. I hope it's not a RB. I don't believe in using even lower first round picks on OGs, and I don't think Mac does either. In terms of the OL, I think the best we can realistically hope for is that either a good RT prospect is there at #20, and at least we'd have a shot of upgrading the RT position, or there is a very good LT or OG prospect there at our pick in the 2nd round. I've been wanting to replace Brick, but I think realistically we're going to have to wait until next year. He's not that bad. I just hope that he will be willing to take a pay cut and finish his career with the Jets, because he can't be paid $14 million this season, and we need as much cap relief as we can get, and he's about the only place we can get it.
I agree. Hopefully, Mac has a better eye for talent, and is true to his word about not "reaching" for players out of need. Of course desperation leads to desperate acts. I'm really hoping that Petty has shown enough that Mac won't ever feel a "desperate" need to reach for a QB.
That's false. Chad (while Moss redshirted) led Marshall to FCS champ loss in 95 and Moss (while strangely enough Chad redshirted) won a FCS title in 1996. Moss played his only FBS season in 97 but Chad finished his last 3 years dominating the MAC.
