Why would people be happy about losing any coach from the number 1 defense in the league? Or aren't the linebackers part of that?
guys like Rex Ryan, Pettine, Doug Plank are responsible for the resurgence of this defense......Sutton just collects a paycheck....
but when it was the DC of the 16th defense in the league its fine? He obviously offers nothing truly impactful.
If Trgovac was the DC for Green Bay, they would not be running a 3-4. When Trgovac was the DC for Carolina, he ran a 4-3. Capers is the one with the 3-4 experience. I think NFL.com has it flipped.
That's not really irony, just a bad decision. And one that robs me of the schadenfreude of seeing a very talented Giants defense wallow with such a horrible coordinator.
I partially agree with you here. Sutton seems to be a pretty good LB coach--since 2000 when he first took the job we've seen Jonathan Vilma, Bryan Thomas and David Harris all take major strides under his coaching. It's not like he's a problem that the Jets need to get rid of. That said, we saw over the past few years that he's clearly not a good coordinator. When the entire defense was under his direction he was inflexible, predictable, and overall ineffective. The Giants would be making a huge mistake by turning their defense over to him.
I think Sutton is probably a pretty talented position coach. I call him a barnacle, but he has coached in a number of philosophies with some mixed results. But there is no evidence that he will ever be a good DC, successfully implementing his own system and choosing his own assistants, even after a 3 year stint at DC already.
i'm sure he's a good position coach...maybe even a great one. I'm just a little sour over the 2-8 alignment he ran last year......I still can't get that Niners/Jets game out of my mind last year, where Shaun Hill looked like Joe Montana against our D......i'm forever haunted by that debacle.
I agree with most of this. Several LBs have made great strides in the defense, and, typically, you don't get to be the head coach of any D-1A/FBS team without any football knowledge. As for him being a DC, I doubt he turns out to be much better for the Giants than he was for the Jets. Although, he likely would stick with a 4-3 and he would have a much more talented line-up in the front 7 than he did during his three year stint as the Jets' DC. At best, it's up in the air.
It sounds to me like he is spinning his desire for BS to be gone. Do you think he is really going to say, this guy sucks as an OC and I can't wait to promote Cavanugh? He is singing his praises so he can get rid of him.
