The question is: how much different of a situation? Do you think any player at any position is worth any significant value above the next highest paid player at the position? When the value of the second highest player is already at the peak of the salary range for the position? This is a zero-sum argument. The cap makes it that way. No team gets to have a cap higher than the rest of the teams just because they're better than the rest of the teams and their players deserve more money. The cap says that the Jets, like the rest of the NFL, have approximately $121M as a baseline to play with this year. So is any player worth more than 10% of that cap under any circumstances? If so, how does that player's contribution justify paying him more than 10% of the cap? What does a player have to actually produce compared to his peers to make him worth more than 10% of the cap? And BTW, you forgot that I also compared Revis to a CB in the post. In fact I started with that notion.
It's not fair value at all, but it's better than having him walk without any compensation. That's how I look at it. You can never get the right value back for a potential HOF player.
Only QB IMO, but that should be reserved for Elite players. However, I think it is how you budget the position. Do you reserve 20% + for the secondary? I don't think so.
I'm not even sure QB justifies paying more than 10% of the salary cap. 2001 - Patriots, Tom Brady, less than 10%. 2002 - Bucs, Brad Johnson, less than 10%. 2003 - Patriots, Tom Brady, less than 10%. 2004 - Patriots, Tom Brady, 10.4% (8.374M/80.582M cap) 2005 - Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger, less than 10% 2006 - Colts, Peyton Manning, more than 10% 2007 - Giants, Eli Manning, less than 10%. 2008 - Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger, less than 10%. 2009 - Saints, Drew Brees, more than 10%. 2010 - Packers, Aaron Rodgers, less than 10%. 2011 - Giants, Eli Manning, more than 10%. 2012 - Ravens, Joe Flacco, less than 10%. The pattern is pretty clear. Teams win Super Bowls and then their QB's break the bank and sit all over the cap. Joe Flacco had an $8M cap number this year when the Ravens won the Super Bowl but in order to keep him the Ravens will have to at least double that, impeding their ability to retain and acquire other players. Note that 6 out of the last 12 Super Bowl winning QB's were playing on their first deal, before their cost had exploded into the stratosphere. It may sound crazy but I think it's possible that teams should be drafting a new QB every 3 or 4 years with the full intent of letting their current QB go at the end of his rookie deal unless he is an All-Pro by then. The third deal is a real killer for the cap and the extension on the second, which is often like a new deal is pretty bad also.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...ine-article-1.1273500?localLinksEnabled=false Another garbage article by Manish about Revis. He forgets that we have more important things to do in the Combine like, I don't know, scout for talent....
Mehta has taken on the bad boy role in the NY media to differentiate himself from the crowd. He's basically doing a lot of muck-raking around the Jets. It's unclear if that will pay off in the long-run though. If the Jets under-achieve for a few seasons and are a bad franchise then Mehta is golden, since he'll be leading the disgruntled fan charge. If on the other hand they turn it around and look solid moving forward then he's in a different spot and its not clear where that lands him.
On the bolded part, that could just be gamesmanship, too. Seriously, at this point there's nothing to talk about. But I do agree with you - if the Jets trade Revis, certainly before it is clear to everyone that he will return to form, but even if that happens, they will not get fair value for him, and we will lament the move.
Well, if it is true that Woody is driving this decision, we can expect the equivalent of a multi car pileup. Someone should take the keys away from our cakehole owner.
Welcome to the club. Isn't this exactly what some of us have been saying 10 pages ago? But, Manish's bunk story means nothing - It wasn't as if they were supposed to meet or come up with some grand solution THIS WEEK!!!!! Only Manish set those parameters... Just like Hubbuch was all excited the when the Jets didn't make cuts as fast as the Giants did - Manufactured Bogus NY Media Crap.
I am talking about Woody Johnson making football decisions. It has nothing to do with Mehta. Has ANYONE reporting on this team said Woody is going to leave the business to the football knowledgeable people he has hired to do that work? No. 30 days, next case.
I know many sunshiners complain about the writers of negative stories. As if there is nothing bad to say about the current state of the Jets. Well it is starting to sound more and more to me that Woody is set on a course of spending less money on this team. Perhaps he is losing money on it. He presumably has a lot of trust fund money available, but we don't know what his bottom line is right now. What will be REALLY telling is if despite the current supposed cap issues, the Jets end up going into the 13 season significantly below the cap. I am not making a prediction at this point, but if they do, that will not surprise me at all. Feel free to have a different opinion, since I acknowledge that is what I have. But I think that I have a bit more than that, since the moves the Jets are making, and not making, are consonant with a new approach, and that is to NOT spend "too much" money on it. It's not just Revis. We can see where this goes with other roster issues. But if there is merit to there being this supposed new approach, I will put aside my own take on the Revis situation, since that take is based on someone making the call there who is objective and NOT concerned about lowering costs even below the cap for this year, but lowering costs, period, who is not a football person, and who has passed in the past on stupid roster moves like the Kendall move for emotional and not business reasons. In short, the history of past dealings and the available indications we have to work with do not inspire confidence in the near to mid term.
I think it's more-so that Woody is done with the bullshit when it comes to Revis and his $$$ demands. The era of me first players, I think with the Jets is going away. Surely, Woody and Idzik had a discussion about this previously during the interview process and Idzik hit it right on the money where he prob said, "We should not be paying a CB X much money". Some positions deserve higher priority then others. This is a perfect example. Revis will be gone before the trade deadline I think. Not sure if someone would give out a 1st rounder now for him due to his injury, but it's possible. Denver and San Fran might be that desperate.
Has Revis actually said that he wants $16 mil a year? Or be the highest paud defensive player in the NFL? Fill me in, cus I haven't seen anything of him saying that, just what people think that he's looking for.
Plenty of bad things to say, but for a 'beat writer', the guy sure has a lot of venom to spit out about the Jets. Personally, I think it is a good idea to not overpay players so much. For example, if Saint Chez was not guaranteed, we would not be talking about him on the team. If we didn't have a fair amount of cap tied into underperforming players, we would be talking about the tandem of Revis/Cro/and Landry. As it stands, Woody is doing the right thing in my opinion by focusing on a way to keep us under the cap so we can make better moves in the future.
At a time when we have one of the all time great qbe making a deal that is team and cap friendly , we however are dealing with the 3rd negotiation in 5 years with a player that clearly favours I above the team. Whilst Revis is undoubtedly a great player his reported demands in 2010 and now to be the highest paid player on defence are something the jets should not cave into. Prove his fitness and then trade him in June when we will get more value. If Revis did want to remain a jet his mandate would be met in my opinion as a 6 yr deal averaging 10m per yr would be met. hiwever i believe he will want upwards of 14m per year plus over 35m in guarantees and bonus . it's clear with Manish's piece if trash in the NYDN that the positioning is starting already from a player/ agent combination that have a proven track record.
on what basis do you think better moves in the future are going to come from Woody Johnson???? Unless he sells the team, of course. More generally I am not going to argue with posters here who want to make themselves feel better about the concept of Revis leaving by telling themselves he does not play an important position, and the Jets can trade him and get equal value. BS on both scores. He totally takes away the opponent's number 1 offensive weapon (say 14 weeks out of 16 - with the now rare exception of a Foster type RB opponent), and always their top receiver. During the game he unlike any other cb I can think of can play ANY type of receiver, too, adding flex to the D. He does it singlehandedly, allowing the Jets to not double cover the opponent's top receiver. The opponent also needs to rotate pass plays away from him because of his ability to break off coverage to the ball. He's also probably the best or near best tackler at his position. And anyone who just assumes the Jets will get equal value for him in picks and then uses them for quality players is a fool. Add that it is much more likely he will go down to $13 mil than $16, and that is a very doable number. The Jets will be cutting plenty of overpriced and underperforming vets this year and next, and will have plenty of cap space next year. But... if Woody is going to make this decision for emotional and uninformed reasons, he will fuck it up.
eye-opening post. I'm beginning to think something similar. Flacco is going to get 20M per season. Let's see how long Baltimore can keep it together. Until Flacco hit the huge payday, they've been able to consistently upkeep talent all around their roster. ======= When Brady took reduced pay for the last 3 years, I came to the realization that he's gonna retire with at least 1 more SB ring. BB is gonna have great opportunities to keep providing talent around him & building that D. These franchise QB are the most important player on the team but there still needs to be a limit to how far a team should go when paying them.
