Thanks! I'd rather have Thibodeaux at #4, but would be absolutely gobsmacked if he drops. I don't like Karlaftis. I haven't watched any video of Ojabo yet, so might would take him instead of Ebiketie at #10 or after trading a little from #4, but for now, I really like Ebiketie's potential, and think he could start day one.
By all accounts, FF will be getting paid this off-season and the Jets aren’t looking to spend snacks money on a DL…. You may be stuck with Rankins.
Thanks! I'd rather have Thibodeaux, but don't think he'll drop to us. I'm certain that if JD makes a trade prior to the draft, it will be conditional on whether Thibodeaux is there at #4. That said, I'm not certain how much better Thibodeaux will be than Ebiketie, particularly when you add in the players I was able to take with the two extra 2nd round picks and the 3rd round pick (Zion Johnson, Lewis Cine, and Jeremy Ruckert). Thibodeaux would have to be a LOT better to equal the production of those 4 players I got instead. I also saw something the other day that called Thibodeaux's character into question, so that could be a red flag that would scare JD off. I don't remember what it was. I'll have to see if I can find it. Yeah, even with a trade down or two, we're still going to need another 1-2 offseasons. We have 9 picks as it is. With the trade down I made, we'd have 12 picks. Out of those 12, 5-6 would be starters, and some of the others could see action as well. I'm not certain that we want to have one of the youngest teams in the NFL two years in a row and have the most rookies and young players starting of any team in the NFL. It would be exciting, but not very conducive to making the playoffs.
That's an interesting point of view. I suspect you don't mean that Echols needs to be our number 2 corner but rather that we need a number 1 shutdown corner, with Hall moving to number 2 and Echols to backup?
To me, both Ebiketie and Ojabo are incredible athletes with freakish speed and quickness that can bear comparison to Thibodeaux. However, reports are that neither at this point is particularly good at holding his ground at the point of attack. If I'm the Jets, I have no trouble with drafting one because either can be a designated pass rusher behind JFM and Carl Lawson, with JFM moving inside on passing downs.
Correct! (Although “need” is a bit strong more like an impressive upgrade in depth and quality) DL and LB are more important positions on this D but if we can get quality in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, why not get a premium DB or 2? Everyone (myself included) wants a WR #1 but if we manage to sign Schultz and draft McBride, can you imagine running 2 TE set with Moore and Davis? Davis proved in TEN to be a good #2 option, he’s be an amazing #4
Your implied plan seems like a viable option to me. That is, if we draft an EDGE and a big WR in the first round, why shouldn't we consider taking a CB with CB #1 potential at 35? Players who fit this description for our zone system might include McCreary, Elam, McDuffie, and Gordon. Either McBride or Wydermyer should be available at 38 so we get our TE to go with our big WR. Then we hope we get lucky with a guard like Salyer, Ingram, or Lecitus Smith at 69. Finally, we can take two linebackers (like Domann and Asamoah) in the fourth round and then a RB with some power and a run stuffing in DT round 5. Certainly, there are other plans that could work also, but I wouldn't throw this one out if the players fall in the draft in a certain way.
I definitely prefer your way if JD and the scouts are that impressed with the EDGE they take at 4. The more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I think JD signs a big name TE. MLF appreciates the importance of a TE and would get creative with 2 TE sets (which would help the run game as well). Following that train of thought to the next stop is making me back off the idea of a WR in the 1st.
Actually, the sacrilegious possibility has also occurred to me of relying in the red zone on two big, athletic tight ends, Davis and Moore (vs. big drafted WR, TE, Davis, and Moore). Maybe I just have a sinful, questioning mind, but Kansas City seems to do just fine without a big, dominating WR.
JD would need to work his cap magic to wind up with cap space to sign camp cuts and for in season emergencies around $12 million. Trades – Denver and Washington both want pick #4 to take Kenny Pickett. The Jets trade pick #4 to the Denver Broncos in exchange for picks #9, #40, #63, and #95 NC....I really like a lot of the work you did here, if we get an offer from #4 to 9, I would expect JD to try for a #1 or #2 in 2023 in the package, but if Hutch or Tibs fall, I would take them....
I like Allgeier a lot. He reminds me a lot of a lighter AJ Dillon. I suspect I’m not the only one who recognizes that and he’ll go a bit higher than that. He punishes tacklers and should be a great closer.
Great job NC! I'm not so sure I like taking Dean with the #9 pick, but as I still haven;t spent any time analyzing the pool of draftees IDK what I'd suggest differently. Aside from that though I'd be very happy with an offseason like you propose.
So I think folks should read what @Sundayjack wrote about Nakobe Dean because it’s very telling. I get the same vibes as to what Kuechly did for the culture of the Panthers defense. Not to say he’ll be quite the player he was because Kuechly’s ability to diagnose a play and take his first three steps towards exactly where the ball was going is probably one of the best in NFL history. But the intelligence and leadership qualities can’t be measured. Keep in mind that he was the leader and arguably the best player on one of the best defenses of all time. ESPN sucks but they did a really good segment on him this season and the take away was “what Nakobe calls, we run.” I’ll try to find the clip. Edit: clip is below.
Ok, you convinced me. One thing any team - and especially the Jets - can't have enough of is high motor, intelligent players. If he's available at that spot, I'd be happy for JD to take him. Thanks for the info.
I think all of us Jets fans have fallen in love with the “premium” position thing. I have a friend that’s a big fan of it and extremely against Hamilton at 4. I think part of that comes from the fact that we took so many fucking defensive tackles that were not game changing players over the past decade. The reason it becomes a big risk in taking those types of positions high in the draft is because if they don’t become great players that means they likely don’t make impact plays (forcing turnovers, big sacks, tackles for loss, etc.). You can stomach wasting a high value pick on a offensive tackle that ends up good, not great. You can’t stomach that if you waste that pick on a safety that becomes like a Justin Reid level player. Eric Fisher at #1 overall for the Chiefs is a good example of a tackle that probably wasn’t worth the top billing but was a solid tackle that started a ton of games for them.
The bold is exactly right. That's why I think you only take a non-premium position in the top 15 if you're already a playoff team and only need a piece or two, or an upgrade over what you already have - which is obviously not a terrible player given you made the playoffs with him. The Jets have too many premium holes: Edge, RG, C, WR, TE, and frankly we don't even know if we have the LT filled for sure. Taking a Safety that high - even someone rated as good as Hamilton - is a gamble they can't afford. Dean is almost the same thing, and maybe I'm wrong, because a LB plays closer to the LOS and is in the middle of everything I give the nod to him over Hamilton if I have to take one inside 15.
Thanks, I'd rather have the 2nd and 3rd round picks this year than a 1st next year. The 1st next year is like a 2nd round pick this year, and doesn't help us for a year, and that player could take a year or two to develop. We have holes now that need filling and depth that needs upgrading. You never know what could happen with that pick next year. Denver could wind up winning the SB and then that pick would be like a 2nd round pick anyway.
Yep. You may be right he could go earlier. I like Tyler Badie a lot as well, but Allgeier had fewer carries in college so should be fresher longer, plus is bigger, would give us a bigger RB who can hopefully block, and he and Zach played together at BYU so have that familiarity already.
Thanks! Yeah, #9 may be a little early for Dean. Also, since the Jets will be coaching Devin Lloyd in the Sr. Bowl, they might opt to take him over Dean anyway.
